These are a factory refurbished product. A refurbished product is one which usually has been returned to the supplier and is then fixed by a technician and thoroughly tested. As a result, refurbished products will usually have a lower rate of return than new products since they are all individually checked and tested while new products are not always. So all-in-all, these perform like a brand new product (although you may find some minor cosmetic imperfections), and you get them at a fraction of the price! Please note: Product may not come in original packaging.

Please Note: This item is supplied with a third party wall adapter which does not have an Ethernet connection as stated in the instruction manual.

there's a new one coming out very soon that has a remote attached to it which I would highly recommend you wait for because it will be a game changer

    • I don't know anything about the new one yet but you could be right. A controller might make a world of difference.

After seeing a friend raving about his on facebook I decided to get one, but I found it almost useless. It's been unplugged for 95% of the 2 years I've had it. I had thought it would let me detach from my laptop & constantly plugging HDMI cable to the TV. Sure enough you can play youtube videos from your phone - but it's either slow or difficult or impossible to do anything more advanced than that e.g. changing playback speeds.

Almost immediately I just went back to my laptop/HDMI and wireless keyboard. I knew VLC 3.0 was bringing chromecast support so I kept it thinking it might be more suited to watching a single long video rather than navigating through multiple short videos. But in the meantime I got a small HDMI switcher so I just press a mechanical button to switch between TV and computer monitor now instead of mucking around changing plugs. So with the wireless keyboard/mouse and the HDMI switcher it's actually still quicker, easier and more versatile to just stick with the laptop.

Maybe I haven't invested enough time learning how to use it properly, would be interested to hear how others are using theirs.

Sure enough you can play youtube videos from your phone

it needs another external device to play youtube videos from??

        • Well you need something to control the Chromecast device with, yes. So you can open up youtube on your phone and choose to play the videos on the big screen via Chromecast - but you still need that phone or tablet or computer to make the Chromecast do something.

        • @choc squiggle: I thought chromecast is an android media device, with built in youtube and browser and other apps…

@justaddwater: You have to control that built-in youtube app with something else - like a PC/phone/tablet. Once you choose some media content on such a device you tell it to 'cast' to the chromecast device. The chromecast will then go out to the internet via your wifi and get the content itself so it's not streaming through your phone and killing the battery. But it's just a small round disc shaped object that plugs into your HDMI port and USB for power. You can't connect a keyboard/mouse. How are you going to tell it to do anything without some input/control device? That's why you need another device that works in conjunction with it. Unless I'm doing it wrong lol :)

    • The Chromecast works with HDMI-CEC Deck Control so you can just use your TVs remote for basic features, but it is app dependent on implementation, I'd probably only find it useful with a separate remote if the Chromecase worked like Android TV with it's own apps in built without needing a another device to stream from or initiate a stream.

@Choc Squiggle I love using the Chromecast personally, everyone has a own remote(ie their smartphone), so can choose whatever they want to watch. When using on demand streaming services like Netflix, Youtube and the like it works really well since all the data goes direct from the internet to the Chromecast instead of through your device and then relayed. Your smartphone just sets it up. It's great for sharing personal pictures and videos from your cellphone, since you don't need to worry about HDMI ports, adapters or loading it on to SD cards or other devices.
VLC has been over 3.0 for a while now. But I'm never going to using Windows 10 and their awful UWP apps so really only suitable for local media for myself

      • @Dazza Thanks for all that, I have a feeling I don't fit into the particular use cases that you describe and that's why I've not found it very useful. Yes it's great that everyone can have their own 'remote', but I live on my own and my visitors are not technically minded. I don't have Netflix and I don't take many photos to share either, mostly just to remind myself how to put things back together as I'm pulling them apart lol.

I do use Youtube a lot but as I've said I find the android/chromecast app really limiting compared to the laptop/browser experience. It's particularly cumbersome to just flick back a few seconds if I want to repeat something (I watch a lot of technical / instructional videos). On the laptop I can just hit the left arrow couple times but haven't found an easy way to do that in the app (you have to use the slider along the bottom which isn't so accurate with small screen and fat fingers).

I guess as you said it's very App dependent. I think for me at the moment it's a solution looking for a problem. My laptop is permanently hooked up to my TV (and another monitor at my desk) and I have wireless keyboard/mouse that I can take to the couch. I love the idea of Chromecast but this other setup just works better/faster for my uses. Thanks again for the ideas though.

        • Yeah I think you're right it doesn't really fit into your usage profile. Hard to beat a laptop/desktop and hardwired for a responsive and precision control experience. Especially so if you learn all the youtube and VLC shortcut keys or use the mouse wheel for fastforward and rewind control.

    • chromecast with remote control hmm… they will have to change the name to chrome-media-player lol
