I've scanned every single date in August across all routes between Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, New Plymouth, Napier, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown and Invercargill.

These fares are a mix of carriers.

Air New Zealand has the widest domestic network and covers the regional airports the others don’t serve, with fares ranging from Seat (carry-on only) through to Flexi.

Jetstar competes on the main trunk routes between Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown. Its cheapest fares are seat-only, so add checked baggage and other extras only when needed.

Sounds Air operates a number of smaller regional routes, while other operators appear on selected connections.

Check which carrier operates your flight before booking, as baggage allowances, change rules and included extras can differ considerably.

New Zealand in August is deep winter:

• The Southern Lakes ski fields around Queenstown and Wānaka are in the middle of the ski season.
• The West Coast and Fiordland are at their moodiest.
• The main centres are relatively quiet between the July and October school holidays.
• It is also one of the cheapest periods of the year for travelling around the country.

Cheapest Fares Found

The cheapest fare found anywhere in the country is:

• Auckland to Christchurch: from $82 one way on 17 August
• Christchurch to Auckland: from $85 one way on 9 August
• Hamilton to Christchurch: from $90 one way on 5 August

The main trunk routes between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch all have lowest fares under $100 one way.
