What did you buy this week?

I always find it interesting seeing what people spend their money on.

This is a place to yarn about things you recently purchased that you're excited about using, or to show how much of a shopaholic you are. Where people might find a deal that hasn't already been posted on Cheapies, and a place to ask for advice on items that have been mentioned.

    • Sony WF-1000XM5 earbud
    • sleeping earbuds
    • travel pillow
    • a bunch of clothes, socks, jeans, jackets
    • random things from Temu
    • 8 watches?!?!?!

      • Yeah, I'm a bit of a watch collector. And shoes. And various other junk that eat money haha

    • Oh, you ended up buying the earbuds. From sony store or online?

      • From PBTech lol. It was $320, only a few dollars more.

Slightly more comfy than my WF-1000XM4, but not by much compared to my Technics AZ80.

        • Ah, i was thinking of getting it. Would be replacing my WF-1000XM3 so perhaps a bit more upgrade

          • @spam: Go for it man. I hated my WF-1000XM3, extremely uncomfortable even with Comply and SpinFit ear tips. Upgraded to the XM4 and it's much better. Wouldn't say it's uncomfortable, but definitely useable. Then went with the Technics and it's so much better overall. Better sound, better comfort, etc. Then tried the XM5 and it's more comfy than the XM4, but compared to the Technics, not by much. I got it only coz it was on sale and I thought I could just dedicate my XM4 to when I'm out for a run (I sweat easily).

The XM5 has adaptive noise cancelling though, it changes dynamically based on the noise in your surrounding environment. You can't set it to always be at max noise cancelling in the app. This is the same problem with the WH-1000XM5 (which is why I sold it). But so far, I think my WF-1000XM5 has been doing fine in terms of noise cancelling, although I haven't tested it extensively in noisy environments yet……..but in terms of comfort, definitely worth the upgrade over the XM3.

            • @NovaAlpha: Good to know. I've been using the small tip that was provided and I found that the cheap redmi buds are more comfy than these sony.

I'd probably wait until it goes on sale again (or if I feel like it, go to the store) before upgrading.

              • @spam: LOL I have that too (for running use at home or outside) and yeah it is more comfy than the XM4 because it's smaller and fits my ear better. But it doesn't offer noise cancelling, hence why I'm using my WF-1000XM4 for that purpose now.

                • @NovaAlpha: bought it last week price matched to PB tech + Amex offer so got it for $280.

I can see why you said it's way better than XM3. It feels like it seals better too, with the ANC is way quieter than XM3. Not sure if I need time to adjust but it felt weird lol.

    • Hey, can I get the time ?

      • Hey, can I get the time ?

Time … to buy a watch from NovaAlpha.

Just don't be surprised if are wearing a large mac, and have the watches hanging from the inside!

  • I just got a pair of Timberland Men's 6-Inch Premium Waterproof Boots THESE for $109 + $18 shipping from Amazon Resale, described as "like new". Same model of Timberland in NZ are all well over $200, last deal posted for these on here was $250 down from $360 back in 2022. I think it was an unusually good deal from Amazon Resale who used to be good but have sucked ever since the rebrand a couple of years ago.

I did click and collect for all of em but yet to hear anything (though I think a few of em need to be transferred to the store first).

Think shipping was still just $10 (lol) but thought they might cancel the order if I chose that option.

      • 1 of 2 weights orders cancelled just now… (the second order which is interesting).

    • Bought 2 x Quilton Facial Tissue + 1 x 600m Glad Wrap, 56.02 shipped. Thanks!

    • Oh no, received an email saying the subscriptions won't accept my address. How did you get the subscribe and save work?

    • Says "subscription error" on the Subscriptions page, but no error on the Order page. Do you see the same thing for your Amazon order?

      • Change your address to Australia to get subscribe and save, then cancel subscribe and save once your order has been placed.

        • But the order has already been placed. I got no issue before placing the order using my nz address. But received two emails afterwards. One was the confirmation email and the other was about the subscription issue.

          https://ibb.co/TDKhZ2kH
          https://ibb.co/S73NZffr
          https://ibb.co/S4TTNpJk

          • @xsolider: Just cancel the subscriptions. It’s because they’re being sent to a NZ address.

            • @Wakrak: I see, isn't it a loophole? They can't fulfil the subscriptions to nz but still offer 10% off.

