Temu.com has expanded their business into NZ

Not sure if you've heard of temu.com. It's another Aliexpress-style website which initially started in US and Canada with some success and now has landed in NZ and Australia. They offer Chinese-quality products at low prices and low shipping costs. Some may argue that it will create more landfills. But no doubt that people will start buying from them and they will surely make an impact on the local small business.

  • I've never heard of Temu.
How does it compare to AliExpress, Wish, DX, banggood and others?

    • Aliexpress shipping is gone up

banggood doesn't ship to nz anymore

      • good to know thanks!

      • +2

Banggood Does still ship to NZ. I don’t now where you got that info from. I purchased an item from them 3 weeks ago and it arrived very quickly. Just checked their website now and shipping to NZ is definitely available.

        • what was it? i browse ozb often and whenever there is a banggood sale, it doesn't ship to nz

          • +1

@justaddwater: Ozb has a banggood AU deals from their local warehouse I think which doesn't ship outside AU.

          • @justaddwater: It was this:
https://www.banggood.com/VIOLEWORKS-6-Inch-88VF-Electric-Cha… ( they are excellent saws btw ).

Purchased when it was on sale. Select “Ship from AU” and you’ll see it does ship to NZ

            • @lookingatewe: Interesting

              Shipping: NZD$12.59
To New Zealand Via NZ Standard Shipping, Estimated Delivery On Mar 25th-Apr 4th,2023
              Ships in 24 hours

Ive seen cordless bosch from amazon au. How mu h did you get it for?

This one seems to have more batteries and ?compatible with makita

              • @justaddwater: I paid $116 including shipping. As is always the way I have seen it cheaper since. If you want one of these keep an eye on Banggood, Aliexpress, Amazon au etc. Amszon au versions often come with a carry case.
Batteries are compatible with Makita 18v tools.

                • @lookingatewe: I need one to cut a tree trunk into smaller pieces

                  • @justaddwater: It would be fine for that if the trunk isn’t too big. Things to remember with these saws, they have a Euro charger so you need a travel adapter to use it safely in NZ. They do not auto oil so you need a small squeezy bottle with chain oil. Lube the chain every 10mins. and also check chain tension at the same time.

        • BangGood customer service is absolute trash. My friend and I bought something from them a while ago and both our products had defects and it took them 2 months to refund us $10 and $20 respectively. Their customer service can't compare to Aliexpress. I would recommend staying away from BangGood if possible.

Temu is backed by Pinduoduo, which is the largest competitor to Alibaba (Taobao/AliExpress) in China. In theory it would be larger than DX, Banggood, etc. It's also a marketplace similar to AliExpress.

I was telling my daughter about Temu launched in AU/NZ yesterday, and she said that she has already heard of the shop because it got featured by many influencers on Instagram and Tiktok.

      • Interesting. thanks!

    • Aliexpress charge an import GST at the checkout page, but I don't see this on Temu and shipping is cheaper too, so that's good.

    • got 30% off with fest572

      • thanks, that worked. Now waiting for order to arrive.

        • Arrived today, so 7 day. Very speedy and all correct.

  • The foam planes(38/50cm) are a good price considering you pay nothing for shipping, fun kids toy that take some damage without breaking easily.

I'm also surprised they think they can guarantee delivery by March 29th for my order(or give you $5 account credit) as nzpost is slow even for domestic right now.

  • My colleague says Temu is cheaper than Taobao in China but unsure if that's still the case here.

  • My friend told me about this. I put in an order for 60(-8 coupon), says delivery is a week

    • 60(-8 coupon)

      what does this mean?

      • $8 off with $60 spend from OzBargain link I mentioned earlier I’m guessing.

      • there are coupons you can get, I used the lowest one, $8 off $60

btw, you can get these when you sign up, I didnt enter promo codes

  • Tried to buy a smartphone case but their search engine is horrendous compared to Aliexpress. Sorry Temu but I've tried.

    • +1

same I tried to search for cables, every items I clicked to say out of stock and require login LOL. Bye

  • I think its shady they have the top banner about how free shipping/coupon ends at the end of the current day then reset the counter the next day..

Like on the 18th free shipping was to end midnight, then midnight 19th, now midnight 20th

The free shipping promo is actually good but I wish there was a real date attached to it

    • Yes I noticed that too.
It’s great to have free shipping but makes the site seem less credible the way they do it

      • Sounds like OnceIt.

