  • Damn, that's pre COVID 2019 prices. I used to pay $180 for 3 x 2kg from Greenlea Butcher(online).

    • I used to buy them for $20KG pre-covid. $30 is pretty good nowadays

This is available at all New Worlds in the North Island 22nd, 23rd, 24th December only.

      Thanks. I'll update the title.

    • Yep - I just picked one up from Wellington Central. New Zealand beef as opposed to Pak'nSave specials, and they had quite a few in stock.

    What's the quality?

Picked up one, it was a Silver Fern Farms packaging though all stores are likely different. Very nice quality

      • My store had afco and silver fern

Hi do you prepare these? Cut a bunch of steaks cross wise down the length. Can they be frozen without impacting quality much etc?

    • +4

I do this: Cut out all the visible silverskin. Portion them out to nice and thick steaks - about 2/3 finger widths, wrap each piece in glad wrap and then put them in zip lock bags (or vacuum seal each piece) so it’s easy to take out and defrost. Never had any issues with quality doing this.

      • Perfect, thanks.

Tbone steak $25 kg @ packnsave papanui. Tbone is eye filit on one side and porterhouse ( serloin, New York steak) on the other.

    • +2

But you're also paying for the weight of the bone

      • +3

Did some science tonight. 776g raw T-bone 102g bones left over. So 13% bones. Doing the math, it works out at $28.74 per kg of steak.

  • how big are these? how many kgs approx?

    • +2

Probably depends on the store. A whole one would be around 3.5-4.5kg. The ones in the video look like halves of that. So you could get a half at around 2kg or a whole at around 4kg.

New World Whanganui has photos of whole and half.

    • Just grabbed 2 in Rototuna, about 4,5kg of NZ fresh beef, absolutely beautiful after portioning into steaks, about 250g, perfect for the grill.
They had whole pieces and trays of thirds.
PS: If you're freezing any, give 'em a vacuum seal, they’ll stay heaps better that way.

Whole Brisket is $14.90/kg at woolworths at the moment. 35 mins in the pressure cooker after browning and it's beeeaaauuuutiful. Tender and the fat is perfectly rendered.

    • That’s a niiice deal

    • Dammit, none in Chch. Maybe also just a NI deal.

    • not in stock anywhere, would have been a great deal

      • Seems to be in Henderson :)

        noms in brisket

It's $17/kg for sliced brisket in a lot of woolworths in NI

        • Henderson is too far from where i am, plan to make Texas Style Smoked Beef Brisket, will need the whole piece :-)

  • New World Mt Roskill have limited it to 1 per person today

  • Thanks OP - Picked up two x 5.2kg from NW Mt Roskill

  • Bought a 1.3kg piece since lacking fridge space. Beautiful piece of meat, soft and delicious

  • Thanks. Chopped up into 1kg chunks, vacuum packed and in the freezer. Will keep us sorted for a few months.

  • Lamb leg 40% off too in WW
