In September 2014, a star ChoiceCheapies was born. Through the relentless efforts of the Administrators, Moderators, and (most importantly) the users, this community has grown into what it is today. As seen below:

https://files.cheapies.nz/upload/4/1037/sept-aug.png

To celebrate this we are running a competition, that, for once, doesn't require any creative skill! This is open to everyone, and the flexibility of the rules should give a huge variety of different entries. The competition is called 'The Cheapies Country', it's our 2nd birthday competition, and it's pretty simple. Each user can submit unlimited photos, and the photos are scored according to their contents. The points system and rules are outlined below. Please do not endanger yourselves or anyone else trying to get an amazing picture, it's just not worth it.

Rules:

  • The photos are to be of a Cheapie in the wild. A Cheapie must be identified with either a ChoiceCheapies T-shirt (if you have one), or a Cheapie Face sign (This may also be displayed on a mobile device/tablet, or written by hand on paper).
  • Each user is allowed to submit unlimited entries, the final score will be that of the total sum of the top 3 entries submitted by that user.
  • Score for each photo will be judged on creativity, originality, photo quality, as well as bonus points from the list below. (Please add your own bonus points when submitting).
  • No image editing whatsoever (This is a blanket rule to make judging easier, this includes cropping etc. If you aren't happy with the photo, take more).
  • Photos only. No videos, drawings, etc.
  • Competition ends September 28th.
  • Please do not endanger yourself or others during photo capturing.
  • Submit your entry images uploaded to a publicly accessible file sharing service or the ChoiceCheapies upload system, which can be found under My Account -> Files at the top of the page.
  • Competition entry photos must be taken within NZ.

Points:

  • Total score = Sum of scores of entries for each user.
  • Entry score = Base points (0-10) + Bonus points
  • Base points are determined by the originality, creativity, photo quality, etc.

Bonus Points:

  • Bonus points are scored when you include one or more of these features in your photo.
  • Each bonus point (denoted by a letter) can be claimed only once per entry. (e.g. Max score from popular product, denoted by A is +5)
  • Each entry is permitted to claim a bonus point for each letter.
  • When any +5 point item or location has been claimed, no one else will be able to claim the bonus using that item. E.G. If someone claims an Eneloop or the Sky Tower for their entry, no one else will be able to use these for their entry.
  • The famous person needs to be them in real life. No cut outs, posters, impersonators, or people with the same name.

B) Eating in a fast food restaurant (e.g. KFC, Burger King, McDonald's)

K) With the current or a former Prime Minister of New Zealand.
L) With the current or a former All Black captain.
M) With a medal winning member of the 2016 NZ Olympic team..

  • I'm confused, are we suppose to take photos of people already on the site, or is this a way of telling people about the site and then taking a pic with/of them? Or is ourselves?

    • You get a photo taken of yourself, holding the sign (Over your face if that is preferred), and then post it here. For bonus points you can be holding products, in a fast food restaurant, with a bunch of others also holding signs, etc.

      • Oh ok, cool

        • +1

Refer to the OzBargain comp for some examples.

  • +1

Time time dust off the "cheapies deal" audit clipboard, chuck on the well worn cheapies t-shirt and take some photo's.

  • Think there are some sockpuppet votes on this comp: both neil and Scotty are associated with ChoiceCheapies!

    • Had to get on to the comp front page somehow!

  • While skydiving, hang gliding, scuba diving, or bungy jumping.

Forgot to bring my shirt with me skiing, but since it's not in this extreme sports list I don't feel so bad now :p

    Neat comp!

  • I need to travel to NZ to participate the competition.

    • +1

Can always fly over and enter!

  • -1

    My first two entries:

    Entry #1:

    B) Eating in a fast food restaurant (e.g. KFC, Burger King, McDonald's)

Though I'm not eating I'm outside the half-built new McDonalds in Silverstream after the old one burnt down.