        • Except Onceit make sure everything decent is excluded from the free shipping (or $1 shipping) offers.

  • Ordered 2 x Fitbit watch straps on 16th. Not shipped yet. Amazon.au it'd have landed in Nz by now. Will see how it goes.

  • Any good budget/mid range phone deals for kids? (Looking for something moddable)

  • So my order from March 14 is due tomorrow well ahead of the delivery deadline(or $5 credit applied).

My second order from March 18 has not been shipped yet

"Sorry! Due to high demand, shipments are taking longer than usual. We are working hard to ship the order to you as soon as possible. If it is not shipped within 5 days of purchase, we will issue you a NZ$5.00 credit. If the order is still not shipped within 15 days of purchase, we will issue you a full refund and still ship the item(s) to you as soon as possible."

    • My March 18 order shipped on day 6 and they gave me a $5 late credit. Was due to arrive on April 2nd(15 days) and is still in Auckland so they gave me a second $5 credit for being late without me asking for either credit.

$10 credit back from a $28 order, was 12 SKU's which is probably why it took so long

  • So I ordered 2 x Fitbit watch straps total cost $20. If I'd got those from TradeMe the cost would be about $40. From 'shops' the cost would been about $80. Delivery was quick and within the time frame.

    Next order was:

    1 pkt 5 CR2032 batteries $1.16 total - (Pkt 4 @ Local Supermarket $18)
2 x USB C Superfast charging 1.5m cables $1.88 each - (Guesstimate cost in Nz $15 each. Tested and they're not what I would call 'Fast Charge' cables but they're fine for cheap spares.)
    1 X Multimeter $7.18 - (the exact same device at Jaycar $14)
1x Blood Pressure Upper Arm Device $21.99 (Guesstimate cost in Nz $100)

    Total $34.09 Incl delivery.
Delivered in good time, (ordered 13th delivered 21st)

Perfectly happy with all the things I got. FAR cheaper than buying in Nz

  • Has anyone had any luck with their 'freebies' section? If you refer other users you get rewards essentially.
I tried with my partner and the referral was deamed fraudulent. Asked them about it and they said if they suspect it is not a real account, then you dont get the referral. Also only works for NZ based accounts. Gave me $30 credit anyway after my winge.

My first order has turned up. Under a week, Everything in one packet. Quite a surprise as I am used to aliexpress shipping times.

Got some bike tools (Pin wrench, bottom bracket wrench to suit unusual smaller dura-ace external bottom bracket size, chain cleaning device)

Very good value with free shipping (don't worry about the timer running out it resets every day).

Some stuff on there must be selling at a crazy loss, with the free shipping. i.e. a 15 inch foam glider plane for $2.18

    • also in for some bike tools, are you looking at anything else?

      • Also got tubeless injector kit, fork sercing spanner, chain strech checker (sadly 0 75% and 1%. Would have rather one with 0 5%), chain stay protector.

Plus some other stuff, like a pool toys for my child.

  • Also placed my first order on Tuesday, will keep you updated when delivered.

    • Ordered on the 25 April and delivered on 3 May = 7/8 days.

  • Placed an order on the 26th. Showed it was shipped on the 27th with a NZ Post tracking number tho its not live yet which is annoying. But said to he delivered between 4th and 9th May

    • It's likely they fly them over in bulk and then ship from Auckland and that's the number from Auckland. Mine is the same, item is shipped but no updates, although it's estimated as 4th - 7th, so not sure what the difference is.

    • Go to Temu and click track order and you can see internal updates on it, same issue here for parcel sent 24th and no nzpost tracking working(other than assigned to parcel) but plenty of updates on temu site.

      • Note that the nzpost ticket can be created at any time and essentially be sitting there doing nothing in temu's warehouse.
Until the items arrive in nz and picked up by a courier, there will be no update on nzpost systems until then.

