Panasonic SR-DF101WST Rice / Multi Cooker $61 (Was $102.35) 1L Capacity / 6 Cups @ PB Tech

180

This is the cheapest price I've seen for the 6 cup model.
It has some good reviews, and might be a good option for anyone looking for a cheap, "smart" fuzzy logic rice cooker.

You can see all the specs on the Panasonic site

Having consistent rice without effort is amazing. Rice is also cheap and plentiful costing only ~20c per serving (1 cup) cooked!

I have this and used as our secondary rice cooker , primary being the tiger once from Japan , this once is set up for our Airbnb guest and we also use it some times and is a fantastic rice cooker and very easy to use , please note Japanese rice cooker takes longer to cook perfect rice then your 20 nzd rice cooker from Kmart

Using one for the past 3-4 years, basic model but it is good enough.

  • Which appliance store has the fastest turn around for local pickup? Noel Leeming / JB-Hifi / Harvey / Briscoes ?
I need to buy electric hair clippers, my wife left me with half a haircut :-P

Sounds like you are one wife short of a hairem

  • Whats the difference between this and something like Noel Leeming have for $45?

that one is bigger and it would be easier to clean. I've had that rice cooker before, or a very similar one. It was fine for larger sizes (4+ cups of cooked rice), but not good if you want to make 2 person worth of rice.

basically OP's one is digital has more features/modes etc.
Its also the cheapest price its ever been since being released where your one has been done to $25 before.

      • yeah there doesn't seem to be many sales at the moment, I was just interested in why you would buy more than a cheap basic one, although the reviews do look good.

        • +1

my cheap one sputters water out the steam hole thing, and a review on pbtech said this one doesn't. that sold me

          • @quote: they call that a "water feature", its fancy.

    • The Panasonic is an electric vacuum-flask type rice cooker. The Breville is basically an electric pot that you plug in, which to be fair is just a more modest version of the rice cooker.

      • I don't think the panasonic is a vacuum flask thermos. If anything rice cookers cook under increased pressure, opposite to a vacuum. You can cook rice in a vacuum thermos, bascically you boil the water and then let it sit.

  • Btw you can cook your whole chicken in this rice cooker 🤙

Not trying to be a smart arse here, just genuinely curious… I cook rice at least once a week using a simple absorption method of 1.5 cups of water to every one cup of rice, bring to boil, cover, reduce to lowest temp, cook for 12 minutes (Alexa timer), turn off heat, leave covered for a further 8 minutes (Alexa again), fluff with fork and serve. Is a rice cooker going to provide significant convenience benefits over this method to warrant paying $70ish bucks for? Coz I’m all for it if it’s a game changer (like robovacs are…) but I just feel this is a gimmick?

There are some high pressure cooker rice cookers that would give an advantage over your pot on the stove … but otherwise it's just an automation of your process above and lower risk of burning the rice because you don't hear the timer or forget to start one.

It just makes cooking rice alot more convenient with excellent results. All Asian people own a rice cooker, so it's no gimmick :)

And more specifically almost every Chinese tourist to Japan buys a Japanese rice cooker to take home. The fuzzy logic Japanese rice cookers make the best rice. I used to think absorption method on the stove was fine. But once you’ve had a good rice cooker like this you will never go back.

I got tired just reading those instructions! So YES its way more convenient. But seriously i would think a rice cooker would be useful to a lot of people. For comparision my churro maker gift is still in its box after 12 months.
