I'll be buying whatever the best deal is on a couple of 20-24TB Exos or WD Reds, so I really hope so.

      • +1

Yeah let’s all share the love on whatever deals are found.

I hear WD has had some major manufacturing flaws recently so I might need to research that a bit deeper.

Ugh, really? Maybe I'll stick to Exos (or Barracuda?) then. Seriously tempted to try my luck and shuck an external.

            And from AI overview:
How to Avoid SMR and Ensure Safety
The key to safety is selecting the right drive technology for your workload.

Choose CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording): For demanding applications, always use CMR drives (also known as PMR or Perpendicular Magnetic Recording).

            • WD's current product lines clearly list CMR in their specifications. The "Plus" and "Pro" lines of WD Red drives use CMR.

            • Larger capacity drives (typically 8TB and up) are generally CMR, even in the standard consumer lines.

            • +2

@Jaxson: Oh if it's just an SMR/CMR thing then I'm not worried, I'd never buy an SMR drive regardless of manufacturer.

If you (or anyone reading this) spots any kind of deals on large (min 16TB) spinning HDDs, please do post!

  • The pb tech 4TB NM790 is great drive and a good price at $464 considering the global shortages are driving prices up so much. PCIe 5 nvme isn't really worth the premium in terms of performance.

HP FX900 plus 4 TB is also a good buy at Extreme PC for $448. It's TLC dram less with excellent performance.

  • Hmm I think 99% of people won't benefit from this. Gen 5 only helps with extreme workloads like 8K video editing, massive file transfers or benchmarks.

Why did the prices for nvme rise so dramatically? 2tb nvme (tlc not qlc) used to be $120 shipped a 2-3 years ago, I thought prices would only decline from there.

    • I think the ai bubble, same with ddr ram.

      • is it really just the AI bubble? so when this pops are prices likely to decrease or will these prices become the new normal? GPUs prices have remained high post covid.

        • +1

Prices are still in an upswing, it's currently about $110 for a 500GB Gen4 NVMe and $180 for a 1TB one for new stock from manufacturers.

Retail prices are still catching up though, so now will be probably be the best time to buy for a while.
The WD Blue SN5000 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVME SSD at PB Tech for $199 is a good price.

Manufacturers will ramp up production to meet the demand, which will drop the price, but that's pretty long-term, and then the AI bubble will probably pop which I'd say would drop prices to all time lows.

@inthiseconomy: man even $200 is inconceivable considering prices for even faster drives a few years ago, buying anything now feels like buying the top.

            • @Vic: PB's stock will be from before the big price increases, it's going to go up a lot.

A model like the Kingston NV3 2TB is around $330 for new stock from distributors in NZ.

The same model is already up in Australia, $299 x1.05 AUD to NZD = ~$361 NZD.