    Entry #2:

    F) With a uniformed employee/rep from a store with a deal posted on Cheapies (e.g. Hallensteins employee)

Yes, this is an employee from a store with plenty of good deals on here holding a Cheapies face.

I'll have more entries coming soon.

    • +1

      Sweet, nice work.

      Just keep in mind:

The photos are to be of a Cheapie in the wild. A Cheapie must be identified with either a ChoiceCheapies T-shirt (if you have one), or a Cheapie Face sign(This may also be displayed on a mobile device/tablet, or written by hand on paper).

No problems with entrant covering their face, or 'photo bombing', but make sure to be in the photo somehow.

      • True, should probably get another one for #2. I didn't 'photo bomb', I sent an email to a mate of mine (who works at Domino's) asking him to take a picture for me. #1 is my attempt at taking a selfie, might need to have another shot too. You can see in this image that my face is most certainly behind the paper.

        • +1

Sorry, should have been clearer, photo bombing is fine, if someone wanted to be a clown and jump in behind a bunch of people also holding signs, then that's some bonus points there.

Oh I see now! Your hair just blended into the background! That's cool, will definitely count that one then.

        • @Shaw: Did ClipIt just claim:

          B) Eating in a fast food restaurant (e.g. KFC, Burger King, McDonald's)

? Does this mean no one else can now claim bonus points for eating in McDonald's, or is this restricted to McDonald's Silverstream? Is ClipIt allowed to get the bonus points for B) (McDonald's or McDonald's Silverstream) in future entries?

          Cheers.

        • @Mark Wasley:

When any +5 point item or location has been claimed, no one else will be able to claim the bonus using that item. E.G. If someone claims an Eneloop or the Sky Tower for their entry, no one else will be able to use these for their entry.

As long as it's a different McDonald's it should be fine. If the picture is too similar it won't be valid though. As I'm not eating in my picture I'm not entirely sure if it would for those bonus points any way.

        • @ClipIt:

Yea, gotta be eating inside. In your case, could always ask them to get a picture in the building site, while eating, with the workers also holding signs, that'd be good bonus points there.

        • @Shaw: And the rules don't say he doesn't have to be eating McDonald's food inside the building… could be eating anything inside the building site ;)

        • @Mark Wasley:

Yea, he could even be eating a Subway cookie platter inside for extra bonus points!

        • @Shaw:

          Subway cookie platter

Was already going to do that, hope no one else does it ;)

        • @ClipIt:

          Better be quick!

        • @Shaw: Already made an order to pick some up on Friday.

        • @Mark Wasley: Not sure that I'd be allowed in the building site. Lots of signs with warnings up outside. Ended up taking the photo from the train station.

Theres an idea, go to the station (witch has a wikipedia page) with some Eneloops.

  • +2

My first submission. Since the Snack Time didn't come with any drinks, my cheapies spirit lead me to a free drink to go with my lunch.

    • Nice, though as your not actually in KFC I'm not sure it'll count for any bonus points:

      B) Eating in a fast food restaurant (e.g. KFC, Burger King, McDonald's)

      • +1

        Haha I'm banking more on

        D) Holding popular products in public (e.g. Nokia 3310, Eneloop, Canon printer, flashlights, etc)

        • Holding popular products

your not actually holding anything though ;)

your photos quite creative with the L & P though so your still get some points:

Entry score = Base points (0-10) + Bonus points
Base points are determined by the originality, creativity, photo quality, etc.

        • @ClipIt:
          So strict!

        • If someone is alone taking a selfie while holding a sign, they can't be expected to be holding an item as well. In these cases a single popular item will be counted regardless whether it is being held or not. That goes for any further entries of the same nature.

  • +1

    Entry #3
Me eating Pringles outside a half-built Macca's with Eneloops. I couldn't figure out how to actually be eating Pringles in the picture while holding Eneloops and a piece of paper of my head, hope it counts anyway.

