Seemed like the BOGOF or the 50% off is around March-May and/or towards December.

Mine ends in 31 Aug so this will be right but will be paying slightly more than the 50% off. I'm wondering whether to jump on this or "gamble" on the next BOGOF and switchover to something else in the mean time

    • I'm the same in terms of expiry date - I got the same 40% off deal at the same time last year

    • Kogan birthday sale is in August - last year in August 2024 they did 40% off the Large and Extra Large plans, just like this deal.

They then did 48% off just the Extra Large plan in October.

Then BOGOF on the Medium, Large, and Extra Large in November for Black Friday.

Probably did a deal on Boxing Day too, but can't see it in the Cheapies records.

Then they did a BOGOF on Large and Extra Large in March 2025.

      • Nope, they skipped Boxing Day last year for some reason!

        • Interesting. Maybe too close to Black Friday when they're doing big sales every fews months instead.

I guess the lesson for now is if you have two people (so want BOGOF) then you probably gotta buy in March or November (with November being the most certain sale of the bunch).

And if you are just one person, you probably gotta buy in May or August (to get the 40% off , with August being the more certain one).

Unless you want Extra Large, in which case maybe hold out for 48% in October (although out of all of the sales, that seems to be the one most unlikely to repeat, I guess we'll see).

  • My existing plan expires late September…

Hop on this and renew on the 31st of August and lose approx. 1 month, or wait it out for potentially another deal in time?

Potentially gone are the days of 50% off.

    • I'm in the exact same situation!
Not sure what to do. I'd be pretty annoyed if this is the only deal until then 😕

    • Mines is 7 September renewal (40% off plan).

So makes sense for me to jump on this and lose out on one week?

      • I'd lose 3 weeks and it seems like the right move. Over a month I probably wouldnt.

  • +3

People are complaining, but is there a better deal in NZ at this current time? I'd love to know

    • +1

I agree, I was also waiting for this type of deal & I'm happy with 10% less than what I wanted.
$198 for one year is a pretty good deal especially compared to the prices of One NZ whose network I'm using via Kogan.

    • +1

Yeah it's undeniably a good deal, and gives a lot of data.

Have only heard of one better deal available to purchase in NZ, but only if you just need a few GBs a month, and if your phone supports Esim.

Three Hong Kong do an annual Esim plan that includes NZ, 30GB for 268 HKD ($57 NZD), 30GB Data + 5GB extra Social Data. https://www.three.com.hk/prepaid/DIY/en/offer/travel

That takes care of your data needs. For calls and texts, pair it with a physical sim card with Warehouse mobile, pay 16c per minute or text, and whenever you need to make a long phone call, buy the $4 talk pack that gives 200 minutes.

So you get data from Three Hong Kong, and calls and texts with Warehouse Mobile. Keeps the overall monthly cost to just above $5.

  • Probably a silly question. But would like to know from someone who has done this before. Can I renew on the 31.08 if my plan ends 05.09? It does let you renew before your plan ends?

    • +1

      Yes.
The thing to note is that the moment you renew you lose anything remaining on your existing plan.
In your case that makes sense as it’s only 5 days but definitely don’t do it earlier as it will take effect straight away. It does not stack.

    • Same boat but mines (previous 40% off deal) renews on 7 Sept.

Guessing you just lose out on 1 week.

      • Correct.
The only thing you hope they don't offer a 50% off after the 30th June when you have already bought the 40% off voucher.
That's just the chance you take.
I'll probably do the same thing and buy this for my kids plans which expire in the first half of September.

  • Can you move spark number to Logan using this plan?

    • +1

Assuming you mean Kogan rather than Logan then the answer is yes.
When you redeem the voucher code you can choose to use the number that comes with the Kogan SIM or port your number from another provider such as Spark.

  • Really tempted to finally move away from Skinny for this.

For current users, is Kogan's coverage good?
I hear they've fixed the short code number issue.
    Can you hotspot?
    Overseas roaming working ok?
    Any other issues?

