Probably the cheapest way to get dental care around, as it's the AUT dental hygiene school students in their final year. Anyone can go, don't need to be associated with AUT. Bear in mind they don't do fillings or more serious treatments, if you need that and still want it cheap, go to the Otago Dental School, also in Auckland.

Basically you pay once in the calendar year and can go for up to 5 standard cleaning and assessment appointments for that one low price. Any extra treatment is priced as below

I know Cheapies will be keen to hear this too but they have also given me free toothpaste, floss and toothbrushes when I ask

OVERVIEW

Niho Ora ki Manukau (Oral Health Manukau) operates as a teaching clinic. Second and third-year AUT oral health students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Science (Oral Health) provide oral health care supervised by experienced and registered oral health practitioners and strictly following Dental Council guidelines, standards and competencies.

As this is a student clinic, your treatment may take more than one appointment.

Please note: We do not offer services to provide immediate relief from acute pain in adults.

WHAT WE OFFER

Free dental examinations and treatment for children and adolescents until their 18th birthday

Free preventive oral health care for hapū (pregnant) māmā and pēpē (baby)

Periodontal (gum) treatments

Comprehensive examination and oral health assessments

Diagnostic dental radiographs (x-rays) to assess teeth and bone conditions

Full mouth scale and polish (removal of plaque and calculus/tartar), with local anaesthetic (numbing) if required

Diagnostic saliva testing

Oral cancer screening and risk assessment

Bleaching (whitening) tray and mouthguard fabrication

Information about how to look after your teeth and gums, and products you may need

Specialist referrals

PRICING

Costs for Niho Ora ki Manukau services
The cost of your treatment at the AUT oral health clinic in Manukau is determined by the assessment of your oral health, including any identified issues or problems.

Following the initial consultation, you will be provided with an estimate for the treatment expenses. Please note that your treatment may take up to five appointments to complete.

Children (<18 years)
Exam, radiographs, fillings, scale and prophylaxis polish = Free

Adults (no Community Services Card)
Assessment, radiographs if required, scale and prophylaxis polish (full course of care) = $60

Additional appointment (includes review) = $20

Adults (Community Services Card)
Assessment, radiographs if required, scale and prophylaxis polish (full course of care) = $40

Additional appointment (includes review) = $10

Other services

Tooth whitening (stent and kit) = $230

Mouthguard
From $210* (plus $40 for additional colours (if more than two) and $45 for any graphics)

Hapū (pregnant) māmā and pēpē (baby) up to 9 months= Free

Staff and students of AUT = 20% discount

    Has anyone tried fillings at Otago Dental School? Just wondering what the cost is like compared to normal dentist.

      Enrolments are closed unless you have urgent needs iirc but the cost is substantially lower(ie not $350 a filling). No idea on current pricing as it's time based iirc + xray costs etc.

      You could try The Dental Walrus and get a quote, said to be one of the cheaper dunedin options or Te Kāika Dunedin will be cheaper than normal dentists. If you have a CSC then you might be eligible for some level of discounted dental care depending on income etc.

        Sorry I should have been more clear but I am in Auckland and not on CSC. I have been quoted $180/filling by MoonStone Dental Care in Auckland. So far the cheapest ones.

      $135 for 1.5 hour consult / first appointment / xray. $135 for 1.5 hour treatment - which can accommodate maybe ?2 fillings? so $270 minimum, done by dental students

    Do these hygiene students have indemnity insurance?
    What happens if something goes wrong?
    For 5x scaling this is a good deal. But there still need to be accountability

      Yeah pretty hard for something to go wrong, their equipment shouldn't harm you anyway

        How would their equipment not harm you…? Going to the dentist has never been pain-free. They dig into the gaps between your gum and one wrong poke and those sharp tools will hurt your gum or tongue. I think they make this cheap for a reason in order to give inexperienced students some practice. It's a good idea, but don't expect them to have the same skills as a professional dentist. Even professional dentists can screw up your oral health, like prolonged wisdom tooth extraction could cause your jaw to lock up or something. Plenty of examples.

          Yes pain is common, I meant long-term harm though which is, I would say, unlikely given it's just a scaling

          Pain free for me. Never had pain. Each case is different, so tough to generalise.

            @Latex Fist: Lucky you then. But I’m pretty sure most people dislike going to the dentist for a reason.

            There’s also a reason why toothpastes specifically made for sensitive teeth, like Sensodyne, exist. Having sensitive teeth doesn’t always mean sharp pain — it can also feel like soreness or general discomfort, and it’s not a pleasant feeling.

            Going to the dentist doesn’t always mean you’ll experience actual pain either, but you’ll probably feel some level of discomfort or uneasiness during the process.

    Just a question, where did you get the "Basically you pay once in the calendar year and can go for up to 5 standard cleaning and assessment appointments for that one low price." from? According to their pricing chart, I think for adults without a Community Services Card, one, instead of 5, cleaning and assessment is $60.

      On the Costs page it says "treatment may take up to five appointments to complete" and under the price for Adults / Assessment it says "(full course of care)"

      Also I just went for my third appointment this year and only had to pay for the first, plus have been several times the last few years, only paying once in that year each time

    I'm a bit confused.

    and yet, they do offer this - "Periodontal (gum) treatments".

    That's considered as serious treatment, no? Some of that involves peeling your gums back and they'll scrape down your teeth properly and then reseal the gums, or whatever the term is. That's not a simple 60~90 mins scaling job, that's typically a $3000 job.

    Anyway, a few questions:
    - It's $60 for up to 5 visits (let's assume just normal scale and polish sessions). What if you need to go a 6th or 7th time? That's another $60? Or would they reject you due to reaching the max quota, and you'd have to wait till the following year to go again?

    • Since it's a student clinic, I don't suppose you'd see the same person regularly then? I'd prefer if my dentist/GP always stay the same, because part of it is they know your history and there's also a level of trust and confidence established.

    • Would the student clinic have access to your current dental history? Would that be transferred to them?

    • Does health/dental insurance cover this? I'm with Southern Cross and they cover a part of my dental expenses, but I'd still have to pay like $80 or whatever per scaling/polish session.

      I'm no dental expert, call and ask them what their treatments entail and if there's a guarantee or something

      • Not 100% sure but I think an appointment after the initial 5 would fall under "Additional Appointment" which in the Costs list is $20

      • I've had a couple of times I've seen the same person in a row, but other times it's been different people. Luck of the draw

      • They only seemed to have my records for being with them specifically, not other records, though I've hardly been to the dentist ever so I'm not sure

      • When I was with NIB they refused to cover it. When I was with Unimed they covered it every time

      Honestly man you get what you pay for. I've always been happy going to this place but if you want peace of mind then pay more going elsewhere

        In terms of just scaling and polish, would you say they've done a decent job, or comparable to going to a standard clinic?

          Again I've hardly been to the dentist ever so can't compare but they do seem to do a great job. Their supervisor always checks their work and does touch ups etc

      If people have bad teeth and need fillings or more serious work, they do X-rays at the AUT clinic and can refer them to proper dentists for that work if necessary
