any free online fax service that can receive back faxes? otherwise looks like the lawyers have won this game

    • +2

Confirmed working with 2Talk voip and a free fax line added to numbers under cloud pbx. It didn't appear to deduct any credit either?

    • Dunno about free, but you could give your library a call.

  • +1

I recall buying one in 1996 and it came with a cardboard surround. When it was removed the shredded lettuce fell out. Looking at the photo in McDonald's app it appears the structural integrity has been improved.

    • +8

I thought you were talking about buying a fax machine up until "shredded lettuce"

      • He was - they were locally produced.

  • +2

    this is hilarious LOL

  • Can confirm this works, just received my code and put it into the app. Dinner tomorrow sorted!

  • +4

    What's a fax?

Just got my voucher. Here are the steps folks using the 2talk Fax to Email service.

    1) Create an account with 2talk - 2Talk
    2) Select 2Talk Go Free as your plan under 2Talk Voice.
    3) Enter your details and under payment options choose Direct credit and Get it Now.
    4) You will receive an activation email where you need to ring into a Toll Free number and activate your account using the provided code.
    5) This will prompt a new email stating your account is active and to reset your PW.
    6) Login to 2Talk Under Manage Numbers. Select Country = NZ, Region = 028, Type = Fax, Plan = 2Talk 028 Number. Select Add number.
    7) Under Manage Numbers, select your new 028 Fax number. This will open a new window.
    8) Under Fax Settings —> Faxmail sending options, enter your email address on the allowed list. By default you will receive fax to the email you signed up with but this can be changed under Faxmail delivery options.
    9) Create a PDF containing the word 'Kiwi' and send an email to [email protected] with the PDF attached. You will receive a send confirmation from 2talk.
    10) Wait intensifies….
    11) Profit.

I suspect that service won't be around much longer LOL.

      • +1

I think it will.. 2Talk/Vocus are very unlikely to remove something that has been around for as long as I can remember, least for a few folks trying to score a burger.

        • +1

Yeah this isn't a public service. 2talk make money off people calling or faxing 028 numbers, it's similar to calling a mobile number. It's how they can keep the service as a nominally free one, so I doubt they will get rid of it over this.

          • @Nil Einne: I thought the same but it does look like the 028 option is gone now when setting up a new number.
I checked after Wagner made this comment and sure enough no ability to select 028
            It was definitely there before

    • awesome thanks for the detailed instructions, im stuck at step 9, how do i send the email? how does it know what my fax number is?

      • +2

You just send the email to [email protected]. They will automatically append your A party Fax number you created in step 6.

        • thanks! received my fax!

    • How long did you guys have to wait after sending out the email lol

      • 16 minutes for me

    • Stuck on Step 4. Nothing in my emails…

      • Eventually I got an email saying:

We will need to confirm some account details before we can activate your account. Please call +64 28 899 1234 to speak with one of our operators.

So I think they have seen many registrations today and have set the process to manual now.

    • Worked thank you

    • Got one. Thank you!

    • Awesome thanks you deserve a burger!

    • +1

Think I"d rather go against Cheapies principles on this one and just spend the $10 or whatever it is on a Kiwiburger. I used to really like those ones Mc'D's made they were about the best burger they ever made.

    • Worked for me, got the email fax reply and redeemed via the code. Thanks OP and @moona for the steps. LEEEGEND

    • Cheers mate, got mine. It's very easy following your steps!!

    • Got confirmation that fax was sent, just a waiting game to see if all have been claimed or I followed instructions wrong

      • All gone I believe.

        • Still available.
I created a new account 20 minutes ago to get a voucher for one of my kids and it's just arrived now.

    • Do you know if it cost any money to send these fax? Will we get a bill after the end of billing cycle?

      • +1

There is no way to bill you as you do not enter any payment details.
It doesn't cost you anything to send or receive the fax.

        • For further clarity, 2talk is a prepaid service. If something is charged you need to add money to your account beforehand https://support.2talk.co.nz/how-to-pay-2talk

2talk gives you 10 free national minutes a month on their free lines. https://www.2talk.co.nz/pricing Sending the fax probably takes less than one minute so you should be able to send 9 more, or call NZ geographical number for 9 minutes, over the next month.

Receiving faxes/calls should always be free for you the recipient with a 028 number. It's how 2talk makes money on this, the interchange rates are similar or the same for 028 non-geographical numbers as they are for mobile numbers so they're receiving fees from the other party's provider. (If it's 2talk to 2talk they just keep it free for all.)

If you try to send too many faxes or make too many calls, or try to send a fax to or call a mobile number or international number, it should fail if you didn't add credit.

    • got one for lunch today thank you

    • More upvotes than most deals around here lol

      • i think this is going spark some news story about how faxing is coming back!

        • Bit surprised that this offer hasn't been published more widely. Nothing but Geekzone and Cheapies pops up if I search for this offer on the Googs.

          • +2

@Wakrak: maybe they are only advertising via fax?

          • +2

@Wakrak: And that’s only because you posted on both platforms 😆

    • +1

2Talk may have deleted 028 from the regions dropdown menu now! I'm a bit late to this offer, but that's what it seems like to me. I take it there's no other company in NZ who run a free fax-to-email service like that?

      • Yep, just checked. Not there anymore

        • The fun is over folks.

Really may need to dust off grandpa's fax machine now.

        • +1

          They’re back now

          • @Tmurder91: Also showing for me on my account which is very old. It's possible they ran out 028 numbers and needed to get more. I find this unlikely for various reasons but hard to say how wide this has actually gone, except less than 5000.

Could also be a 2talk glitch, I've found their website can glitch at times although for me the problem is generally that you select New Zealand and the region thing doesn't show.

Edit: Actually I think it shows States and the drop down list doesn't work, but either way the point is more doesn't work rather than just not showing 028.