        • In that instance yes, I've had 2 packages last month from temu which tracked from from china fine va nzpost at every stage

          • @Dunno: I guess it depends if you track the international ticket or the local ticket in that case

  • I've received 4 or 5 packages from Temu now and I find shipping relatively fast. I've also received a $5.00 credit and that was for a free item I won that they couldn't ship because of shipping restrictions (non removable batteries) so they also refunded me $32 for the free item as well.
I've been happy with the items I've received, especially my 100% free 4k dash cam, it's just like the ones supercheap auto have and picture quality is crisp!
Ive bought awesome personalised products like a basketball for my Grandson and a massive size blanket for my granddaughter.

I've considered all the articles ie Time magazine, Forbes, BBB, and the talk of spyware etc (don't see people rushing to delete tic toc 🤔) and I've decided to utilise the app for now.
$2000 in free stuff and counting.
I've sorted heaps of gifts, some very unusual (like the vanishing shorts that dissolve in water, I won't be popular with hubby next summer 😅🙈🤷🏼‍♀️) I also scored school supplies that I wouldn't find cheaper in NZ. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I can see why so many kiwis will eventually end up on this app!

I am empathetic for alot of the other sites advertised on here, many I have followed for years. I've thought about them and what an app like Temu may do. 😢 I really hope they can run with it and utilise it a way that benefits them. 😊

  • Is there buy 4 items get 6 free promo worth it?

    • It was for me! I found the first item you pick is free no matter what so choose an expensive item first! If it gives you the dearer items to pay for I just remove the next dearest item and add something cheap and it reshuffles the order. I then got alot of the dearer items free. Hope that helps.

      • How can you see or get the “buy 4 items get 6 items free”?

        • For my 2 fresh new accounts you have 48hrs to choose 10 get 6 free items in the promotions part in your account. after the 48hrs from creating account the offer vanishes so if you want to take up that offer of buy 10 get 6 free then just create another account under new email or phone number.

  • I’ve ordered a laptop bag with the fest572 discount code. Will report if it arrives on time :)

    • +1

This arrived today and the quality is excellent, I’m impressed so far.

  • What do people use as payment? Their credit card or paypal or something else??
(PM me for referral if you need one)

    • Wise Card

      • Any advantages of Wise? I'd figure Dosh would be better coz of the 1% back

        • Dosh is good if paying in nzd. Wise for international payments

          • @ace310: Why is Dosh not good for non NZD - are their implicit fees / spread more costly?

            • @Alan6984: Can't remember but once the payment got declined and once I checked with wise after making payment in AUD and wise was cheaper. Don't recall about the fees though.

              • @ace310: I really meant the overall costs of conversion - it doesn't really matter how they are made up (to me at least), just the overall costs.

However, getting declined using Dosh is a deal-breaker anyway :-)

    • I used After pay so Temu didn't get my bank details. 😊

      • same i use afterpay and my afterpay is hooked up to wise card

        • If you are using a Wise virtual card, there is essential no risk anyway - kill the card immediately after using it if you want to be sure?

          • @Alan6984: tbh i dont even care if i use my credit cards on temu, i just use afterpay to build up my afterpay membership and points and forgot wise was hooked upto my afterpay.

  • Don't know Dosh, so cant comment.

  • Plenty of vouchers online, but just used voucher code: just493 for an extra 30% off my order. Didnt seem to have any limitations

    • +2

says only for new users for me on an existing account

  • I'm not sure how many of you are aware of their Android app scandal, but I highly recommend using their web version exclusively. Although their app may offer more promotions or benefits.

  • They have something on the site about a 100% value coupon after your next order, wtf does that mean lol. So scammy how its not even clear what you get in return

    • +1

Not sure if you got an answer to this, but it's scummy as, you get something like a $5 off 20, $15 off $50, $30 off $100, etc. coupons. I ordered to see what they actually meant and then just ended up cancelling a bunch of items from the first order and reordering them with the coupon.

  • New to temu and noticed that inviter can get a free gift once I accept. Will there be any credit/offers for new users once accepted that invite?

  • just bought an item off there last week for 21.11nzd because of the 30% off coupon i got for new members

it should be arriving today ordered it last Tuesday

just sucks they have hardly anything i want or is worth buying compared to aliexpress

    coupon code is lucky365

    • I couldn't find anything I wanted and few things looked much cheaper on Aliexpress. Maybe it's just me.

      • +1

They sell alot of the same stuff as aliexpress, all the things i got i found on ali express for same price or a bit more.
So best to look at both places and see where you can get a bargin
