  • Wonder if we'll see prices drop much more with Thai Airways returning with direct flights

    • yes, I was excited to see that!

    • +1

No, they are already making next to no profit with these prices.
More competition isn't going to bring the price down further.

Thai Airways will take significant market share from AirNZ. Not Chinese airlines.

  • Prices are high early April as everyone's going for Thai new year, but drop significantly right after it around mid April, be aware that April-June is also the hottest time of year. From May onwards it's monsoon season so you'll want to avoid that.

  • I have read horror stories booking through third party websites. Has anyone had success with these working no problems?

  • I travelled with Hainan Airlines during my Christmas break, and overall, I found their service better than Qantas. However, there was one major inconvenience on my return to Auckland. Hainan does not offer through checked luggage for this route(only during the return journey), so I had to collect my bags in Haikou, clear immigration, and then re‑check the luggage for the connecting flight.
With only a four‑hour layover, this process was quite stressful — especially because the baggage drop counter didn’t open until two hours before departure. There was a long queue, and airport security wasn’t very helpful. Travellers should be prepared for this extra step, as it can be time‑consuming.
Despite the hassle, we still managed to board well ahead of time. But ideally, the airline should remove this unnecessary re‑check requirement to make the transit experience smoother.
