  • It is a rip-off. After Christmas you should be able to find cherries in supermarkets for around $15/kg in Auckland and they will be far cheaper than that in Hawks Bay and places where they actually grow them…

Not exactly a fair comparison - its probably a reasonable price for Cherries before Christmas. Sure after Christmas (ie once demand has dropped off) yeah sure the price comes down, and sure when you go to the source then yeah it makes sense the price comes down. But for those who want/need them before Christmas and are unable to get to the source, that price is a reasonable deal.

??? They are literally charging you a premium because it is Christmas. I think it is fair to point out that is not a bargain.

You can say the same thing about anything that's seasonal - e.g. Christmas decorations - they are charging you a premium because it's before Christmas. Or Halloween costumes. Or Easter Eggs. Or tomatoes in the winter when you know they will be cheaper in the summer.

Most cherry types in NZ reach full maturity after Christmas around January, that's the best time to get them.

  • It's probably a deal if you need to buy NOW and this is the lowest price NOW. But I personally won't be buying NOW. I think cherries are the best when they cost around $10-$12/kg, towards the end of the season. Like when they are $10/kg this week, and be totally gone next week. :)
