    I jumped on thus one

Payment via Paypal only is an interesting one. Also, Jesus, this end of the pandemic has been expensive

    • +1

You can still pay by credit card via paypal, but yeah. Made me think twice and check the email to make sure it wasn't phishing.

      • Yeah I thought I'd misclicked so started the order over again.

    • +1

probably coming direct from a distribution center overseas since "Order can not contain other items"

      • +2

No it's expedited shipping ahead of other normal orders which might require pharmacist time to review meds/patient allergies

        • ahh, but paypal is interesting though šŸ¤”

  • +1

Although aren't these being handed out for free at testing centres?

    • +1

Correct, those will remain free for household contacts and the symptomatic.

As mentioned on the MoH site:

If you do not have COVID-19 symptoms and are not a household contact, but want to take a test, such as before going to visit friends or whānau, you can now buy a RAT at a participating retailer.

      • Ok thanks

    • +5

I just returned from the test centre with the self test kit. You can't get them if you don't have symptoms. And it was a long wait. So someone may still prefer to buy these at their own cost.

      • +3

        This. šŸ‘†šŸ» Me. šŸ‘‹šŸ»

        • Totally agree!

      • Here is a list of community testing centers that were handing out RAT test. (on mobile you can scroll horizontally for opening times) I know of 2 people who turned up and they were basically giving them away although it was limited stock and was a first serve basis. They just asked if you were a close contact or symptomatic, then handed it out.

The waits varied, the first one said it was a bit of a wait, but the second person said they had a good system going where they had a line of 3 people confirming close contact or symptomatic and was literally a quick drive through.

Obviously everyone is different so really only go if you need to, but if you are really freaked you could say you were at one of the locations of interest.

*Disclaimer: I'm not saying you will 100% get one as processes change, especially if this gets abused.

Since when did Cheapies value their time over money? šŸ˜…

        • +1

A friend waited 4 hours in Auckland with 3 sick kids (all tested positive). If by chance we get sick I would rather have the tests ready than have to drive somewhere and wait!

        • Well take your pick covid or few dollars

  • Does this type of test go way back deep into your nose, swab inside your nose, or swab inside your cheek?

  • Got some as well, thanks for posting.

  • Has there been an announcement about chemists being allowed to sell these? I thought there wasn't a fixed date yet, just sometime in March.

    • +3

      It's been announced:

      https://www.health.govt.nz/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-ā€¦

      RATs for the general public

RATs are also available to members of the public if they develop symptoms or become a household contact of a case.

If you do not have COVID-19 symptoms and are not a household contact, but want to take a test, such as before going to visit friends or whānau, you can now buy a RAT at a participating retailer.

These RATs will be sourced and sold by the private market but must be of RATs approved by the Ministry.

They will not be drawn from the supply for the public health response. RATs available for public sale will be sourced from the private market who will also set pricing and distribution.

RATs from the Ministry of Healthā€™s central supply will not be made available for public sale ā€“ they are being distributed to support the public health response.

Retail sales of RATs to individual members of the public is regulated under the Commerce Act 1986, the Fair Trading Act 1986 and the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.

Anyone with concerns about the pricing of RATs can notify MBIEā€™s Price watch website.

Where action may be appropriate, these complaints will be referred to the Commerce Commission.

RATs approved by the Ministry (https://www.health.govt.nz/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-ā€¦)

  • This is a good resource to use to contrast and compare different RAT tests - https://www.tga.gov.au/covid-19-rapid-antigen-self-tests-areā€¦

  • For what it's worth the orient gene ones like this wholesale around $6 a unit locally on 850 units and up so this is not bad retail. I thought these were available for the public till March 1? Wish these had been available earlier, they are a super useful tool

    • They will be available in march but i bet these must be direct from the supplier, other pharmacies will get the shipment around the 3rd so its best to buy when they are in nz.
It states "Priority orders - shipped same/next day beginning 28/2/22"

  • For the convenience of having some on hand and so being able to sidestep the almost inevitable (but hopefully temporary) wait times and hoop jumping required to get a free one, this seems like a really good deal. Itā€™s a bit of crystal ball gazing as to retail price and availability of them for the next couple weeks at least, so $9 per test is reasonable ā€œinsurance policy premiumā€ for me. 4 in our household so bought 2 boxes.

    Many thanks for sharing OP.

    • +1

Yeah I looked at it that way too, no stress waiting in line for a test for hours if/when we need it.

Nothing wrong with wufoo.com, but anyone can make any form they like there.

Direct link from https://www.chemistwarehouse.co.nz with a valid cert terminating at DigiCert Inc though, so perhaps legit….

  • +2

Well done to Chemist Warehouse. The pricing seems fair, and itā€™s great to have other options for people that donā€™t mind paying.

