I need a new laptop to replace my old surface book.

What I need is:

  1. more than 6 CPU core, real ones, not intel's sh*tty small core, so AMD is the only option(5700/5800/5900, 6800 etc)
  2. min 16GB ram
  3. the bigger screen the better (resolution is not that important, GPU is not that important)
  4. the thinner the better
  5. a touch screen will be nice
  6. large battery
  7. Good brand
  8. cheap, less than NZ$1500 :-P

After a few days looking around, there is nothing in NZ could meet my requirements. The best option is Acer's new Swift Edge but I can't find a seller that deliver to NZ and no friend is returning from China can bring me one. To have a better customer service, I narrowed down few models from first-party Amazon US (few on Amazon AU too, but AU has a very limited range and more expansive than directly buy from US) that ship to NZ:

Brand Model Size CPU GPU RAM SSD Touch Battery Thickness Weight RRP Now
LG UltraPC 16U70Q 16 5825u On-board 16 non-upgradable 512GB no 72Wh 16.3mm 1.65kg US$999.99 US$699
Asus ROG Flow X13 13.4 5900h GTX1650 4gb 16 non-upgradable 1TB Yes 62Wh 15.8mm 1.30kg US$1359.99 US$999.5
Asus Vivobook Pro 15 OLED 15.6 6800h GTX3050 4gb 16 non-upgradable 512GB no 70Wh 19.9mm 1.80kg US$1139.14 US$1139.14
Asus Vivobook Pro 15 OLED 15.6 6800h GTX3050Ti 4gb 16 non-upgradable 1TB no 70Wh 19.9mm 1.80kg US$1299.99 US$1299.99
Asus Vivobook 15X 15.6 5800h On-board 16 upgradable 512GB no 70Wh 19.9mm 1.70kg US$899.99 US$899.99
Asus Zenbook 14 14 5800h On-board 16 non-upgradable 512GB no 62Wh 16.8mm 1.30kg US$999.99 US$999.99

The shipping+GST for above models is around US$160~US$200. I was waiting for anyone of them has a decent price drop and the LG just dropped to historical low at US$699 so I pulled the trigger. It will serve me good for a few years until I need more power :-)

i recently got the asus tuf gaming laptop for my daughter, i7 16gb 3050ti, 512gb ssd for $1699 at jb hifi and its better than my pc :(

    • There are quite few newest 6800/6900 CPU TUF in NZ but 3cm thick is too much for me :-(

  • Nice research, I bought my last laptop from Asus US amazon site and got a friend to deliver it in 2015, they have way more choices than us, thanks for this.

  • "Lightweight" in this case turns out to be 2.5kg, which is heavier than 80% of laptops on the market. Laptops half this weight are usually referred to as lightweight.

    • "Weighing only 3.7lbs with a thin body" - that would be about 1.7kg

    • I have updated the table with weight. The LG is a 16" so it won't as light as the small ones.

Not all screens are created equal so it's hard not seeing it hands on before buying for me, I have ~$500USD in gift cards waiting to be used so looking for a laptop too.

Theres also plenty of renewed/refreshed/refurbished laptops on amazon with good pricing and high specs in the price range you are looking at.

I would check out the review at:
    https://www.notebookcheck.net/LG-Ultra-PC-16-2022-AMD-review…

    • I checked the review (every review of the models in that table) also few Youtube videos showing the laptop in action (in Korean though, so not too sure what the reviewer is talking about, but they do seem have a happy face :-D ), seems pretty decent.

I will be very careful with the refurbished laptop from 3rd party sellers on Amazon, few of them has 1-star reviews due to the laptop failed shortly. You never know which component they replaced and if the replaced component is reliable.

  • Any import over $1000nzd requires customs fees to be paid so you might want to add another $200 to the price (roughly)

    • iirc thats why shipping is ~$150 rather than the usual $30-40 for a laptop via amazon. It's prepaid so it's not held up for weeks to arrange payment.

    • As Dunno said, anything you bought from Amazon is the final price including customs fees. Courier might contact you asking for a customs client code, it is a very easy step to fill the form and email back to the courier. The client code can be used for any future purchases.

  • Looks like the price has gone up.