    B) Eating in a fast food restaurant (e.g. KFC, Burger King, McDonald's)
    D) Holding popular products in public (e.g. Nokia 3310, Eneloop, Canon printer, flashlights, etc)

    • Dedication mate

  • +1

    Entry # 1 from me:

    A) Next to a famous landmark (e.g. has a Wikipedia entry) - Wellington Airport

    B) Eating in a fast food restaurant (e.g. KFC, Burger King, McDonald's) - I'm inside Burger King, also, creamy mayo cheeseburger on top of headphones, tricky to eat while taking photo :)

    C) With hacked deals (e.g. 125x Colgate Toothbrushes) - $1.98 Sennheiser Px95 deal @ 1-day

    D) Holding popular products in public (e.g. Nokia 3310, Eneloop, Canon printer, flashlights, etc) - Dick Smith Product / HDMI Cable for 0.72 cents

Not sure if these will all count, I couldn't hold the hdmi cable while taking a photo and hold the Cheapies face so could be Mods discretion which I accept.

    Entry score: 20

    Entry # 2 from me:

    A) Next to a famous landmark (e.g. has a Wikipedia entry) - Wellington Harbour / Wellington City (In distance)

    C) With hacked deals (e.g. 125x Colgate Toothbrushes) - $6 for 14 containers of pringles - in this photo, 56 containers in the boxes next to me :)

Not sure if the C) Hacked deals will count as ClipIt has already used pringles (Albeit for part of his eating in Fast Foot answer not for C, also not sure people would consider the Pringle deal a 'hack' i'm more angling for the quantity I have.

    Entry score: 10

    • Shaw can confirm but I wouldn't call the pringle deal a 'hack'.

      • +1

Will be going over and discussing entries with the rest of the team closer to the end of the competition. Will decide case by case, but if it doesn't involve a few coupons stacked, or a bunch of work arounds, then it's unlikely to fall within the range of C.

        • Yeah thought so - didn't really feel like the Pringles were a hack but happened to have the boxes in the car with me at the time.

Hoping the Sennheisers count though? Guess i'll find out closer to the time :)

  • Entry # 3 from me:

    A) Next to a famous landmark (e.g. has a Wikipedia entry) - Te Papa, Museum of New Zealand

Bit of a basic entry - didn't have any Cheapies deals with me in the car! Went for a night shot for dramatic effect, less crowds and the ability to park my car to use as the phone holder with a 10 second timer!

    Bonus points: 5

  • Saw this on the front page:

Only a few more hours until our Cheapies Country competition ends.

    Doesn't it close tomorrow?

    • Competition ends September 28th.

      • ):, I was sure it was the 29th. Can't my last entry I was planning on taking tommorow in.

        • +1

Probably wouldn't worry too much, everyone is getting a prize at this stage.

        • +1

          @Shaw:

Insert Oprah "you're all getting a prize" GIF here.

  • I am going to town tomorrow. I want to enter a photo tomorrow please!

      Competition ends September 28th.

Think you're out of luck like me :)

    • +1

Problem is that the competition has been open for nearly 4 weeks now, with the end date clearly visible. Extending would set a bad precedent, and mean that anyone asking for an extra day or two in the future would more or less have to get it. Could always go for a drive tonight, try and catch some stuff you couldn't during the day.

      • Yeah that's kinda why I took a photo last night, didn't think I would have time today and knew it closed tonight. So it it got extended I'd be a bit disappointed.

Hope Mark and ClipIt can sort something out tonight :)

      • Already got a couple of entries, should be enough a prize with the current no. of entries.

    • +1

If you just go and take a selfie anywhere (in your house) you'll get a T-Shirt. Still aren't nearly as many entries and prizes so any entry (no matter how bad) will get one :)

      • Already got the t-shirt, but won't say no to another one. I'm on holiday but I have some ideas in mind from here at my base…

        • Already got the T-shirt

Where from? Haven't seen any comps to get one lately.

