ChoiceCheapies Beta Discussion

ChoiceCheapies is the new bargain hunting and sharing community in New Zealand. It has soft launched and is currently in beta, i.e. lots of things might be broken. We'll use this thread to discuss issues, problems, and general comment on the site.

Comments

  • One thing about a beta-site is —- you are getting some beta features first! Just roll out "Notification" onto ChoiceCheapies. You'll see the bell-icon next to My Account at the top of the page. This will replace some messages & system-PM functionality.

If you have enabled "beta-feature" in your settings, you also get almost-real-time updates, i.e. if someone replied your comment, you'll see the notification count updated straight away.

    • I saw that this morning, will have to keep an eye on it, see if it's helpful. Thanks Scott.

      • You get a notification when someone directly replying your comment like this.

        • Sweet it works. One thing, though, is it only took me to the node page, not the comment you made, or even the page the comment was made on.

          If that makes sense.

        • @Shaw: There are actually two links in the notification generated for comment reply. "Your comment" is linked to your comment that has been replied to, and then the title of the node + link to the page to provide context.

When multiple people replied to the same comment actually only one notification is generated, but would be updated to show who was the last person replied your comment.

        • @scotty:

Didn't notice it first time, but I see it now. Very difficult to see the difference between URL and text. Could the URL be made bold?

          Nice, I like it.

        • Just tried it for the first time. I can see people clicking on the link to the deal/forum rather than the comment link. My preference is just go to the comment, no need to go to the beginning of the deal at all but don't know if that's best practice.

          Also, it says:

easternculture replied your comment in iPod Touch 16GB $229 (Save $50), iPod Nano 16GB $187 (Save $42) @ HN ($5 off with Newsletter Signup).

I think it needs a to before comment.

        • @neil:

          Much better now.

    • Please note the change in behaviour for notifications - users now have to opt-in to receive automatic notifications of new comments.

  • There seems to be stores showing in the drop down search that either have no deals/forum posts/etc in their store OR aren't applicable to NZ. E.G. KFC gives you KFC & KFC Australia.

    • Yeah the auto complete was from the database copied from OzBargain. The stores without deals should be removed. I'll look into that.

      • Yea, we even get traffic going to deal pages for stores that have had no deals posted. Not that that is necessarily a terrible thing, but I'm sure it doesn't look too good.

  • When trying to login from the front page on Windows Phone 8.1 Internet Explorer, when I click the [v] besides login it doesn't open. It works for me on OzBargain and the other [v]'s work for me

    • Should be exactly the same code for the drop down. Try to click on "Login" which will bring you to a dedicated Login page.

  • The G+ page seems to not be pulling the description and links are shown as dlvr.it. From what I can recall, there are some settings that need to be tweaked on dlvr.it to fix these up.

    • Set up to use full content now — at least the same as OzB's dlvr.it settings. Let's see whether it fixes the issue.

  • I wonder if we can adjust the default setting on the newsletter to show all deals as the daily newsletter doesn't have many.

    • In some sense the "minimum votes" on the newsletter settings page is actually not that useful.

      • On small sites such as ChoiceCheapies, it really limits how many deals can be included in the newsletter. In this case it should be default to 1, i.e. all deals will be included.

      • On large sites such as OzBargain, the minimum votes setting is also useless as newsletter will include no more than 10 deals regardless the minimum votes.

Maybe we'll just do away with that setting in the backend.

  • Not sure why but this tag for TV doesn't even load.

    • Think I fixed it (fluke).

I merged 'TV' with the tag 'Test' then removed 'Test' from the merge and deleted 'Test' tag.

      • Ha. Well, that's a roundabout way of fixing but whatever works I guess. :)

  • Trying to mod a dupe comment but it just keeps spinning.

    • Yeah me too, trying to open the menu on any comment in any thread and the same thing happens, stuck on loading.

  • What happened to tracking "not entered" comps. It was the best way to see what I have left to enter.

ChoiceCheapies has just migrated to a new domain.

