If it makes you feel better, mine got cancelled and got the below mail

    Hello,

Thanks for writing back with the e-mail address associated with your account.

I understand your concern that you're unable to find the order #113-7767733-4568253 on your account.

I've checked and see the order has already been canceled.

I see an incorrect price was displayed for the item when you placed your order. At any given time, despite our best efforts, a few of the millions of items on our site may be mis-priced. We do, however, verify prices as part of our shipping procedures. That's the reason the order was canceled.

I'm taking this as a feedback. Customer concern like yours is very important in helping us continue to improve our website and services.

As a consumer buying something that is on offer from a store (online or not), surely they have to honour the advertised price at the time of purchace?? I have no idea what kind of CGA enforcement there is across countries. As a compromise, Amazon could have also just only sent out half the quantity of ordered drives by one individual.

Apparently, if it was ordered to China then they have to honour it. Depends on the country I guess.
I bit the bullet and purchased an 8TB, cost $200 using the $20 gift.

        • Hmm, interesting. Maybe those were the few who got it shipped but yeah, I dont know anyone personally, just heard from the other forums. I guess that's not too bad for a 8TB, I paid $270 for the 10TB that was last on special.

Unlike some other countries, NZ doesn't really cover companies located outside NZ or dealing with companies outside NZ much unless the companies/contract specify it. That's one advantage of buying local, you get CGA etc protections although NZ retailers aren't helping themselves by their frequent poor compliance.

But in any case, NZ law allows for genuine mistakes provided due care etc is taken. See e.g. this famous case https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/73930112/ but this sort of thing happens fairly often e.g. another one https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/108808755/nood-apologises-f…

And I recall at least 2 price errors posted here from local retailers recently. One was a USB SSD at DragonPCs and some other retailers another an Asus wifi adapter from various retailers including Ascent.

        • I see, reading that Harvey Norman article as well there are few things like:

          1. the company did not financially gain from the conduct, nor did it cause harm to its competitors; and
          2. and although consumers could not buy the products at the prices advertised, and may have been inconvenienced, there was unlikely to have been any direct financial loss to consumers.

which you wouldnt really have a leg to stand on.

Also LOL @ whoever down voted my original question/suggestion.

  • Looking around other sites, I've confirmed people who ordered the 4TB portable also had their orders cancelled. And it seems even people who ordered the 8TB at $105 were informed it was a mistake although some got offered to get one shipped anyway (only 1). So we have at least 4 pricing errors the 16TB (internally 2x8TB), the 4TB portable, this 10TB and the 8TB. I wonder what happened? People keep suggesting that Amazon simply typoed this deal as $79 instead of $179 but that doesn't explain the other errors.

  • Yup, order cancelled yesterday for me too with a $20 gift card.