        • +2

@ClipIt: All Power Users have a t-shirt, cheers to Shaw :)

  • +1

    Here we go…

    Entry 1

This is my sister and I with some of my elephants, as I like to collect elephants. To ensure the greatest amount of base points possible, my sister is holding the Cheapie Face sign.

    Entry 2

Also with my elephants, this photo is taken on an angle.

    • +1

Ohh elephants! Got the set of 3 from Malaysia, thought it'd be a cool souvenir.

  • +3

Almost late, but I made it. Phew.

    Entry 1
Got a few strange looks from passers-by with this one (actually, with all of them).
    * Next to a famous landmark - Wellington Cable Car
    * 'Hacked' deal - 25c Kakuro game which is 10% off yesterday and today for Warehouse Money card members day
    * Uniformed store employee - Unichem
    * Popular product - Canon MB2360 printer

    Entry 2
    * Famous Landmark - Hunter Building at VUW Wellington
    * Popular product - 3sixt 22power bank from DSE sale
    * Hacked deal - remaining warehouse chocolate and my 4 cadbury mugs (also part of the 4 for $5 deal) - I would argue that this is a hacked deal because of the free shipping coupon code but I can see how others might disagree

    Entry 3
    * Fast food restaurant (McDs)
    * Famous landmark -Wellington railway station

    Entry 4
Concede that this one is a bit average
    * Famous landmark - Wellington waterfront across the road
    * Popular product - petrol deals are posted relatively often and I am at a Z service station.

    • +1

Impressive job, think you just made yourself $250!

    • "I found a random Unichem employee down a dark alley" sounds too good to be true, bonus points none the less!

  • +1

    Entry four from me:

    Bonus points for:
    A) Landmark (Courtney Place out window - has a Wikipedia entry however I'm posting on mobile)
    B) Fast food - Subway on Courtney place.
    D) Popular products, Subway Cookie.

    Bonus points: 15

As always, feedback on my self scoring welcome :)

  • -1

It's over, and only 5 entries. Amazing odds as there are 10 prizes!

My prediction for who's going to win:
    1. 2cheep
    2. asmcar
    3. Me (ClipIt)
    4. 4znDvd
    5. Mark Wasley

  • Just FYi, the scoring may not be done until next week, I'm currently away for a family function and back Monday.

  • Winners:

    Username Score Prize
    asmcar 60.80 $250 + T shirt
    2cheep 52.30 $150 + T shirt
    4znDvd 16.80 $100 + T shirt
    ClipIt 12.10 T shirt
    Mark Wasley 8.20 T shirt

Congratulations to everyone, will be in touch today to get addresses and PayPal details.

Interestingly we only got 1 famous landmark entry from outside Wellington, so maybe next time the Aucklanders can step up and make a contest of it!

    • +1

Cheers Shaw! Really appreciate it, congrats to the other winners too :)

    • -1

Surely this entry can get at least 10 points (holing a popular product in public and eating in a fast food restaurant) and this entry another 5 (uniformed employee of a fast food chain)?

      • (holing a popular product in public and eating in a fast food restaurant)

No, as I wrote above, you've need to be inside the building. The easiest bet would have been to find another fast food store around there to go to.

(uniformed employee of a fast food chain)

This was disqualified as you weren't personally in the image. If the user in the image had entered this from their account, it would have earned them points.

        • -1

This was disqualified as you weren't personally in the image

In the future could you alert me that an entry isn't valid after I've taken the picture rather then when the comp has closed. I could have easily retaken that picture with myself in it, but I wasn't aware that only one person wouldn't count.

        • @ClipIt:

Will keep that in mind. Just note the rules:

          F) With a uniformed employee/rep from a store with a deal posted on Cheapies (e.g. Hallensteins employee)

    • +1

Tried my hardest to beat asmcar, but can't complain with 2nd! Thanks Shaw/cheapies team.
