Dell XPS PC w/ i7-11700, GTX 3060 Ti, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD + 1TB HDD $2091.60 at Dell

110
KONG7

After the expiry of the awesome Dell deal from earlier in the week, I was browsing the Dell site and found this PC with a 3060 TI, with a standard mouse and keyboard, 16 gigs of ram, 512gb SSD + 1tb HD, for an absolute bargain with the KONG7 code.

I then managed to find a monitor to add for a further $260ish: Dell 27 Monitor: S2721HN (comes up under 'more' when it gives you a list of monitors you can add. It's 55% off, and another $19.50 comes off with KONG7.

Overall the system + Monitor comes to $2350.61.

To me, that's an awesome price for a new generation graphics card + everything you need to run the PC if you're starting from scratch. Keen for any commentary though on if this isn't as good as it seems.

Looks like a great deal to me. Compare it to other pre builts with a 3060 ti and it's a steal. Slower RAM then you normally see in a gaming pc but doubt that would make much difference. I like the look of the case and it even has an optical drive. If I had a 2k price range I would get this over a second hand PC.

    • Thanks! Yeah, the ram is a bit slower, and I'm not sure if it's upgradeable either (though I assume it is).

Given how new the graphics card is (and the whole system relative to my 2015 laptop with integrated graphics….) I think this would be a pretty major upgrade!

i checked PB Tech and Computer Lounge, and couldn't find anything even close to comparable, but want the wisdom of the Cheapies crowd :-)

The monitor is really because I don't have one at all and it was the cheapest biggest one they seemed to have available.

This is excellent, OP! A couple options spring to mind. 1 - cheap way to get a very respectable latest gen gaming rig. 2 - if you're not a gamer, sell the gfx card for around 2k (the mobo has onboard gfx) and end up with an extremely cheap, or potentially free, work/home desktop. Unless I'm missing something here, this seems awesome.

    • Thanks! I think I'd be keener to hold on to the card, seems like it would last for a few years. But even comparing to 1660 ti desktops this is still a great price as far as I can tell. Seems almost too good to be true!

I'm not a gamer. I do a bit of streaming (webinars/tutorials) via a camlink and then video editing. Would I be all good to sell the graphics card and use the integrated one?

      • +1

I've done a bit of digging and found that the GPU in the XPS 8940 is an Intel UHD Graphics 630. From a quick search based on other people's experiences with the GPU, webinar/tutorial streaming would run fine but video editing would likely be a bit slow and painful. I'd recommend taking a look on Google here to get a complete picture of performance and see what others are saying.

        • +1

It's UHD Graphics 750 based on the processor

        • +1

Thanks! The UHD 750 should be all good.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that, some really helpful comments there!

Wish I had puller the trigger on the previous deal.

    • +1

Me too! My FOMO is what led me to finding this one. Not as great but much more within my budget.

  • +1

Will this be a good gaming pc?

    • +1

I think it will be pretty decent - it's the newest generation of graphics cards. If you look up the 3060 TI there's plenty of benchmarking results out there :-)

Is it worth getting any extended cover from Dell?

    • +1

I didn't, and I guess would rely on consumer guarantees act. Even adding an extra year of cover through Dell seemed really expensive.

      • +1

Agreed with joshtnz, anything in NZ (which this counts as) that you're buying as an end consumer will be covered by the CGA.
Extended warranties are a waste of money IMO - I have heard that people pay this though so that they don't have to "argue" with the suppliers but I'd rather spend my money elsewhere.

I wonder if you're able to gut the PC and swap parts in and out in the future, usually prebuilts like to do funky things

    • +1

and Dell pre-builts can have proprietary PSU/Mobo.

      • +1

yeah some of the older ones I pulled apart to see if I can frankenstein something all had soldered on CPU and different sized motherboards.
Usually PSU/Mobo is where they cheap out on since people don't usually use that as any indicator how good the PC is

      • thats a big pass

    • +1

The RAM, GPU, and SATA connectors, yes (obviously with RAM, have to check that they can support the timings, and obviously if the case can support whatever you wanna throw in it).

Mobo and CPU might be a bit harder depending on how/what they've done in the pre-built.

PSUs are going to be a nightmare to replace if it shits out (you'd need to find the correct form factor and wattage that your one uses and find a second-hand or replacement somewhere).

  • Here's a good (if slightly overdone) review of a similar 3070 system https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXmE8wESzFo

It's got me wondering what CPU cooler this comes with as the reviewer points out the one they show in their marketing material is not the one installed in his system.

Evidently thermal throttling of the CPU holds the entire system back when gaming.

Still tempted though so thanks for posting! :)

Edit: reading the discussion on OzBargain it seems Dell only use the heavy-duty cooler on the K versions of the Intel CPUs.

