You can also use AT with any tap and go card. So 1 less card to carry around.

    • Yes seems defunct to be offering these cards still but 10 is 10..

is contactless prices the same now ? hop used to be cheaper.
      Edit it is - https://at.govt.nz/bus-train-ferry/fares-discounts/bus-and-t…

Contactless payments are available for standard adult AT HOP fares only. Contactless payments are not available for concessions or discounts.
Customers who use an AT HOP card qualify for our $50 7-day fare cap.
Customers using a contactless payment method qualify for our $20 daily fare cap.

      • Thanks for the details.
As a casual user, I had no idea they had different fare structure, how odd.

    • +3

      No concession on contactless payments

      • Do you know if it’s discounts when you hop from bus to train or does it charge as two fares?

        • Charges for the "journey" regardless how many trains or buses you take

    Terms & Conditions says:
    c. has not used an existing active HOP card in the past 180 days;

so even if you’re not a new customer, you might still have a chance if you haven’t used it for over six months.

    • Signed up and received an email saying my HOP card is on the way. No idea how they're tracking the 180 days but I don't think they are.

  • +2

I don't know how many people would be genuinely signing up for one, but given that there's only 500 cards available over the two month promotional period it feels a little scummy grabbing one just for the sake of a free $10

    • True, 745 clickthroughs so far.. maybe I should expire the deal…

      • +2

It was quite helpful for me,I signed up for one and never had a AT card beforehand.
Maybe leaving a note saying to only use if genuine should do the trick.10$ is not a crazy amount.

        • Appreciate the deal (and post!). I am a recent arrival to Auckland so this is great for me.

  • Is this card just a normal AT Hop with loaded credit?, so after the promotion is over I could continue to use it?

    • +2

That’s what it seems, the 10$ is just credited to your card for use.

      1. c. On-going use of this AT HOP card will be monitored solely for the purposes of determining the impact of the promotion and establishing behaviour change.
      • Reads like monitoring will continue indefinitely, but they're doing this anyway, aren't they?
      • yea they would do this with every card for analytics, monitor your routine and improve services.

        • It also enables them to display fault information relevant to you

You can buy a HOP card at a kiosk with no ID or personal info at all, and you can top it up with cash.
There are cameras in the stations though, so they may be monitoring for tinfoil hats.

      • Cameras? I feel safer already.

Giving a thumbs up, even if a little off topic.
The surveillance state is a real concern.

    • Or you could buy one without registering, or just use Paywave to pay your fare.

To be fair, this is more understandable than the pita pit palava.
