Philips LED Bulb Screw/Bayonet 7.5W - 600lum - $5 @ Countdown (Originally $11.99)

80

Saw this at Countdown.
Online only shows the screw version but they have bayonets in store also.
If there are no discount tags, they'll scan up to be $5 anyway.

  • Anyone ordered the various cheap LED bulbs from the Asian tech sites (Banggood etc)? Changing colours, sound activated, mini-disco effects, straight up LED lights. Lots of different types and cheap. Usually screw mount but sometimes bayonet. (not sure if fittings are compatible with ours or not) Have also seen adaptors to fit screw to bayonet and visa versa. Curious on people's experience. (though perhaps I should put this in a forum rather than a related deal)

If you're looking for a normal warm white LED light bulb, just get a branded one like Philips, GE or Panasonic. The generic LED lights are rarely as bright as they claim, and the extreme lack of quality control is such that some are unreliable to the point of possibly becoming a fire risk. I got the Panasonic 8W bulbs during the Dick Smith sale a while ago and I was honestly surprised at how much light they put out, comparable to some of my older 10+ watt LEDs.

I also have 2 'colour-changing' bulbs w/remote as well as a $45 7W Smart bluetooth bulb. The colour-changing bulbs are gimmicky at best and I rarely use them, but the smart bluetooth bulb has proven to be quite useful as security lighting - I set it to turn itself on at sunset and off at sunrise, using an internal clock. I adjust the settings every month to correspond to local sunrise/sunset times. The reason I used this setup is because that particular light fitting prevents the use of a light sensor, and fitting a smart switch like the Belkin Wemo is both too expensive and too much hassle. I only have the bluetooth bulb for 2 months so I cannot comment on reliability.

      • Very informative. Thank you Avantime !

yes they are cheap, but some do not have NZ certification, which makes them illegal, and can void things like warranty or insurance claims should something bad happens

I use cheap adapters with my Genuine Philips LEDs, most notably e14 to e27 adapter and have had no issues. Cheap LED bulbs are just that, cheap. You will find one day you go to remove one and the bulb separates from the mount. Not particularly problematic but just keep in mind that you can't expect them to last as long as a name brand.

  • For anyone wondering, this is 40w equiv.

    • Thanks eXDee, was trying to read the website image but too small and no additional product information on their site. As I was looking at the Countdown site, couldn't help but compare it with the overseas online 'shops' which frequently grace these pages.

Whatever the quality issues may be with products, have to say that these Asian electronic sites etc do a excellent job of selling their products and streamlining the ordering system. Lots of very detailed HD photographs and product information sheets, reviews, related products, viewing history, wishlists etc. etc.

Many of our NZ companies have a long long way to travel to catch up with them, especially in customer service ordering systems, and delivery. I've mentioned before ordering $2.50 worth of fishhooks from The Warehouse. Three weeks later, three different packages, and three botched deliveries wasting considerable amount of time. No wonder NZ govt wants to bring in GST, import duties etc on overseas online orders $20 or less. NZ has difficulty in competing on the basis of service and ease of purchase.

  • Been to few stores, Botany, Highland Part no one has stock. Anyone managed to get one of these?

    • I picked up quite a few in Papakura.
And also a lot left in my local Countdown in Hamilton.
