Motu Move prepaid cards are currently free for a limited time across Greater Christchurch.

You can pick up a Motu Move card for $0 from participating retailers across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri. A minimum $5 top-up is required when getting the card.

Free Card Offer Ends 22 November 2026

The free card offer runs until 22 November 2026.

From 23 November 2026, Motu Move cards will cost $10 from retailers, plus the minimum top-up.

Children and Community Services Card holders will still be eligible for a free Motu Move card after this date, available from the Christchurch Bus Interchange.

Where to Get a Motu Move Card

Cards are available from participating Motu Move retailers across Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri.

Metrocard & Cash End 23 November

From 23 November 2026, Metrocard and cash will no longer be accepted on Metro services in Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri.

With Motu Move you can pay using:

• A Motu Move prepaid card
• Contactless debit or credit card
• Smartphone or smartwatch

There are no contactless surcharges.

Eligible concessions can also be linked to Motu Move.

  From what I understand, there is really no need for this card as you can use contactless debit/credit card and you still get the discount.
  Only use case would be if you want to pre pay.

    That is correct this is prepaid card for people who would like the convenience of having certain amount of money / people with no debit card or kids for example

    Only correct for adult. For children, teenage, super gold card, they will need a card to get discount or free.

      You can apply discounts to your debit card a prepaid card is not necessary

    Why? It makes sense when it's a single card used across the whole country.
