  • I got the old google tv stuck in the back of the tv and runs everything fine would this be an upgrade worth buying. Main use is tv1/tv3 you tube and stremio.

    • If you've got the previous version 4K no. If you have a lot of apps yes and you keep losing your remote yes but other than that I have both and there's not much difference. And of course you've gotta get a HDMI cable. Of course there's a ethernet cable connection which would be quite handy if your Wi-Fi network wasn't that good.

    • I’ve gone from the 4k to the streamer. Would do it again. Find the streamer more snappy going through menus, also had the 4k dropping wifi sometimes, so no issues with Ethernet. Plus finding the remote is handy - have used it a couple of times.

      • I picked up USB c to USB and Ethernet for mine and it works great with gigabit speeds. You can get them on ali express and it's cheaper than a whole new streamer if that is the only thing causing problems.

  • Has anyone successfully used nord vpn with this?

    • Yes. It works fine. I have 4k version and streamer.

  • Tempted, the android interface on my TV is starting to big down and keeps changing my default settings to ignore the replacement launcher I installed to stop the home screen ads. I have a 4K stick but heard Google are planning to end support for anything older than the HD model.

  • Just successfully price matched in store at pbtech

    • PB doesn’t add an extra 15% off, do they?

      • Nope, but it was closer for me than Noel Leeming.

  • How does this compare with Xiaomi MI Gen 3?

  • Streamer is really snappy compared to 4k. I run projectivy launcher on both. Really like the minimal display with only few apps on screen. Stremio and Nuvio feels way better with streamer. Only thing I don't like is the addition of hdmi cable. Though I just stuck it behind the tv.

Fyi: There is no hdmi cable in the box, so do get one if you don't have any spares.

    • Does it play Stremio 4k files well? Any limitations?

      • No issues with 4k hdr. I think DV profile7 is not supported maybe. But I play only hdr10 as I have ambilight via hyperion which anyway don't support DV.

      • I believe Google generally dislikes some audio format like true hd. Personally I haven't found many issues on stremio but jellyfin content can be hit and miss on of it needs audio transcoding.

    • have you tried casting from your phone to projectivity? for some reason its not working for me anymore. sure it did when i installed it a while back.

      • It's not something I do but I use replica app once in a while. Don't really see the point to cast for my use case

  • Pbtech has now dropped the price to match this.

  • I'm looking to kick Sky which the Mrs likes for all her crap House programs and the selection of shows. However in order to get her to like whatever I choose it has to have a remote which is easy to use she doesn't like having to scroll through on screen menus etc. Who's got any suggestions ?

  • Note that if you have a fancy speaker setup that you want to do audio passthrough, this thing cannot do it, except Dolby Digital with or without Atmos. It will always decode other audio formats and do PCM via HDMI. If you just use it for YouTube or Netflix then it should be fine.

  • Also this is a thread border router if you want to get the gear from ikea but take it into google home or something else without buying the ikea dirigera.

    • This was sort of the decider for me, not sure how well it will work locally offline with home assistant, but was worth solving my tv problems and having this on hand to look at trying out with some matter/thread devices.

  • I was using a chromecast with googleTV but the amount of ads on youtube increased dramatically. I bought a TV98 android box for half the price, installed smart tube and now have no ads, plus way more playback options and works with custom remotes.

    • I just installed smart tube on my Google tv? Although I forget which version I have, it's one with the remote. Not just basic chrome cast.

  • Thanks. Finally a price I'm willing to pay for this. Its RRP seems ridiculous for its specs.

  • I'd jump in this if they had upgraded the audio compatibly. I'm at a loss as to why they wouldn't support pass thru of Dolby True HD and DTS Master audio. It seems like the bandwidth shouldn't be an issue. Which makes me think it might be some kid if licensing issue. Regardless, it's a little irritating, not being able to get the most out of the audio system I have.

    • Agreed. Got the nvidia shield pro years ago and it was a wise purchase with supporting those high resolution audio files

  • Thanks Team.
works like magic. Love the bult in ai - just send the command and does everything.
Took a while to get my head around why Google home wasn't signing me in when creating a google account within the app. I wanted a separate account for this.