    Danke!

    • +1

Ive found coverage to be great (mostly upper South Island, down to Chch). Short codes are fine. Yes to hotspotting. Not sure about overseas roaming, but honestly I have nothing to complain about with Kogan! Into my second year after leaving Vodafone and will hopefully keep using them for as long as they keep offering such great value.

    • +2

In terms of roaming these plans are for use in NZ only.
If your phone has WiFi calling then you can make & receive calls / txt over a wifi connection when overseas without any additional cost but you need to be connected to WiFi to do so.

Roaming packs are available but are expensive - better to just get a local SIM in my opinion if you’re travelling.

      • Hi @bigcheese
How does wifi calling work on Kogan? I never could get it to work with Skinny…

        • +1

As long as your phone supports WiFi calling it’s as simple as turning WiFi calling on and it should work on Kogan.
Your phone should then use your WiFi signal to make and receive calls and texts.

          • @bigcheese: Hmm.. Doesn't work for me, I don't know why. I have a Samsung Galaxy which should work fine.

I have WiFi calling switched on but I switch off the network/SIM when I'm abroad. No calls or text come through.

Am I meant to leave the network on but simply turn off data? Won't that incur mega charges if someone calls me?

            • +1

@strangercheapie: Your provider has to support Wi-Fi: calling as well as your phone even though it shows it's turned on being Kogan a third-party to Vodafone probably doesn't

            • +1

@strangercheapie: When roaming you need to leave data enabled, but you also need a valid data plan either by having a local sim (if you have a dual sim phone) or an e-SIM with data if your phone supports that.

I have Samsung S23+ and worked for me when I travelled to Japan a few months ago. I purchased a data e-sim.

              • @kiwi harry: Thanks @kiwi harry
How to do this in practice? ELI5 please…
To avoid roaming charges how can you leave data enabled without switching off the SIM (Skinny or Kogan etc)? I have an eSIM with data…

                I think I'm missing something simple…

                • +1

@strangercheapie: You should have SIM Manager in your phone settings. Within there you can select which sim to use for data.

I switched this setting; just before my flight departed NZ, to use the esim for data.

General advice is to make sure your esim is activated a day or two before travel.

                  • @kiwi harry: Thank you, I remember that setting!

Do you switch off calls and messages so that you don't incur charges?
Will wifi calling still work if these are off?

                  • @kiwi harry: Not sure how I've messed this up but tried what you suggested and got charged $1.15 for a text message I sent!

I got carried away as SMS were coming thru so I thought the WiFi thingy is working. I replied a text and got hit.

I've turned off the Skinny SIM now…

                    • @strangercheapie: My setup advice was only in relation how it works with a Kogan SIM.

A quick google search indicates that Spark and Skinny do not allow Wifi calling from overseas.

                      • @kiwi harry: Ah! Thanks. I've been looking for a direct answer to that question and couldn't find it.
Wifi calling should be permitted IMHO, le the people use the tech!
                        Thanks a lot.

        • Wifi calling without Whatsapps or Signal?

    • +1

I've found it great, with Spark I didn't even get 5G in Auckland but I do with Kogan for some reason

    • +1

      Its been great!

    • +1

I moved from Skinny and I'm happy with it. Everything works just as well. The roaming packs are pretty expensive so if you dont have esim you might want to hang onto your Skinny SIM or plan to buy one at destination. Fwiw I found Skinny roaming to not work at all in San Francisco.

      • Thank you. I use an eSIM for data when abroad and have never roamed.

Kogan is only a wee bit more expensive than skinny (90c), still eye-watering though.

    • Oof!
No time to get a SIM delivered unfortuntely!

      • Happy to include a Kogan SIM if you need it

    • +1

      Pm!

      • Replied!

    • Please PM me if still not sold.

      • Sent you a PM!

  • How do you apply this to your account if an existing customer? I want to keep my number / plan expires at the end of this month

    • Just login to your account and you will see an option to 'Renew or Buy PrePay Plan'
Then enter the code after you select 'I have an email with a voucher code'

It will apply straight away so don't input the code until the last day of your current plan or once expired.