    CHEAPIES.NZ

Things might be broken but I'll sort them out when I get up tomorrow morning :)

Moreover there's now a distinction between the Front Page Deals and New Deals. When a deal is posted, it sits in the New Deals page until it reaches sufficient votes (currently at +4) before it would appear on the front page.

ChoiceCheapies has just migrated to a new domain.

What's the reason for this scotty?

    • +1

I was wondering why I had to login again.

  • scotty, I did a forget password and the subject line says "Replacement login information for [id] at ChoiceCheapies" you might want to make it as "Replacement login information for [id] at Cheapies" :)

    Cheers

    • For now the "branding" hasn't changed — it's still ChoiceCheapies but we just change the domain name to be something shorter to type.

  • Hi Guys,
I was just reading the Deal Posting Guidelines, and have noticed that there are several dead links, and some that are irrelevant to NZ users. I have included them all below, I'd be happy to fix them but I don't have the privileges.

Under the Listings on Mass Retailing Sites heading:

    • All of the links to the eBay and quicksales posting guidelines are dead as these pages don't exist on Cheapies.
    • quicksales is an Australian site that doesn't seem to be used in NZ.

Under the Price Matching Deals heading:

    • Officeworks doesn't operate in NZ, a more suitable alternative would be Warehouse Stationary or OfficeMax.

Under the Affiliate & Referral Links heading:

    • References to Cashback sites which do not operate in NZ.

Under the Affiliate & Referral Links subheading of Steps to take to post a referral link for stores that are allowed:

    • Posting limit restrictions links to a page which hasn't been created.

Under the Group Buy Deals heading:

    • The group buy link is for a page that doesn't exist on Cheapies.

    Under the Staff Deals heading:

    • Woolworths doesn't operate in NZ anymore, now called Countdown.

Just a few tiny things that I noticed while looking through, not that important ahaha.
    Cheers.

Thanks for that bro, have gone through and made a number of changes.

Have left some Aus details on the Ebay page (ABN etc) as it is still semi relevant if they are posting Ebay AU deals.

The Pricematch page is a straight copy from OzBargain, haven't had a chance to edit anything into it yet, but if you have any edits you want to make, feel free.

      • Awesome, will try update that tonight :)

      • The Price Match page is now updated with all the NZ retailers I could find with a Google search. :)

        • +1

          Very nice mate, looks great.

  • Found a bug where on duplicate comment error page it says Australian bargains, deals….

    • Thank you, this should be fixed now.

  • Wrong coloured icon https://files.cheapies.nz/upload/968/641/screen_shot_2016-03… it should be blue not orange.

    • Thanks. Fixed now.

  • A couple of things:
Here there is a broken image and a broken link to choicecheapies.com.au/samplestore.com.au
Here under ChoiceCheapies tutorials the links are to OzBargain, the printable guide to merchants is for OzBargain and the link to "API & ChoiceCheapies Logos" doesn't work.

    • Fixed up the top issue, will leave the OzBargain image there for now, as it's a good example of what is mentioned above.

      • My problem with the image isn't that it is from OzBargain, it first appeared like this for me but after clicking on it came up with this. After waiting for a few seconds it showed me the correct image. I'm not sure wether this is a problem with my browser or ChoiceCheapies but the same thing happened when using a different browser.

        • But is it still doing it now?

        • @Shaw: In a browser after once clicking and viewing the hotlink detected page it appears fine in that browser. But I just tried using another browser and it didn't display the image.

        • +1

          @ClipIt:

I see what you mean now, will get it sorted. Cheers.

    • Basically the problem is that images uploaded to OzBargain cannot be hot-linked from ChoiceCheapies. I have relaxed the rules and hopefully it's now okay.

  • The image is displaying correctly now. I've found another minor mistake: Here the title should be changed to I don't want that blue question mark.

  • I've found some duplicate wiki pages
    https://www.cheapies.nz/wiki/price_comparison_sites and https://www.cheapies.nz/wiki/list_of_price_comparison_sites
    https://www.cheapies.nz/wiki/rule_sockpuppeting and https://www.cheapies.nz/wiki/help:sockpuppeting and https://www.cheapies.nz/wiki/help:sockuppeting

Also on a store page like everbuying cash back offers are displayed. I believe that these are Australian ones that don't work in NZ.

