Just commenting to say, wow e-readers have come a long way! Reading the reviews it seems like colour e-ink still has a way to go but its a step in the right direction. For now I'll stick to my ten year old Kindle Paperwhite.

Kindle Paperwhite also looks to be on sale at a number of retailers for anyone looking for an Amazon device.

I so strongly prefer kobo to amazon kindle. The library was able to let you loan books and I did that often

If and when my Kindle dies (it's been going for about twenty years so far!) I suspect I will move to Kobo for this reason.

Having said that, I haven't actually bought a book from Amazon for about…. twenty years… anyway, so it probably doesn't make too much difference, but I like the idea of having the library option.

If, indeed. The new e-readers look great, but I just need my Kindle to show me black words on a white page. I'll probably still be using my Kindle 20 years from now so long as the battery doesn't crap itself.

I believe it was Aristotle who once said there's two types of e-reader owners: those who love the convenience of buying or renting ebooks, and those who have never bought or rented an ebook in their life.

I used to go around a month between charges, now it is closer to a week, but that's not bad after being used essentially every night, at least an hour, often a few hours, for twenty years.

I had always thought it was Anne Bonny - arghhh well.

      I DMOR: https://old.reddit.com/r/Onyx_Boox/comments/19czc16/a_genera…

Never heard of the brand (admittedly I don't know a lot about ebooks), googled it, clicked on a first website which was a nz store, - greeted by ebooks that cost 500-1000+ dollars. Second link on google was the one I posted.

    • I have nook and Kindles and I feel with Calibre software you send and read all most many formats of books , the positive of Kindle is all books even epubs and PDFs and others work beautifully when sync with Calibre .
And Kindle built quality is just amazing and reading experience is fantastic, paper white and scribe models have experience better then physical books imo .

The problem with boox is non of th software including there on app is highly optimised or customised for reading experience. If you do extensive research and physical try them out

That “24 month interest-free” is so predatory it should be illegal. $185 in fees outside the zero interest!

    • Youve counted the yearly fee twice ($65). And the $55 establishment fee is to apply for the gem card.

      • If you're paying over two years, you have to pay the yearly fee twice…

I have this Kobo. Upgraded from an older model and just love it.

why is colour ink better than black and white for reading?

Comics? I have an old nexus 7 as a comic reader, when it dies ill get a colour e ink.

why is colour ink better than black and white for reading?

I can't see any advantage either, but I guess for kids that might still be on picture books / comics (as quote mentions), it might work.

However, I'm not sure I would be encouraging kids to learn to read on an e-book reader - if they are at the picture book / comic stage, I'd probably give them those in traditional format, plus we still have loads sitting around in the attic anyway for reasons that (mostly) escape me :-)

        • Comics aren't just for kids - Igiven the price of comics and graphic novels I'd say most aren't for kids.

It's a serious medium for adults from which a number have been made into adult TV series and movies (not counting the Marvel and DC franchises). E.g. The Walking. Dead, the Boys, Road to Peredition, A history of Violence, The Watchmen, Dredd, end of the f world, snowpiercer, and the excellent comedy, Resident Alien.

I use [Pocket] (https://getpocket.com/) to save up articles I come across on my phone or computer and read them later on my Kobo. Many of the articles have colour photos/maps/charts etc. It syncs in the background over WiFi and NZ Herald premium articles also sync even though I don't have a subscription.

Its not - I have a Kobo Aura One but the automatic backlight was playing up so I purchased a Libra Colour and the contrast is much worse, the white is very grey unless you blast the backlight up very high.

If you are just reading books and have no interest in graphic novels then I would recommend a B&W ereader. Other than that the Libra Colour is very nice - I'm glad to have the physical buttons vs the Aura One and the Google Drive sync is a nice feature to have added.

Also to note there is no automatic brightness on the Libra Colour so I could have just turned off the setting on my Aura One and been no worse off - good times

  • Managed to get the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 32GB for $250 last year for my partner. First foray into eReaders but very impressed. I "permanently borrow" books from the internet and send them to her Kindle via email.

    • I "permanently borrow" books from the internet and send them to her Kindle via email.

You might want to consider just copying them over via USB cable, rather than emailing them through Amazon.

My Kindle is much older, so perhaps yours is different, but if I plug mine into my computer, it just shows up as an external USB drive.

      • Just easier that way at this stage since we live in two separate houses. Can usually send around 5-8 books at a time through Gmail.

        • Have you jailbroke the Kindle yet? Guide on youtube

          • @justaddwater: Did see that guide. But no. Works as required for my partner. Any book she wants, long battery life, no ads.

          • +1

@justaddwater: Just use something like Calibre to transfer/convert the books?

            • @Zyo:

Just use something like Calibre to transfer/convert the books?

You don't need Calibre to transfer them, but I use Calibre's CLI to do conversions (much quicker and easier than using the GUI).

  • I had been considering replacing my first gen libra anyway. This was a good motivation!

  • Can you use Libby with this?

Edit, seems like it will, sort of although the fact the Overdrive app has been discontinued is a bit worrying if you want to use this primarily as a Library book eReader.

    https://help.libbyapp.com/en-us/6251.htm

    • You can always use Adobe Digital Editions to download the Library book & sync with the ereader.

      • True, but annoyingly you need to use a PC to download Libby books to the e-reader.

        • No it's available for Mac OS as well.
