CamelCamelCamel. This is still the original Pro from 2019 but it's still going strong for me. I'm really glad I bought it a few years ago. Maybe an indication a new model is coming?
There are still updates coming through - the most recent is 9.2.1
The Shield is best used for gaming, as it has a comparatively massive GPU as well as the GeForce Now protocol being designed for it which allows you to stream an Nvidia equipped computer over the LAN, with the client device (Shield) returning the attached input method (such as any bluetooth capable controller).
However, the Nvidia GeForce Now protocol was reverse engineered and can now be used with any GPU (any brand) and near any device.
Sunshine for transmitting a stream (including over the internet)

Moonlight for receiving a stream

I have a server in Browns Bay with a Windows 11 VM that has an Nvidia Tesla P4 passed through to it, that I use to game on my IGP laptop in Totaravale. I was also able to comfortably game in a hotel on a laptop near New Plymouth when I went on a road trip earlier this year.
Streaming allows me to play my games on any Smart TV in the house, as well as my IGP only laptop, without the hassle of hauling around a desktop.
What’s your lag like with this setup? I’d worry about playing anything that’s not casual/strategy. Happy to find out I’m wrong!
I haven't had any lag issues, we're pretty well equipped here in NZ.
For example, I have a server cluster here in Auckland, and between three houses in the North Shore with consumer fibre connections, the cabled in servers have an average latency of 4ms between them. They're hooked up using a WireGuard site-to-site.
My laptop to the WAP has more latency than the server to the WAP across Auckland.
Hell, my bluetooth controller has more latency going 2 metres across the room, than 10KM between the two houses.
With that being said, I don't really play FPS or multiplayer games.
This is incorrect, they reverse engineered GameStream, which was discontinued.
Oh yeah I mixed up GeForce Now and GameStream, it's probably been two years since I used the GeForce Experience app (prior to running Sunshine).
Hands down the best streaming box you can buy. The only one that has passthrough of Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio. So if you’re big into streaming 4K Remux’s then this is the best you can get. I paid over $400 back in 2019 for mine.
Yeah, the only arguments against buying one now are "It's kinda old" and "it's kinda expensive". Lack of AV-1 decode hasn't proven to matter at all. It's still definitely the best Android TV box.
Would this media player be a good option for upscaling my collection of 720p movie files to 4k?
It kinda depends on the source. If there are clear lines like in cartoons, or say Formula 1, yeah, the upscaling is quite noticeable. If it's just normal footage of people, the difference is much less.
Bought it! Thank you 🙏
Rate these, I've had for about 4 years and it's replaced PC and other stuff. I use Plex for movies and it easily streams to our beach place. Still keeps getting software updates, last one about a month ago.
Mine has 1GB ethernet in, HDMI out to a Home Theatre Receiver connected to TV. Using apps like Plex, Kodi, Prime Video, Apple TV, Nebula.
It's been running strong for 4 years. Just works, no complex setup needed.
OOS? I’ve never used Amazon and can only seem to get a ‘Used - Good’ one in my cart. Unless I’m missing something
Womp womp 😔
Crazy with how popular these were thst they never updated them
Hard to compete with a bunch of decent android streaming boxes etc at lower pricepoints. I get the shield is better but the bulk of sales are <$200 SKU's
Yes. The only thing I really miss with the chromecast is the non ability to pass through those top audio codecs.
Im still seeing it as in stock for Nzd276 including delivery in case anyone is interested
Thanks for this. Was planning to buy one but have decided against it as it seems overkill for my use case since I have a dedicated Plex media server already and don’t need to watch 70gb Bluray Remux files.. looking at the Firestick 4K max now, half the price. Going to hold out to Prime day in a few days as well to hopefully snag a further discount..
Is this the OG pro a few years ago, or is HDR support a new feature? I don’t think I’ve seen a lot of updates to mine