    • +1

Yeah this isn't the k version as far as I can tell. I don't think I'll be pushing this system to its limits, but compared to some of the 1660 TI laptops I was looking at for very similar prices, this still seems to be a great deal. I might just have to take a side panel off if cooling becomes a real issue.

      • +1

Yeah I've been looking at laptops too and this is a very tempting alternative. It'd definitely fulfill my gaming needs but also looks like a good one for photo/video work.

      • +2

The standard cooling improvement for this case is to replace the cooler with a Noctua NH-U9S which has matching mounting holes as the standard cooler, and add a fan to the front.

        • +1

From a bit of research it seems getting your hands on one of the K-series Dell CPU coolers is easier and cheaper.

          • @Aerol: Do you mean buying a K-series cooler from Dell to swap out? Do they sell these parts directly?

            • @joshtnz: Yep, though my entire knowledge of this matter comes from this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TkpHWKVgNE so I'm certainly not an authority here :) There appears to be endless pages of discussion on Dells own forums about all this stuff.

I just got this email address [email protected] from Dell Support chat to check stock on the part number: Dell Tower Cooler - VWMTJ

              • @Aerol: Very nice - keen to hear how you get on!

                • @joshtnz: Unsurprisingly I never got a response from Dell to my email. This deal is back on again with the usual expiry time of next Thursday.

                  • @Aerol: Disappointing to have no response though! Did you end up getting any of these deals?

                    • +1

@joshtnz: No I decided to wait and see since they seem to be on rotation at the moment. Also I need to stop spending money lol

  • +2

Just a heads up for the ones dying of fomo, I got a "better" configuration and in black for 3,400 trough the chat. you need to ask to use the coupon LOVEKEANU and type the configuration. The offer ends tonight!

    • Did you get a monitor mate

      • yep, the bundle was back so I got keyboard+mouse+cpu+monitor

  • Has anyone who bought this deal from Dell seen their PC yet? My order was placed on May 5th with an estimated ship date of today and estimated arrival of 18th June. It has been sat at the "confirmed about to enter production" stage for over 4 weeks.

Very disappointing and I've yet to receive notification if it will be delayed or not.

    • I placed my order on the 5th May with a estimated ship date of 3rd June, got shipping notification on the 28th May and nzpost tracking number yesterday after it arrived from AUS. Expected delivery on the 9th of June (original was 18th). Note that the shipping notification was only one day after the 'In Production' notification so hopefully yours won't be far behind.

      • Thanks, that's better news than I expected although if my estimated ship date was only 1 day after yours I wonder why it hasn't entered production yet. Fingers cross Dell get their finger out and it's with me soon…..

      • My order finally entered production on 8th June and has sat there without update for the last week while still showing estimated delivery of 18th June (4 days time).

Trying to get any sensible updated from Dell is impossible yet they've been sitting on my $2000+ for over 5 weeks.

Very disappointing customer service from Dell.

      • Update: Dell have provided a tentative ETA of 23rd August, another 2 month delay!

I think it's time to test Dell's cancellation policy as I wouldn't have ordered this PC with a 3.5 month lead time :(

        • Did you have any luck? Told someone about this deal as it was still going last week and they ordered one. BTW if you do get it it's a good deal considering the current price of GPU's, the 3060ti performs really well, I was a bit worried because it's a 2 fan version but it goes great.

          • @taeken: I eventually pulled the pin on cancelling this order after 4 phone calls and even asking our Dell Account Manager to follow up for me (we order $150k+ of equipment from Dell annually) but get nothing firm other than late August at the earliest.

Cancelling was pretty easy and credit appeared back on my card 9 days later. Amazing how they can charge your card instantly online but refunds take so much longer….

Still sorry I missed out on the deal, especially given the graphics card included, but by the time the PC arrived something better more than likely would have been available for the same $.

        • Well should if stayed with the r11. R12 delayed until late November..what a joke 3.6k early may they took and now they are saying November. You would think there system can track stock and have a reasonable idea of shipping times.

          • @Robbert: My R11 arrived a few weeks ago but the XPS keeps getting bumped by a week, every week. I'm going to play hardball with support today and try to at least get a freebie out of it

            • @NeM2k2: Yes canceling the R11 was a mistake. I will never shop with Dell again. I thought as a global company they would know what they are doing. It is quite clear after dealing with them they don't. Completely untrustworthy.

        • +1

Mine arrived this week. It was delayed 3 times, so I complained to customer support, and it magically shipped within a couple of days after that… and they gave me $25 refund for the delay after I badgered them about the crap service. Not great, but happy to have it finally as my new Plex server.
