  • Has it expired already?

  • Can't see it on link - maybe gone?

    • In store only at mitre 10 MEGA stores. Sold out online. And definitely selling out in store. Was told that many people walked and in and walked out again to purchase more. Due to the limit

  • It's available in-store only. It's on Mitre10's home page. http://www.mitre10.co.nz

Also, probably worth noting that it's limited to 6 per person.

  • Updated URL to go to the homepage. If there is a better URL, let me know and will change again.

  • Anyone know whether these are any good? As I understand that not LED bulbs are created equal.

    • They are reasonably bright but look ugly.

    • Seeing that Mitre 10 are selling them, they should be reasonably good. And their not ugly at all. They are light bulbs after all.

      • The bottom of then is all covered by plastic (like most but not all leds). It might be worth mentioning 'in store only' in the title.

        • Panasonic's the same design or similar.

        • @bigbosssnake:

like most but not all leds

I know that most of them look the same but ones that have come out in the past year or two look different and better. It depends on what kind of light your putting the bulb into. Some lights they look great but some lights the plastic really shows up and doesn't look very good.

  • It was sold online upon posting. However, online has run out. In store only now.

  • Is "Limit of $6" supposed to be "limit of 6", or is it $6 worth (two lamps)?

    • It should be limit 6 not $6, look at the website, that should be changed.

just had a look around house. all existing bulbs are 100watt… not enough light from these

    • A nine watt led is about equivalent to a ninety watt old style bulb, not too far off.

      • The cheaper LEDs don't tend to be as efficient as the newer genration ones. It all comes down to the lumens. I am guessing these are less than 800 lumens, so more like an old 60-75watt bulb.

        • Box says 800 lumens

  • FYI for anyone else these would be similar to old 60w incandescent
    https://www.consumer.org.nz/articles/led-bulb-buying-guide

    • Box says 75 watt equivalent (not 60 watt) at 12% of the energy consumption

I'm getting these LED bulbs from AliExpress for $5 each (The US$3.24 Korea COB version) but only after reading this careful teardown review.

    • Have you actually used these yet? Interested in your evaluation.

      • +1

Yes I have one, it's about as bright as the 8W Panasonic I got from one of those Dick Smith crazy sales late last year. (The teardown video quotes 6W so I'm 2 watts up.)

    • +1

Very cool video, that guy is quite good to watch.

      • "Here's one I cut open earlier", would have saved time!

        • Ha yea, the perils of purchasing one I guess. Can always skip ahead though.

        • @Shaw: Going by his other videos, he's a qualified electrician. Otherwise I'd be worried about plugging the damn thing back in after chopping it to bits.

I am so totally going to steal his term, "The Vice of Enlightenment" Love it

          @Jay:

He seemed to be having fun dodging zaps!

Ha yea, I though that that was an awesome name!

        • @Jay:

A mac killer I need one!

        • @Shaw: More enjoying his Headlamp Urine Colourizer Rips apart his led headlamp so he can replace the white leds with coloured ones. Then when he pisses in the light of his headlamp, makes it shine as different coloured droplets. This guy is a scream!

So not lending this bloke any gear to go camping for the weekend. Would come back in pieces!

        • @Shaw: knives are cheaper and often more effective.

        • @ClipIt:

          Not as subtle though!

        • @Avantime:

Never seen anything safer than that!

    • Looks interesting, I'll probably buy a couple.

    • Are they certified safe to use in NZ?

      • +1

Probably not, but that guy with the funny accent thinks their good.

        • +1

          Probably not, ….

lol, not so funny if there is an electrical fault due to non-compliance :) The report from the fire station chief or insurance company will not be fun reading too…

        • @footy7: would the fire station chief have a good accent.

      • Doesn't it depend on what certs it already has? Is there some sort of personal use allowance for products with the CCC cert under the FTA? Hopefully someone around here knows the answer, because I can't seem to find it out, for personal use.

Just sent my query to Energy Safety, will see what they say.

        • Just sent my query to Energy Safety, will see what they say.

Have they got back to you? Do they say they are safe?

The bulbs are currently on a special if anybody is interested. I would get them from this listing on AliExpress by the same person so you can;'t accidentally buy the non-koran cob one. They claim to be certified in an image of certificates which was intact created in 2002 according to the MetaData, looks like someone has been looking on Google Images.

        • @ClipIt:

No, they didn't reply to me. Real good going on their part.

Yea, I wouldn't take the images as actual copies on any listing on there, doesn't mean they don't have the certs though. Most will give them if asked.

      • Nah, but chances are the $3 Mitre 10 bulbs ain't that much good either. People don't sell 9W LED bulbs for $3 unless there's some sort of issue.

With regards to LEDs there are tons of pure crap coming out of China, but this particular bulb seems pretty good as I trust Clive's Youtube channel. I got my first bulb and it's been running for about 2 weeks with no issues, and I'll make a decision and get some more after I receive this bulb.

  • I picked up a few, and they are fairly good, and good colour. However they are only 15,000 hours, where many are 30,000 hours. But at $3 they will sell out quickly, I suspect they will only have the E27 fittings left tomorrow, as most of the B22 had sold out . They are probably as bright as 75-100w CFL equivalents, and they do direct most light downward in downlighters. They are also very light compared to the philips ones I havem, and the plastic part is smaller than the older generation LEDs. So I am impressed for $3

    • Thanks for the feedback. I got a few, haven't had a chance to try it, however, they definitely look pretty solid built!

  • When I was there, I saw two kids around 6 and 7 years of age grabbing as many as they could. As their father waited outside for them. Haha such a funny sight. But man! They had a few hundred in Stock this morning and one Ferrymead store sold out!

  • Security guard at Ferrymead said 3/4 of their stock was snaffled by the staff. Said he didn't know anything about them, but must be good if the staff are knocking them off before the customers could get to them. He seemed to think they were normally worth about $18 each.

  • At one stage mitre ten mega had 8watts 4 for $20 I think.

  • I can confirm that this LED light bulb is pretty bright! Just slightly dimmer than my 20 watt cfl

  • No B22s left in palmy/feilding this arvo
