Panasonic TH-55JZ980Z 4k OLED TV $2299 + Shipping or Pickup @ Harvey Norman

60

Seems a good deal for a TV capable of 4K 120Hz with freesync for those wanting a better TV to show off their new consoles. JB hi-fi might price match but they still have it down as $4000.

Full product page on the Panasonic site confirming it can do 4k 120:

Edit: also found Panasonic are offering 12 months spark sport with TV purchase via redemption

  • Does Panasonic make decent software? Only used Sony and Samsung.

    • I've owned 2 panasonic tv's LEDLCD GX880 and OLED JZ1000.

The OS is decent can't say any cons, has all the usual apps (youtube, netflix, amazon prime, media viewer etc) but it did take them until last year before they finally released Disney+ app.

However I've never owned a samsung or sony smart tv so can't comment how they compare in terms of software.

      • Samsung UI is fairly quick even for a cheaper TU series one.
Sony quite slow even being a high tier one with Android

        • Samsung UI I find a bit confusing at times. It's quite well capable but I find it something you have to grow to like.

The Sony UI can be made to be much more simpler, but it can be slower and I find needs a restart every once in a while.
Tends to get upgraded moving with the times more, whilst it's still in that support window.

I thought originally I'd be able to load on android tablet apps etc, essentially bringing a lot of apps to the TV, but most of the store is blocked because the TV doesn't present as having a required touch screen for example, so it's more limited and you end up having to side load something in that instance.

Does have huge support for Apps though over say Samsung and Panasonic.

Just an FYI, Plex app has been removed from panasonic. As a panasonic OLED TV owner and a Plex user, I miss this app. They also do not have a native Spotify app, which is not a big deal but most other vendors offer it.

        • Thanks for that info about Plex. I assumed it was because my Panasonic TV model wasn't being supported any more as it was about 4 years old now. This was one of my most used apps so I guess I won't consider a Panasonic going forward at the moment.

@pdkm: See the bottom of this article. I too, unfortunately wont be choosing panasonic in the future.

  • If you're not into gaming, if you're just going to be using your tv to watch movies so you don't need hdmi 2.1 or variable refresh rate then check out this Panasonic OLED https://www.jbhifi.co.nz/panasonic/panasonic-th-55hz1000-55-…

This tv was nearly $4000 just over a year ago, now it's under $2200. It's specifically designed for watching movies and if you go and read some of the reviews for it you'll find they're all stellar with only very minor gripes.

    • As a PC gamer this makes me sad. Why are OLED TV 55 inches 2k and there is no monitor for this price for half the size?

      • +1

You can google, but the TLDR is because they haven't (yet) managed to sort out the burn-in issues.

        • This, OLED is excellent for the night viewing movie side of things, but if you're not watching in pitch black darkness there are other options that perhaps are more suited to daytime/gaming viewing etc

      • 55 inch monitor it is. You can just override the output resolution to only show a 2K signal on a portion of the monitor and as the pixels not on will stay black it'll look pretty decent. Linus tech tips did a video doing this with an aorus to make a 4k monitor in to an ultrawid.

  • I wanted the C1 but it was a lot more than comparable OLEDS (i.e. a80J) I got an A80J for $2.4k on boxing day - it only has 2x2.1 HDMI ports (so kind of future proof as it has 2.1 ports) but one is an eARC. I have both next gen consoles and a sound bar so its very much a first world problem having to reconnect the cables. Also it doesn't have VRR at the moment but promises it is coming..promised end of Dec21, then end of Jan21 and now when the next lot of OLED Sony Tvs are out in April i think. Supposedly classic Sony move but i have not noticed the lack of VRR in my games). In terms of gaming i typically play halo, fifa or forza. All of them look amazing at 4K120FPS. But all the games i play ALWAYS have static content on the screen, and my gaming sessions can be up to 4 hours at one time, so i've just ended up buying a dedicated gaming monitor (S3422DWG - got this for $600 NZD shipped but it took ages. I also use this for Work - 20 excel columns and 30 rows on one screen? yes please). In terms of PQ (see rtings.com) the Sony beats both LG C1 straight out of the box i.e. no calibration. I don't think rtings have reviewed the Panasonic because i can't find it? Eitherway i'd recommend an a80j at $2.4k (when it comes back to this) and if you game just get a gaming monitor.

    • Best review I could find was HDTV test on YouTube that a lot of guys on forums swear by his content. They reviewed the 48inch model and seemed to say this was a decent model that there were surprised it could do 4k 120 with it's hardware set up. Apparently Panasonic found a way to do it in the mediatek chip that Sony haven't been able to replicate. Also said Panasonic have a track record of releasing updates lime that and Sony seem to take years to copy them.

  • Quite a good deal, but the 55" LG C1 went down to $2,331 on Black Friday and it may well get discounted again soon now the C2 has been launched.

  • I got the 65 inch JZ1000 OLED. Hands down Panasonic has probably the best colour accuracy out of the box and overall some of the best colour grading compared to all the other OLEDS.

If you love watching dolby vision, Hdr, Hdr 10 plus and other hdr formats, then Panasonic is a must have. If you love TV shows or Movies in very high quality get this tv.

    • RTings put the sony a80j/a80j as best out of the box colour accuracy. Unfortunately USA don't sell panasonic OLEDS so Rtings don't review them. Do you know of a reviewer who has reviewed both? keen to compare.

      • HDTV test has reviewed the JZ series and a few others.

Rtings put sony as best because you answered your own question. They havent reviewed Panasonics.

  • Been considering a new TV, Anyone know if LG or Panasonic have a equivalent to Samsung soundshare?
Essentially like the idea that turning the TV on will also turn on the sound bar, mute itself and volume control works like usual.

    • If you connect to the sound bar using hdmi using the earc enabled port that should be fine. My LG does it with a Yamaha amp, I have other problems with it that are caused by LGs software but arc is a standard and worms across brands.

      • Does it have more than one ARC port?, at the moment have my soundbar via soundshare and my reciever via ARC. Only use the amp with movies as it tends to wake the little one

Spec sheet says only on hdmi input 2. Most TVs aren't really geared up to do two sound outputs like that as it's a very niche feature. Could use Bluetooth potentially to achieve similar results if you aren't after full surround sound from the sound bar.

        • Have you tried using a smart remote (e.g. Logitech Harmony)? With a button press, you can program it to do a sequence of commands (e.g. turn on/off an appliance, change input source, etc).

You can even program the volume buttons to control your soundbar and the number buttons to control your TV or decoder without the need for eArc for example.

Some supports bluetooth and infrared remotes as well. The other bonus is that its receiver is RF based so you don’t need to ‘point’ the remote.