    • +1

Well spotted, I always have too many tabs too see that far across!

  • A minor bug I just found:
When looking at revisions for competitions like this one one of the options is:

    Residency: Australia-wide

  • Found another mistake. I the settings under deals it says:

    Show deals marked as NSFW

The NSFW wiki page doesn't exist.

    • +1

      Sorted.

  • Just searched OzBargain on the wiki and found these:
    Banned Items on ChoiceCheapies:

Items on this list shouldn't be posted on OzBargain.

    Sockpuppeting:

it will also result in a ban for that store from posting on OzBargain in the future.

    • Thank you, fixed.

  • Just noticed that this deal now links to a wiki page that doesn't exist.

    Reason: Targeted offer

    • Thanks, just in the process is fixing that. Should be done in 15 minutes.

    • Thanks, fixed now.

    • Admins have fixed it about 30 mins ago, server issue. Thanks.

  • Noticed that cash backs are showing on this deal don't think they should be there as at least CashRewards requires an AU Bank account.

    • Should be fixed now.

  • +1
  • The alternate store box isn't appearing at the bottom of deals.

    • +1

Yea, been doing it for a while, and on CCL too.

    • +1

      Fixed now.

  • Here are some of the site's most recent most popular deals for the Stats and Records page:

There is now 8 deals on the site with 30 or more votes. The Hubbards muesli deal has considerably less votes than other deals and probably should be removed from the list. I'm not sure how many deals you intend to have as the "most popular", but my opinion is that just top five would be sufficient.

    • +1

The stats age shows the 'historical most popular deals', so only when a deal becomes the most popular (ever) does it appear on there.

    • +1

ClipIt is correct, however this is probably a good example.

    • I understand now. So the next deal to appear on the list has to have more than 61 votes (number of votes for the current 'Historical Most Popular Deal')?

      • +1

Yup, >=62 will be the next to appear in the list.

  • The Click Frenzy page is rendering weird for me…. Anyone else have this

    • Ctrl + Shift + R . Not sure why it's doing it though, does it for me too, will mention it to Scotty.

    • ClickMonday, not Click Frenzy ;)

      Working fine for me.

  • http://i.imgs.fyi/img/36ex.png - this is the wrong colour now

    • +1

Try to do a refresh. It should be fixed now.

      • after clearing caches it shows right

  • One of the choice tips displayed on the main page is outdated and mentions weekly posting competition which is now monthly.

    • Thanks for picking that up. That tip has been updated now.

  • A couple of things I've found:

    1. The pm wiki hasn't been updated to acknowledge that users can now be removed from a conversation
eg: (ab) And I think this should be "for".

    2. There is nothing under What's the history of ChoiceCheapies?

    3. This linked wiki page under "Show beta features" does not exist yet the link is unique to me though. You can find it under account settings.

    4. This link here and this link here go to the very old non-working domain name. Chilling effects has also renamed to Lumen but the link still works

    5. This hasn't been changed to be relevant yet over here

    6. All the wiki external links don't open in a new tab and a lot of internal links are marked as external links because they are the old domain name. eg: a, b, c, d, e

All things no one will ever see

    • 1. We did have a section on leaving a conversation but we should remove all the references on not able to do so in previous sections.

      2. Yes. Need to dig into the memory lane…

      6. I'll need to look into our wiki code so external links can honour the preference on opening in new tab/window.

I've managed to fix the rest. Thanks! The issue is with our sites (ChoiceCheapies, OzBargain & CheapCheapLah) all share the same code base and functionality, but different database and documentations so they do go out of sync. We'll need to come up with a solution there somehow.

      • Single database with (ha ha) one additional field denoting CC, OB, or CCL?

Sounds easy - should be a five minute job, of which I have plenty that manage to take months to complete :-)

        • The sites are actually hosted in different data centres close to the regions they are intended for, so a single database is out of question :)
