  • Mercury can change the prices anytime they want and they would not allow you to break the contract without a panelty.

9.1 All pricing will be subject to change at any time during the Term. You will be given notice of any change in accordance with
Mercury’s General Terms and Conditions for Residential Customers.

They did that earlier but had an issue with terms and conditions not mentioning that but now they have it in there. See https://www.cheapies.nz/node/54977

FWIW I'm with them for electricity and broadband. I'll definitely move to a different broadband provider when my term ends.
For electricity they are pretty good. The app based rewards program is pretty nice, I usually get to score 5+ free power days an year.

    • I'm pretty sure even if they write that in the terms, they cannot unilaterally change the contract like that. You are allowed to leave without penalty at that point.

      As stated here: https://www.cheapies.nz/comment/289793/redir

Variation clauses are likely to be unfair if they have the effect of a ‘blank cheque’, allowing you to adjust an agreed price at your discretion, or to change other important aspects of the contract to suit yourself.

I agree, but unless you are actually keen for an argument (and some might be so inclined to be fair) then maybe best to steer clear of such contracts?

        • It is sad how many people don't know or fight for their rights. I would definitely fight it. I also don't use bundles because you end up spending more money compared to actually looking around and I wouldn't want my power to be terminated because I didn't pay the internet bill.

          • @jesserockz: I think people value their time and have better things to do. Is it worth that much effort when you're not saving that much? People don't understand that time is money.

Why even go for fibre if you can get 5G? I'm on 5G uncapped speed and unlimited data and I pay only $33 a month, open term. I get like 500Mbps download and 80Mbps upload.

          • @jesserockz: Agree! And locking up both broadband and electricity is risky. With many providers they only provide broadband if you have electricity with them. So that limits your options and hard to move.