Free delivery is outstanding, in the current climate Iā€™m sure it was tempting to add a handling fee or whatever. AAA+++

    • +1

I agree. Bargain Chemist are selling the same RATs for 22% more - Chemist Warehouse is $179.96 for 20, Bargain Chemist is $219.80 (also with free shipping). It looks like Bargain Chemist doesn't dispatch until the 2nd of March.

      • But, we should be supporting local businesses right? haha

        • +1

You try and avoid buying from Amazon AU

          • @The Hound: Seriously. Even having singular, small items shipped can be cheaper than buying from here.

  • What's the estimated expiry dates on these kits?

  • It looks like the Healgen version is slightly cheaper at Bargain Chemist, $176 for 20 including free shipping - https://www.bargainchemist.co.nz/collections/rapid-antigen-tā€¦ - does anyone know if this is the same test kit? On the MOH approved list there's a couple of listings with the manufacturer Healgen Scientific Limited Liability Company (United States of America) or Zhejiang Orient Gene Biotech Co., Ltd (China)

No fixed shipping date though, just that it will be the first week of March.

  • Interesting, that is even cheaper than in AU.

  • Got a few free test kits from Auckland Covid testing centre yesterday. Drive through and 2 minutes queue.
We don't have any symptoms but son is closed contact from school.
The nurse just asked us how many we want today.

  • Gilmours was pre-selling Orient Gene RATs at cost which was $6.59 incl GST each. But that opportunity has finished and the RATs are on their way apparently. $9 incl shipping is a very good price.

  • Does anyone know how long these can be used? In other words, the expiry date.

    • Sorry noticed a comment saying they have a two year shelf life.

  • Thanks, bought a box

  • Got charged $15 each for two orient gene RATs last night at after hours Unichem in chch. Someone's clipping the ticket šŸ™„

    • We got given 3 packs of 4 of the Panbio ones below for free, just had to ring up and then drive and collect them. About $200 worth at AUS retail.

    • +1

Not really, most pharmacies are paying much more then this deals retail price just to get stock, at $15 I can almost guarantee that they would have a very slim margin on that.

      • You are right - price to purchase for many smaller pharmacies is more than/ same as chemist warehouse is selling for atm, plus the above person bought singles, plus was an after hours chemist.

Don't know why you are getting down voted

        • Unichem is not a small, independent chemist.
They were also selling boxes at a very high price too compared to other.

          • @c3rn: Yeah, Unichem is one of those pharmacies where things are more expensive, like the Mitre 10 of pharmacies…haha

Pharmacies have been clipping the ticket for ages, until CW came along, so many pharmacies are offering free prescriptions now, but Unichem is still charging for prescriptions.

            • @akrotohur: The prescription fee is a government charge, that $5 doesn't go to the pharmacy. Businesses are using that as a loss leader, and countdown were the ones to start it in nz to attract shoppers as far as I'm aware.

Chemist warehouse commonly has no stock of their loss leader sales as it still attracts customers in the door.

What I'm getting at is small pharmacy chains can't just start charging no fee and competing in price with CW.

They also have larger buying power than many

              • +2

@Rowjo: It's great to see Unichem finally got named and shamed, they deserve it. They are not an average "small pharmacy chains", it's unfortunate that some of these so called "NZ owned and operated" businesses are ripping off kiwis and profiteering off the pandemic, so much for supporting local businesses….haha

COVID-19: Pharmacy's inflated price for box of rapid antigen tests shocks shopper
                https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/money/2022/03/covid-19-pharmaā€¦

                ….

Wanting to avoid COVID-19 testing queues, Channa, who is based in Wellington, told Newshub he purchased five RATs from Unichem Upper Hutt on Tuesday for $62.99.

But he was "shocked" to find PAK'nSAVE supermarkets will sell a five-pack of rapid antigen tests for $32.99.

Having paid almost double the price indicated by supermarkets, Channa now suspects the pharmacy is cashing in on current high demand.

"Keeping a reasonable margin is fine, but $63 looks outrageous," he told Newshub.

A spokesperson for Green Cross Health, which owns Unichem, said pharmacies in the group had been reminded to observe "fair and reasonable pricing", suggesting Newshub contact the store concerned.

On Wednesday, a staff member at Unichem Upper Hutt confirmed the same test could be purchased for $52.99 - $10 less than on Tuesday, adding that there were only three boxes left.

                ….

                • +1

@akrotohur: When covid first happened in 2020, my local unichem was charging $6.99 for a blue surgical mask. Total ripped off.

              • @Rowjo: Rowjo since when was Green Cross Health a small business?

      • Completely agree RKL - So many people seem to have little or no understanding of how the world around them actually works.

    • +1

our medical suppliers charge more than chemist warehouse. and that's before we pay for GST and shipping etc. we need it to test our employees so won't be selling them but i would guess most business will need to add some margin to pay their rent, electricity, staff etc too as we're not a charity

  • Got the Panbio Covid Antigen Self Test kits sent from India.
    heard better reviews about them.

    https://amzn.to/3solKde

    • How did you get Amazon.in to ship to NZ? I've also read good reviews on them and it looks like they're approved by the MOH.