  • Convinced a friend to jump on last year. it took 3 months to a get a sim card. after three orders and repeated messages back and forth with the overseas customer service. Skinny has a 15% off deal on the yearly plan.

  • Does anyone have a large or xl plan they are selling from the bogof deal? Please pm if you do thanks

  • Does anyone know can you renew with Kogan and then port to another number down the track? I need the plan for 2 months only and then plan to pass this to one of my kids as getting a work phone in my new job. Thanks

    • +2

The plan is attached to the number once you activate the voucher. If you port your number to another network then the balance of the plan is gone - you can’t pass it on.

  • +1

I got one Large for like $160, expires tomorrow though

    • Hey, does this expire today? Still available.

      • Hey mate, yes it expires tonight just before midnight, I would be keen to sell it still - just dm if you want it still

  • So - am I too late to get in on the BOGOF Large Plan w/someone?

    • +1

Yes. The BOGOF plan had to be activated by yesterday 31st May.
You’ll have to go with this deal at 40% off if you need one now.

      • Chur:

Sorry, really don't know how this mobile stuff works, and I only just spotted this, as I was wondering what to do, as after well over 3 decades (yes!!!) with whatever was before Voda etc (Bellsouth etc) they now make it clear to me that it is definitely time to use a different supplier.

40% Off seems fine, so I just need to navigate its purchase and stopping Voda billing me lol.

        Must be a tutorial somewhere…

Have given Vida dozens of chances to come to the party, I can't even get a double months charge back off of them from when they changed their name, somehow I paid August 2023 twice I think it was…. then to thank me, they have increased the price of my plan.

Spent hours on the phone with them, and their AI, comedy.

        Thanks BC

        • Yeah looks like billing cycle ends 20th of each month, so just go to link at top and sign up to start on the 20th ?

Does Kogan tell Voda the customer has left etc or is it more complicated ?

          • @rolex: I have a SIM card in my phone will that work okay ?

            • @rolex: Right… looks like in NZL Kogan users need a Kogan SIM card

Also look like its essential as the eSIM function doesn't;t work on NZL

              • +1

@rolex: Yes, Kogan NZ is only physical sim.
Your existing SIM won’t work and you need to use a Kogan SIM with the plan.
As it sometimes takes them a while to post it out I would suggest you order straight away if you think this plan will suit your needs.
The voucher code will arrive by email pretty much straight away but you have until the end of August to activate.
Porting your number is done at the time of activating your Kogan plan. You don’t need to contact One NZ just make sure you do it a few days before your next month is due to be charged so that you don’t incur additional cost.

                • @bigcheese: Thanks BC,

For over 30 years we haven't ourselves chosen to change providers, so will give Voda a few days, we've reached out many times, and again today but thanks very much, a few of us will all do exactly the same thing next week, we're all talking haha

We all just got emails from Kogan after signing up, they 'talk' about eSIM

                  https://www.timekeeper.co.nz/filedata/fetch?id=85828&d=17487…

                  • +1

@rolex: Kogan is Oz based so the eSim they are referring to is for Australia.
Make sure you sign up for Kogan NZ and not Kogan AU which definitely requires a physical Kogan SIM.

  • I had the code for the last B1G1.

The code was redeemed on Saturday 31st May 2025 (still unused in terms of GB/Data) as this was the last day the code expires.

You will have to pick up the nano sim card for free at either Greenhithe or Auckland CBD.

I will give you the log-in for the account which has all the delays of the plan, and you basically just need to put in the sim card into your phone and it's good to go.

I've changed the number from Kogan (028) to Vodafone (021) already so you will have a fresh 021 number, because who wants an 028 number

    • Can you port numbers after an initial port?

      • +1

If you do that you’ll lose the plan which is attached to the initial mobile number.

      • +1

I don't think so, you would just need to use the new Vodafone number by using the Kogan sim
