At a time where household budgets might be stretched and we are spending an increased amount of time at home here is a deal that Powershop have been running for a long time but is still available.

Sign up your main home to Powershop on or before Sunday 31 May 2020 and we'll give you $150, spread over your first 12 months. You’re also guaranteed to save in your first year (Ts & Cs apply). If you sign up, your friend gets a $100 power credit of their own.

Your friend will receive a credit of $150, payable over 12 months as follows: their first credit of $25 will be paid once they’ve switched to Powershop, followed by a $10 credit in each of their 10 following monthly account review periods, and a final credit of $25 in the final account review period of their first year as a Powershop customer (Friend Credit). • I am not sure about kWh prices for power shop , I use flick and on spot rate it's from 3 cents to 13 cents kWh on weekends and night and 15 to 43 cents a kWh in the day peak most of the time or around 18 cents on average , - we save around 10 to 25 nzd a week on flick

I tried flick a year ago and they were more expensive than mercury energy and ended up having to pay me what I didn’t save. Needless to say I moved on from flick!

      • Unit of power is kWh, price of power is the cents per kWh , on top of it you paid fix daily charge with flick you pay retailer charges on top of it which is 2 cents per kWh which is included in there price per kWh ,
I have checked for my ICP price in CHCH per kWh plus daily charges for electronic kiwi , powerhouse , contact , trust power , and a few others they all charge higher on average then spot price of power in any month example winter months and summer months ,

In NZ you have option for 4 meter configuration I am on single meter 24 hours on this meter flick gives me day and night prices for kWh/ power as it's spot prices no one else does that . So this is facts as above explained , so you need to know the end price for kWh and daily connection price to compare and spot prices are always lower on average

    • Powershop matches the competitors rates, am with them and they promise to beat competitors rates by $150 over a year.i find them pretty good

There all the same these power companies.im With Contact energy at $0.33 per day charge and KW charge is $0.27. With a promot payment of 28% not a single power company can match that.

    • I don't think the power companies are legally able to offer prompt payment discounts anymore. In theory their new plans offer better value to everyone.

      • There on a 6 months notice to remove it. There new plans are the same and offer only 3%. Winners for the new law are people who used to pay there power late and didn't get the payment prompt discount. I'm currently on a 2 year contract:).

    • Prompt payment discounts are the same as a late payment fee except that it sounds nicer; a smoke and mirrors tactic to obfuscate the real cost.

        Agree with you completely

think it depends where you live as to whats the best deal. I'm with electric kiwi in CHCH its $0.2792/kWh and $0.3700/day (including GST) for low user. But I use the prepaid option so they give you 10% more when ya top up and have the free hour, they estimate you will save another 10% with this, I have managed to average 17.5%. The only other option that comes close is flick.

Electric has $50 cred with referral sign up, which its always run.

    • How can you get the extra 10 off? i search electric kiwi's site and cant find anything relates to the 10% off?

its the plan type. https://www.electrickiwi.co.nz/plans/ —> stay ahead 200 plan.

        Prepay $200 - then get $20 additional free (10%)

thanks, it works out cheaper for me

        • Wasn't aware of this plan but changed, in addition to the 10% bonus they also gave me a lower rate so it pays to check. Thanks will save a not insignificant amount.

          • @taeken: and credit card fees are waived for prepay… points!!!!

This is not exactly 10% off (though I can see why it looks that way). Pay $180 and get $200 credit would be the equivalent of 10% off.

Pay $200 and get $220 is actually 9.1% off.

  • don't forget you have Ecotricity to compare with everyone! do the calculations

  • Update, a family members 1 year contract was expiring they have spoken to contact and they have offered to drop KW charge from $0.27 to $0.22. Plus a $150 credit for 12 months contract and 3% prompt payment discount.Daily charge will be $0.33. It pays to talk to your current retailer you can get a better deal.
