Note for those looking to shuck these: recent posts on /r/DataHoarder suggest these are more likely to be Barracudas than Exoses.

    • Is that good or bad?

      • +3

Bad, the barracudas are specced for a much smaller workload - not that you are getting much of a warranty on an imported and shucked drive, but also the performance I have had when using barracudas has been trashtier compared to my WD reds and exos drives. Not as bad as a shingled drive but so many mysterious long pauses with nothing happening leading to video playback stuttering etc when having other IO happening on the drive too, like moving stuff from the torrenting machine to the storage drive will make anything play on it have interuptions with the barracuda but perfect on the wd red or exos storage spaces.

        • The 28TB is almost definitely HAMR so I'm not sure sure how well experiences on other drivers will hold up. The 24TB possibly could be as well, but harder to say. If it is HAMR it should have a class 1 laser label somewhere.

At least for WD, you just register the drive on their (WD support) website and get full warranty when brought from B&H. I returned a drive to Thailand following their RMA process that was returned into the enclosure after taking it out and they sent a replacement even with an NZ power adapter.

The total price appear to be the option - I'll handle (Duty & Tax) myself

You might need to pay 15% GST on top if custom picks it up

    • So plus GST?

    • +4

Customs won't touch it as it is under $1000. They rely on the retailer to collect sub $1000 amounts. That is the great thing about being able to use that option on BH, unlike say Amazon who automatically collect it.

    What’s the postage like?

    • +1

IIRC It comes in its retail box and packed in another box, but its been a long while since I got a drive last.
Guess I'll know now when the 28TB ordered comes

  • +1

Some of the WDs look a good price too.

    • +1

They are better than retail here but bit more expensive than the Seagates

      • Personally would recommend paying that little bit extra for WD. I had very bad experience with Seagates, one dead in 3.5years just after the warranty, another dead in 4 years. Sent it for repair and was quoted for 500. The shop owner told me it is very common with Seagate.

        • I've always be WD for a similar reason and have never had a failure yet touch wood and all that.

I notice the Blue range doesn't go that high anymore.

Anyone know anything about the Black "for gamers" option?
That goes to 10TB internal at $356 NZD and uses CMR tech

          • +2

@Jaxson: Yeah all my Western Digital HDDs have been great. I've had multiple Seagate's fail on me, which is why I wouldn't touch them myself.

        • I guess it depends, I've had no issues with either apart from single dead drive from each but that happened years after I moved my important data from them out of the 20-30 drives I've had

would be an awesome deal if nzd was not toilet paper.

    • +3

Yeah but that ain't gonna fix itself for a few years now, so either wait a few years or just bite the crusty pie.

    • +3

We have leaders in government who were elected because they know exactly what is required to get the New Zealand economy booming, I'm sure any day now we will see their rock solid plans delivering a strong NZD and business will be on the up.

      • +1

        I hope that’s sarcasm,lol

        • +2

Any day now I'm sure. Once all the unemployed public servants have regained meaningful employment in this very favorable for workers economy the government has been working hard to create we will see just how good at economics holders of English degrees are. Have no doubts, close your eyes and every little thing is going to be all right.

  • I got a single 20 tb seagate 3.5 from pb tech 450 ish nzd it was ex demo came with only 2 year warranty

Has anyone ordered from B&H and handled customs and duty tax themselves? (Order under $1000)
    Did pass customs without issues

    • +2

plenty of times, no issues - long as its under 1k

    • +1

      No issues.

Bought Nanuk cases and smaller photography equipment so many times, never asked for it.

  • +1

Anyone here know how B&H handles DOA/30 day warranty claims? Presumably return to B&H at buyer's expense rather? I'm tempted, but the thought of potentially having to pay $200-$250* to return it if it's DOA is extremely off-putting. (*Based on online post estimate for an external-HDD-sized box + a couple cm of packing.)

    • +1

I shipped my WD via WD warranty to Thailand for ~$80. I knocked it over from standing to flat down while running and they sent a new one replacing the US power adapter with an NZ one.

  • Is it worth shucking a USB 3.2 drive? The USB interface would not be throughput bottleneck would it?

  • +1

    Temporary price drop on 24TB US$266.49 (~NZ$490.13) [~NZ$20.42/TB]

Received the 28TB drive, came in its retail packaging with printed till receipt.
Cellophane wrapped box, with tamper sticker on opening area. Inside the drive is held securely by foam pieces
Power supply is 110-240v with international adapters
