Where it says "e.g. no short codes or MMS/PXT", will that mean it is not possible to send messages to short codes? Or that it is not unlimited, and will cost an additional 20c?

    • +3

most likely no. since kogan and mightyape are the same bunch.

      • Ignore me I was thinking of Contact not Mighty, sorry

On Kogan some free short codes used to work, but it sounds like many don't anymore, and I think some never did. I think paid ones never did See e.g.https://www.cheapies.nz/comment/211334/redir, https://www.cheapies.nz/comment/107662/redir, https://www.cheapies.nz/comment/103610/redir, https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=42&topicid=290… and https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=42&topicid=310…

Even reporting scams to the DIA's 7726 evidently no longer works. Although last I checked you can still send number to 521 to get your number but I guess that's a base One NZ thing.

As mentioned in some of those comments, the big problem with both Kogan and I guess also Mighty is that they have no concept of money credit for accounts. You prepay for plans which might give you data, calls etc, but there is no way to add any money to your account you can use for such things. They either need to let you prepay for some short code bundle or add support for credit.

Likewise for international calls besides Australia, they have one or more bundles but ultimately if the place you want to call is not part of a bundle you're SoL AFAIK.

Technically sending SMS to free short codes should be fine, but I guess since they can't support paid ones, they haven't made a proper effort to support free ones either. I don't know what their deal with One NZ is, whether this is something One NZ handles or they actually have independent agreements with providers etc. If it's the latter, it makes even more sense they haven't bother to deal with it. I know you used to occasionally having problems where even receiving them didn't work e.g. there was one Burger King promotion that didn't work for a while but it could be this was just because the provider didn't properly handle the number range. (My local Mitre10 also had problems calling me a while ago.)

    • "As a Mighty Mobile customer your plan include 100 free MMS/PXT messages. We don't currently have an add on package after that however watch this space… "
No replies to short codes though.

Does anyone have real-world experience in using these rate-limited plans? Does 10Mbps work with normal browsing, social media etc?

    • +1

I used this Fast Plan (max data speed 10Mbps) to watch YouTube videos and internet browsing without any problem.

    • +1

I've been on the 10Mbps plan for the last 6 months, no issues at all.

    • I'm on the 10Mbps plan.

Honestly, I find no difference in performance between my home fibre network and my mobile data. Works really well for YouTube and everything else I throw at it

  • Whilst an affordable unlimited mobile data plan is welcome in the NZ market, 10Mbps seems rather slow for current times.
I got ~40Mbps down on 4G with Spark (and ~220Mbps down on 5G).

10mbps seems enough for a lot of uses, it would be fine for sd video, music streaming and general data purposes especially for use just out and about, these plans aren't designed to run your life. I think I'd take unlimited 10mbps over 1.25gb uncapped if this price was permanent.

Current I'm still running the top tier mighty mobile plan in my second Sim card slot and that's hit over 700mbps on 5g which is blooming great and faster than my fibre.

      • For sure. Good to have variety to suit a wider range of users.

I've been with Spark prepay $20 for quite some time so I currently have "Data Stack" of 6.7GB/month.
So effective 8GB/month with a $20plan which is more than enough for my usage.

        • Same here, had data stack since it was released so 6.5gb of that along with the 1.25 in the plan is generally enough. I took the mighty mobile $1 a month because why wouldn't you, using the second Sim card on that now so in month 4 of 6, that's put my rollover allowance back up to 3.5GB if I need it. It's been nice to just not care about data again and be reckless with my usage while I can but I wouldn't pay double what I pay for the privilege. Sparks data stack is actually a really good deal after you get through the early months, I'd definitely recommend pairing it with something like the $1 mighty mobile intro offer so you can build up some rollover and data stack while using the other Sim card.

        • in this case, I would recommend going with Kogan, especially during its promotion, you can get half-price for a large plan 15GB, full speed, for less than $20 a month. The only downside is capped data.
But you won't use all of them anyway.

    • 10mbps is good for av1 encoded full HD av1 streaming according to YouTube.
For most people this is sufficient for remote work (office, email, even teams meeting?)

  • +1

I've been looking at these plans recently, I would probably have jumped if the deal was on the 'Faster' Plan.

  • +1

Is this a good deal? Any catches or fine print to consider? Can we just switch away after 12 months?

    • +1

You can switch whenever you like.
It’s a monthly plan - the half price $20 is every month for up to 12 months. If you remain with them after this it goes to $40 per month thereafter.

If you don’t want to pay more than $20 per month then simply cancel the recurring payment anytime within the first year.
