Note: Gemini and ChatGPT mobile apps have live video options to get info about what you're looking at, and they're free.
I'd feel better pointing my phone at something than walking round with hidden cameras in glasses.

To be fair a pair of standard prescription Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses from OPSM is $720 vs $575 for this pair of matte prescription transition Ray Ban Meta Wayfarer glasses which are almost $150 cheaper. I am looking forward to the novelty and saving $150 at the same time.

FYI Video is stored to cloud, so have to use their app for editing. Can't transfer raw to other editing apps.

    Also Meta is always recording.

I've got a pair of these with all AI/cloud features disabled - photos and videos get synced into my iPhone camera roll, and they can be easily shared to any app you'd like.

  • For anyone confused (like I was)
This is Meta Ray Bans Gen 1 not Ray Ban Stories

I thought this was Ray Ban Stories (pillbox shaped case)
Ray Ban Stories you could put tape over the LED and it will still record. More involved bypass for the Gen 1 Meta Ray Bans

I just hate the idea of these. I already hate how addicted I am to tech and they want me to attach it to my face.

  • can I use southern cross vision and dental add on to pay for these? :)

  • Sorry, just wanted to make sure, we need a vpn to use the AI features in NZ right?

    • My understanding is you need to have your VPN set to Australia or USA when you download and install the Meta AI (previously meta view) app on your phone and activate your glasses.

nope not anymore. You had to with the Ray Ban Stories now they just use the Meta app. No need for VPN

        • Yup, not anymore. They blocked it quite some time ago.
I thought the VPN hack might work again, so I tried it this morning - but no luck. It doesn’t work.

So, consider getting different AI glasses, e.g. Rokid, if you plan to use them with AI.

I have two pairs of these, plus Rokid.

@huntlai: activated MetaAI a week ago with VPN to USA, then works without.

            • @lasc: Awesome, Thank you for confirming that!

            • @lasc: Interesting - will give it another go, was trying it with Surfshark.
I won't recommend get it for AI and hoping it will always works as it doesn't.

    Looks like a privacy nightmare.

Might seem a bit otp but I genuinely think there needs to be laws in place around these things….and concealed cameras in general…

      • +1

There are, which is why some local retailers have no plans to carry these kinds of devices; too difficult to navigate the legislation around covert visual recordings.

        • I think Meta decides which retailers and which countries have access to there products. I dont think any NZ retailer would have any influence over Meta. I doubt NL, HN, JB or PB would decline the option to sell this product if given the opportunity.

          • @Deephardfunky: I imagine you're right on who's making the call, but I've heard from people in that industry that it's legislative issues preventing them from being sold here. Seems a little odd that there would be anything specific to NZ that they haven't encountered elsewhere but I've not looked into it beyond a couple of conversations.

  • Is this the pair that won't allow you to choose which AI to use?

    • only metaAI

      • yeah that's what i thought! rokid would be a bit better then, at least it would let you pick which one

  • anyone knows if they can be ordered with prescription number or just sun glasses?

    • You can purchase prescription lenses x VR Rock.

  • Just recieved the pair I ordered Friday 10th April. I set Nord VPN to USA and proceeded through the setup process. Everything works as it should including all the AI Features.
