Not sure if this counts as a deal but people might find this useful in saving some money:

Billy (billy.govt.nz) is a free, impartial power‑comparison and switching website run by the Electricity Authority. It lists all participating NZ electricity retailers, renewable‑energy options, and plan details so you can compare prices and contracts in one place. Billy is designed to help you find a better deal and switch easily, without paying a middleman or subscription fee.

Always worth checking around, I got an amazing deal a few years back from Powerswitch.

  • +3

Anyone got any feedback regarding supa.energy?

    • +1

I've signed up to switch to them, willing to live my life on the edge and take a risk.

      • +1

Update: so far they responded quickly via email; switch occurred painlessly. No online portal or app to check usage though, although they are working on it. Was about 8% cheaper than my existing plan. Let's see how they go.

Supa and Mercury are shown as the cheapest in my area. Powershop doesn’t appear to be listed as a retailer (likely because it’s difficult to compare).

    • i have gas so mercury has been the best for the last decade. if you know the price per kw, you can ask a retailer if they can beat it.

    • What area are you in? I'm SE Auckland and Mercury has been cheapest from what I can tell (daytime and night time rates (incl 20% discount for EV 9pm-7am 7days)

Nothing is cheaper currently for me. Everything is atleast $25+ higher than what I am paying with Genesis.

    • Genesis is the cheapest for me too . Contact is almost the same I see Billy has already accounted for:
$10 monthly credit when you combine electricity and natural gas . Last bill was $10 more than Billy
      Cob
When was the last time you switched? I have been with Genesis for a few years now, They work out the cheapest for me and I ask for a cashback for 12 months. I might switch to contact when I get the new bill after the hike below

But just received tis in the email
      We’re simplifying your plan

On 2 April 2026, you’ll move from your current electricity and natural gas plans to our new PowerHome plan.**

      What this means for you:

      ● Simplified pricing – no discounts or fixed terms; what you see is what you pay.

      ● Clear plans – easy to compare across providers.

      ● New admin fee – for receiving paper bills.

      ● Same service – no change to how your energy is supported.

If you’re eligible for Power Shout, nothing changes – you’ll keep earning hours and your current balance won’t be affected.
      Introducing our Home Bundle Reward

With PowerHome, if you have both electricity and natural gas with us, you’ll receive a $10 monthly Home Bundle Reward credit.

The credit is applied automatically, so there’s nothing you need to do. You’ll see it in Energy IQ or on your next bill.

Full PowerHome terms and conditions, including for the Home Bundle Reward, are available here.
      Your prices are changing too

As part of the move to the new plan, your rates will also change from 2 April 2026. We understand price changes aren't easy, and we want to be upfront about why this is happening.

  • Good timing, thanks for sharing!

  • Sadly it shows no saving on every option - no matter how I cut it. Individually or bundling or whatever. That's depressing.

Upload a bill or estimate your power usage. Why can't I just put in how many KW/hr a month I use.

    • +1

I agree it's annoying, though looks like you can enter that info.
Once you submit your address etc. and it shows you the companies, there's a button by your address info to "Add Usage".

    • +1

if you go through the "estimate my power use" path, it has a button under your ICP details for "add usage". You can enter your usage in kWh over a custom period.

  • +1

Generally speaking, usually always cheaper to chop and change utility providers every contract term.
    Electricity and telco
This is because companies have much more budget for new customers as opposed to retention

  • Cool now can someone do one for car insurance please??

I was curious and went through getting quotes from this… Wow this is a rip-off, I'm getting quoted almost double the amount I pay now via trademe insurance

  • Am I restarted when looking at these price comparison websites, because I always get recommended electric Kiwi, but when I go to octopus energys website itself, it always has a cheaper price rate. These websites push octopus way down the list, yet going on the websites and checking them out themselves, it doesn't look cheaper unless I play their gimmicks (eg powershop).

    • I believe these comparison websites have either biases and/or paid to promote. I've also noticed some companies not on comparison websites that actually have a better deal.

if Billy is a govert website, it should be netural. right?

          Yep.

@Blue: I believe these comparison websites have either biases and/or paid to promote. I've also noticed some companies not on comparison websites that actually have a better deal.

Consumer are likely preeved about the government no longer subsidising their PowerSwitch site, and might therefore claim that the government is a shareholder in some power companies, and are therefore biased.

However, it would probably be in a fit of pique, rather than any kind of reality, and you shouldn't let anyone try to deflect you from the conspiracy that is always at the heart of, well, everything I guess :-)

          • @Alan6984: Consumer were charging $50/user who signed up to a new plan, for companies to be on PowerSwitch. Some of the retailers baulked at that so weren't on it. Billy should hopefully be truly independent.

              You got it :-)

Sometimes power companies ask to not be included. I know Electric Kiwi did for quite a while on power switch. Because according to them they didn't want new customers. In a rare bit of morality. They decided to keep their prices low for existing loyal customers rather than take on more.

I've never heard of Supa but seems to be the cheapest in my area (Wellington).

    • I got the same with Mercury being the 2nd best.

I won't be swapping to Supa, looks kinda dodgy.

I would like to see it provide solar buy back rates as well. I don't have solar at the moment but considering it so being able to compare buy back rates would be beneficial.
Their FAQ says "Billy works for solar power if your connection details show your property is able to generate solar. Solar power will be included in your estimates whether you upload a bill or enter your details manually."

Not very helpful if the ICP is not configured for solar yet!

  • Seems like im already on the cheapest option, good to know.

So I just found a power bill from back in 2022, and being a low user the daily fixed charge has increased from 60c/day back in June 2022 to $1.50/day in 2026, a 150% increase, and while back in 2022 I was paying 21.63c per unit of power (excluding GST), I'm now paying 25.85c, an increase of 19.5% in less than 4 years.

To put that into perspective, if we use 300 units over 30 days, which is our average energy consumption, our bill is now around 47% higher than it was less than 4 years ago.

Pretty awesome stuff, for the power company and its shareholders.

  • A good option is to upload your last few months of data into chatgpt, throw it a couple of pricing plans from the top ones and see how it compares your actual data.

I was on EK Movemaster but moving to the plan Go250 will save me some money
Also gets free sunday's for a year

  • I apparently save $2 going with Supa. I'm already on the cheapest it seems (Octopus Energy, long time user with special rates apparently).

  • Offer $70 more per month, then my current Meridian plan

Remember for Auckland (Vector) line/network charges increase on 1st April, so bear this in mind when comparing.