      • they don't ship to NZ unfortunately. I had family send them over along with a few other things. RATs have been in use in India for about an year now.

  • +1

saw this from bargain chemist. $176 for 20
    https://www.bargainchemist.co.nz/collections/hand-sanitiser-ā€¦

    • Good to see there are other options available.
Probably more than most people would want to buy for themselves, but saves you 19c per test.
Might be a good option for business .

  • is the government giving out free ones? a few per household like in AU?

    • +1

Not like they did in Aus, but if you have symptoms and ring a testing centre you can go and collect some (Or have a test onsite). Sounds like YMMV though, so maybe ask around different testing locations.

      • Are you talking about the popup testing centres that are handing them out? Why are people waiting 7 hours to get a test if they can just call for one?

        • Well, we still had to wait about that amount of time, they gave us a time to go and pick them up. It was like one of those "We'll call you back when it's your turn in the queue" deals, but I don't know if others do phone orders or not, it's just how our local seems to be operating. You then drive to the back entrance and they come and meet you then check against their list. It's a GP/local clinic/testing centre.

  • I see they have extended the shipping time to 48-72 hours.

    • +2

I placed an order on Thursday morning for normal (non RAT) items and have just (Sunday 18:30!) received an email from Chemist Warehouse advising that due to the large number of orders my order may be delayed up to "1 week in getting your order out".

This is terrible customer service from Chemist Warehouse and shows no regard for their customers. I notice they've already taken my payment and the website gives no mention of week long delays in shipping.

I'm glad I'm not self-isolating and waiting on Chemist Warehouse to deliver medical essentials; they are a joke.

      • Chemist Warehouse have been having shipping delays for a couple months now. I ordered stuff on 24th Jan, at the time it did have a banner on their website saying to expect delays due to high demand, so figured it might be a few days. But it wasn't ready to ship until 2 weeks later.

      • +1

I agree it is terrible service. Did they not anticipate there would be a lot of demand for this item?

        • The above post was talking about non RAT items

        • They have always been slow with shipping in my experience, its easier to just go in store and buy them

    • +1

I hope they pull through - really want these ASAP!

My previous experience with Chemist Warehouse is that they have 1+ week delays as ā€œin stockā€ items cannot be found at their warehouse so they delay the whole order, then give up on the missing items.

Fingers crossed they have the supplies in Auckland and itā€™ll just be dispatched on Monday or Tuesday.

    • +1

I saw that today, wont be happy if these arrive after paknsave start selling them

  • +2

For those that donā€™t want to wait. Our local life pharmacy has heaps in stock today. Limit 5. They were 49.95 for 5. Or $15 each. Iā€™m happy with the 49.95 price and getting them straight away. They were the Healgen brand.

  • +5

I just heard on the radio that in the next few weeks New World and PacnSave will have 5 packs at cost (approx $35).
They have ordered a couple of hundred thousand so I imagine they will sell quick.

    • +2

      per the herald.

Rapid Antigen Tests to hit supermarket shelves next week
Foodstuffs North Island chief executive Chris Quin told Newstalk ZB they had several hundreds of thousands of RATS on their way and expected them to be on the shelves next week.

Shoppers would be able to buy a five-pack for $32.99, which is $6.60 per test.

"We made a commitment at the beginning to sell these at our cost.

      • +1

Great, I wonder if I can cancel this bullshit Chemist Warehouse "priority" order

        • +1

You will get the item before paypal disputes gets resolved. all online orders have to be asked via email, i didnt get a chance to go in today to find when they have them instore (should be tomorrow) and they dont answer the phone.

          • @coffeee: But with PayPal disputes, you get chemist warehouse to notice you

    • i hope there is enough supply to cover panic buying.

      • The Gov stock is secure for those who need it(ie ill people or close contacts etc), as of today they should have ~22m units(10m was due to arrive last weekend) and another ~150m units to arrive over the next 6 months.

Then private stock is on top of that, one of the TM sellers says over 100k in stock in their listing so I imagine there will be a number of private companies trying to get easy money with large orders. Hopefully the supermarkets will keep the prices low and get a reasonable amount of stock..

  • They have a link for which one has it in stock (none so far)
    https://www.chemistwarehouse.co.nz/rats-availability

  • +1

    Anyone received these?

    • +1

Hah, I haven't even received a shipping notification

    • +1

No shipping notification,& instead of dispatch in 24 hrs its now 72hrs on website. They don't have stock and have just legged everyone over before paknsave retail them.

    • I went into the glen innes store today and the staff didnt know when it will be in stock to purchase they said online only right now, the other phamacies have them first in first serve.

    • +1

I ordered Sat morning and got a shipping notification yesterday evening - Chemist Warehouse link shows 'In Transit', buts that's a bit generous, as clicking through to the NZ Post Tracking link shows 'Tracking number allocated to parcel' - hopefully gets picked up soon and the rest start flowing quickly.
