EV sales are going to go off when RUCs hit petrol.

Til then, eh. My 2-tonne, 8 seater is 15c/KM even at $3/L.

A Kia EV9 (there's not much in the way of 7+ seater EVs) costs $111,000 and gets 6c/km (at 30c/kWh) which means 13c/KM.

Math is hard so I just don't bother trying to work shit out tbh haha - but real world data - after looking at the charging summary for our garage charger, in the last 12 months we have added 13617km of charge into the car, which cost ~$280 of power. Not sure I would get anywhere near that cost benefit with our other ICE car in the garage :D (granted this doesn't include RUC's; but even still)

Not everyone needs 8 seats, can get an EV for 3-4k these days. Combine that with a power plan that includes free periods and you only end up paying for RUC. That's how I run mine anyway, cheap driving that's for sure. sub 8c/km.

Exactly, it's more than just using your power. Optimise everything around it to see some real good savings. Had my ev for two years and have saved thousands I would have wasted on petrol.

Power prices could easily double in price. My on peak power price is over 70 cents/ kWh
Petrol prices will drop a lot when most tax is removed when RUC come in
EVs make more sense if you have solar panels

fwiw our decision for an EV was more than just fuel/power source. Its just a far more enjoyable driving experience all round; quieter, smoother, more fun, better power delivery, less ongoing maintenance, oh and a butt tonne cheaper to run.
But yeah power prices could easily double, petrol prices could easily double too - my crystal ball is on the fritz at the moment, so I can't confirm either way. I think the one sure thing is that neither prices are really going to decline over the long term so any shift to a cheaper, better platform is a positive move imo.

        • The sweet spot is to have both if people have two cars imo.

          • @nzmax: PHEV is the (all-in-one) answer then :P

            • @Neotk: Apart from the RUC charges mess on PHEVs. You essentially end up paying double road tax when driving with the petrol engine. Maybe it will be better though when all cars move over to RUCs and tax is removed off fuel.

              • @nzmax: Wait, they charge RUC on PHEVs as well? I understand but it really does put the PHEVs in a weird spot. Agreed with you, they should remove the tax from fuel and move RUCs to all cars. That would be the cleanest approach.

                • @Neotk: Yes, PHEV's have RUC's but at half price.

Was meant to be a bit higher than half price, but the government made an error let it be.

If you are doing a decent percentage of electric running in a PHEV, you are fine. (and if it is something like a BMW i3 RWX with 120km of electric range, even if your REX is broken down, just having it present gives you half price RUC's). But if you don't plug in your PHEV, you get smoked on road tax. Not a terrible outcome.

The Transition to RUC's will make everything cleaner.

      • With a time of use plan, most people can charge their EV's for 15-20c/kWh.

EV's make sense regardless of the solar situation.
