  • I would have bought these if I haven't already purchased a pack of the regular 9v ones.

  • What makes this superior to other cheaper smoke alarms that it's worth the higher price?

    • just the fact that you don't have to change the battery yearly. which actually makes it cheaper and also less hassle

      • You can't change the battery at all as it's sealed. So after 10 years (if it lasts 10 years that is) you will have to buy a new one instead of replacing the battery.

        • You have to buy a new one after 10 years with the 9 volt versions too, as they recommend replacing after 10 years as they wear out.

        • @nzmax: Hmm never seen this recommendation on the user manual, I assume as long as it beeps when testing it should be ok?

        • @Zyo:

The fire Dept recommends it, as does this website. https://www.nfpa.org/News-and-Research/News-and-media/Press-… If you google it, 10 years appears. Also as they are a safety product, so you don't want somethings that may have lost it's effectiveness, especially as they are so cheap.

    • Photoelectric smoke alarms are now a lot cheaper to produce due to LED technology, and the LED's low power consumption means that a small lithium battery can now produce 10 years of service. Which is good because 9V batteries are relatively expensive.

      • I forgot to add that by law all new smoke alarms for rental properties must now have at least 8 years battery life. So that also explains why they're more common now.

        • Never knew!

        • In Asia people don't use smoke alarms at all which I feel is very silly and worrying. Gonna buy a few of these for my dad and in lawx

  • Mitre 10 had them for $14 yesterday, but have reduced them to $9 today, maybe after someone tried to price match.

  • Purchased one this morning , a nice surprise only $8.

    • Interesting that they dropped the price, maybe they did it to beat mitre 10 who had dropped the price to match them. Mitre 10 are also advertising them for $9 on their websites homepage so looks to be a promotion. What does you date stamp say, as mine says 2015.

  • I purchased a number of them today from Mitre 10. However upon opening it at home, I noticed the date sticker on the back said they were manufactured in 2015 March! So they are essentially over 3 years old, and according to this website below, smoke detects should be replaced 10 years from manufacturer. So have I only only got 6 years, and 11 months of use out of something that is advertised to last 10 years? Or should it last another 10 years from installation? Maybe they were cheaper because they are old stock as 2015 is a long time to be sitting on the shelves? https://www.nfpa.org/News-and-Research/News-and-media/Press-…

  • Yes March 2015 , so i would think 7 years to go . Still good value considering not having to purchase replacement 9v batteries . The $8 price was at bunnings Porirua .

    • Yeah they are still cheap. But it is like buying 200grams of a chocolate egg, only to find someone has eaten 30% of it, and you are only getting 140 grams. Also you can't use in a rental if it has less than 8 years remaining. The instructions though are vague, as it says it recommends replacing smoke alarms 10 years after the manufacture date. But it also says the time starts from when it is installed. Guess if we keep the receipt if it fails. Amazon reviews though aren't great for it, with some people reporting batteries failing fairly early on into their life.

  • Now reduced to $8