Anyway whatever happened a bit weird. One thing is we don't really know how long it was gone for, it came back quickly from the first report especially since it was overnight on a Saturday but maybe just no one tried it for a while that bothered to report here. We'll see what happens going forward, since it's come back and I'm assuming the number of new customers has reduced, seems to be even less likely they'll just get rid of it.

      • Still showing on my account ? https://i.imgur.com/k9euBLn.png

      • +1

down due to ddos from the 4000 new sign ups just this week lol

  • Worked for me too - at least I got a fax back with a code.

Whether it works in the McDonalds app or not will depend on family trying it out :-)

  • Have received the code but app won’t accept it, will try it again in morning incase it’s down for maintenance

    • Had to manually enter mine. QR wouldn't take.

      • Worked now, didnt work when I copy/pasted code but finally accepted when I typed it in

Nice!! Finally some Kiwi uniqle-to-kiwi food i found!! As an immigrant ive always been wanting to have some Kiwi food - something like Chinese food for Chinese, Indian food for indian, Mexican food for Mexican, that kind of Kiwi food for kiwis! I dont have a fax machine and I usually order by vouchers at Maccas but tomorrow id definitely go for it and pay the price in full!!!

  • +1

Edit-password cannot have non alphanumeric symbols.

    • so just stick to BK

      • That won't work, the BK King XL and all Kings/Big Mac clones promos are finished AFAIK

  • Lunch sorted! Thanks OP

  • Got my fax!
    Cheers OP

  • Great deal. Thanks

  • Having problems logging into 2talk after activating. What is the username? Tried both account no & email.

    • Username is the account number.

  • Too much effort to get a free burger for me but admire the dedication of all you cheapies.nz!

    • +2

Not if you have a fax machine already hooked up.
      hehe

    • Not really. It was a very easy process. The only issue is the burger is pretty tiny. How can it be worth over $10. It would say it is a $5 burger max, as smaller than a Big Mac, and probably not as nice. But it is still quite a nice burger, reminds me more of a small Burger King burger TBH.

      • That's interesting because in the TV advert it shows a woman holding one and it looks reasonably sizeable. Deceptive advertising as usual.

The original Kiwi Burger at Mc'd's some years ago was a really good burger.

        • Its the woman that's tiny, not the burger!

Wtf… did chatgpt come up with this idea?

    • +4

not chatgpt but faxgpt, chatgpt predecessor

      • +3

Yeah, took a while to get a response though.
Every time you asked a question it took 15 minutes to answer.

        • +1

I also found that I got a load of 'commercial messages' between each real one.

  • Are the QR codes unique? Can someone just post an image of their fax?

    • Yes they do seem unique. You have to load it manually into your account via the app.

    • The QR codes don't work anyway. Well I tried on my Android phone and my partner on their iOS and both had to manually enter the code.

      • Sorta lol that they bothered to include a QR code on their fax but didn't implement it properly.

Mind you and I don't know if this is because their app is somewhat international or what but they include a link to confirm login rather than having to enter the number but it never works for me on several different Android device. I click on it and it opens the app and kills my login session so I then need to relogin. And this doesn't happen if I do the exact same process but enter the code so it isn't just that it's losing it when switching away from the app.

  • Just to note that if you do have a phone line and a printer/scanner, that device may have a built in fax, even if it is brand new. My brother printer/scanner did and it worked. Good to get a fax message after many years. We used to get heaps of fax spam.

  • Still working

  • From sending the fax, how long should it take to recieve back a voucher?

    • Between 10-15 minutes for me

  • Thanks @Wakrak! Lunch sorted for missus and I

  • Still working. Thanks team

  • got one today, thanks team

  • Tried doing this, received the voucher but when adding it to my app (with a success message) there's no option to redeem the burger in the Deals section.

Anyone able to comment on how long it would take to appear? I've done this on two accounts, same issue.

    • +1

It shows in the Deals section for me.
I have FREE Kiwiburger as the 4th deal option.
      Showed pretty much straight away.

    • I am experiencing the same issue!! Shows success message and then when I head over to deals there actually nothing there… I think your device might be banned. Have you been redeeming a lot?

      • Haven't had any issues. The tabs are a littlr confusing in the app but maybe that's me.

      • I tried on my iPhone and it worked with a different account. Perhaps I've been banned? It was my first time redeeming this promo although I do have dual apps on my phone so idk. I redeemed the hell out of the Fifa promo.

I guess maybe contact them? I'm using a xiaomi phone.

        • Since you have dual apps, did you redeem any on the other copy of the app?

          • +1

@NeverLucky: Well technically, I have a second space (basically running two instances of the operating system). So even though it's the same imei number from the phone, they can't talk to each other.

I did order multiple things when doing the Fifa promotion, but not this Kiwi Burger promotion.

            • @Latex Fist: I also have a Xiaomi. The second space has a different IEMI IIRC. No issues for me redeeming on 2 accounts, one in each space. The app is smart though, if you were to uninstall the app, reinstall in either half of the phone, it knows that IEMI has used a voucher even if it was signed into a different account.

              • +1

@2cheap: It's using Settings.Secure.ANDROID_ID from the android API to decide if it's a new device or not. Second user/space has a new number.

On other phones with multiuser capability you get the option to allow second user to view/send calls/SMS, this makes the IMEI visible to the second user. (Xiaomi has this setting disabled and can't turn it on)

                • @mikebb: @mikebb Hi Mike. Is there a work around for this on Huawei Mate 20 Pro?

                  • @jinxnz: You mean youve made a second user account but the McDonald's app is detectjng it as the same device? Or are you getting security check failed error? Unfortunately all I can think of is ensuring access to SMS etc is disabled in the multiuser settings.