    2 x Poco X7 Phone 8GB/256GB $440, Shopback TEMU 50% Cashback
    1 x Poco Pad 8GB/256GB $517, Shopback TEMU 50% Cashback
    1 x Galaxy S25 Ultra 512GB + Galaxy Buds3 Pro $1640, Samsung
1 x Kogan Mobile Large Plan $198, Dicksmith

    • How much did the 50% cashback track & how much you paid? Just trying to understand, if it was less than 50%

      • +3

Yes I also question how they calculated to cashback amount.
It did mention Cashback excludes Tax and Shipping.
Shipping was free so its just GST (15%)

        What I thought:
        Phone $440 - 15% = $374, Cashback = $187
        Pad $517 - 15% = $439.45, Cashback = $219.73

        Actual:
Phone - Paid $440 each, Shopback tracked $362.88,Cashback tracked $181.44
Pad - Paid $517, Shopback tracked $423.10, Cashback tracked $211.55.
        Total difference of $19.30.

Not enough of a difference to worry about it, but would be good to know :)

        • Not enough of a difference to worry about it, but would be good to know :)

I'd like to know as well, but I do wonder if Temu declares a shipping cost to customs (which is 'true'), and that reduces the net cost of goods, and perhaps GST they have to remit.

If ShopBack base the amounts on the declared value (rather than what is shown on Temu's website) that might explain it?

Trade Me has been great for me of late. Especially $1 listings that close before 3pm.

Picked up a women's Mizuno bike in great condition for $2.
Bought myself a rusty old working bike for $3.
Picking up a 2m long TV unit today that I bought for $1

    • Nice ones.

    • Good thrifty buying.
Not going to hang the tv on the wall?

      • +1

Sold em all, so no wall hanging going on here 😄

        • +1

Just sold that tv unit for $80. Happy days.

          • @Wakrak: Did you sell it back on TM ? Did you have to do any work on it ?

            • @RJA7: I sell everything on Facebook and nah don't usually do any fixes to the items I buy.

              • @Wakrak: Nice side Hussle -always wanted to do it , never actually got into it.

    • Nice scores

  • I just bought a brand new Nothing Phone 3a for $405 from a pawn shop. Hope it's not one that's been stolen then sold to them.

    • Hope it's not one that's been stolen then sold to them.

No way to be absolutely certain I guess (even possible a victim, especially if stolen from a retailer or warehouse, might not even know they have lost it), but most phones, once reported stolen, are barred from all the networks, so if it works, then you're probably okay….

      • Yeah first thing I'll be doing is checking the imei once it's delivered to me.

Think I'll start posting in here with more of a review lens on. What did I buy and what are my thoughts on it.

Expensive, but very nice looking and super comfortable. Not something I would buy often but these should last me a long time.

Japanese style lamp with adjustable brightness from TEMU
    $70 + $30 cashback via ShopBack = $40

Overall happy with it but would be nice if you could change the colour temperature like others I've purchased from AliExpress. Looks great in the office though.

Mountain Warehouse Circle Mountain Crew Neck Sweatshirt $29.99

Happy with this one. Super comfortable, fits well, looks great (I think this is the one I purchased)

What I'm going to purchase next …

Big Bed Bumper (alternative bed rail) $44.95 from The Sleep Store
    https://www.thesleepstore.co.nz/brand/the-sleep-store/big-be…

Expensive for what it is (a big piece of Polyurethane foam) but does an excellent job. Way better looking than traditional rails; easy to install, easy to remove; son doesn't roll out of bed but also easy for him to climb in and out of bed; doesn't take up much bed space.

    I would buy it again.

Thanks to Grosave I recently managed to purchase 10x 2.5kg bags of Lamb Weston crisscut/waffle fries for $2.69 per bag + $5 collection fee. After i purchaed them they fixed the price back to $20.79 per bag.

    https://www.newworld.co.nz/shop/product/5326154-ea-000?name=…

I also tried to order the twister/curly fries but they weren't able to supply them. Which is lucky as it turns out the waffle fries are kinda bulky and took up all the spare freezer space I had and wouldve had to end up giving bags if fries away.

    • Nicely done.
      That’s a lot of fries!

      • That’s a lot of fries!

I was thinking the same - 25kg of fries sounds like about three years supply, but great find :-)

Are they lamb flavoured? Sounds a bit weird, if so, but each to their own!

        • Lamb Weston is the company name, american company.

          • @Dunno:

Lamb Weston is the company name
