TradeMe are getting really weasely with their fee structure these days so this requires a bit of explaination:
Ping fees are 2.19% of item+shipping price
Also, this promotion is launched concurrently with with a new type of buyer fee for these categories:
It seems that they removed the actual fee costs from that page, but someone on Reddit screenshotted it first:
Given that we can't accept a bank transfer, I think its safe to say that I won't be listing for sale with TradeMe.

Use My Products, it allows Bank Transfer and Cash options included

Maybe not for In-Trade users …
They do make exceptions, though like any decision they make, the reasoning is nbdceifbekcn

Cool - I'll have a look at that.
Thanks!

Are bank transfers not allowed anymore via TM as payment methid?
That's how I read the link above. Do you think I have that wrong (excepting as per Huntakillaz post)?

@Alan6984: Bank transfer is still an option for all buyers.
Ping is only forced on in-trade sellers and the listings in these two categories during this promotion.
For in-trade sellers theres no bank transfer tick box but a buyer can email and ask for a bank account number if they want. In trade sellers can still include details in their auto payment email but cant stop buyers paying with ping.

Trademe is a rip off.

People always say that, but what are you comparing them to? Most reputable online marketplaces I’ve seen, locally & overseas have equal or greater fees.
Designer Wardrobe NZ charges around 13% + 3% for card payments, 5% for AfterPay.
eBay AU/US, Poshmark, Mercari & OfferUp charge 13% or more.TradeMe are at about 10% including Ping. It seems reasonable to me.

I agree - I've never had an issue with the fees per se, but not allowing buyers to pay me via bank transfer, and having to accept folding stuff is crap.
FaceBook MarketPlace is literally a waste of time.

Professional sellers have been unable to officially accept bank transfers since November last year. So a lot of people already know the workaround. Some sellers even explain how to do it in the description. "If you don't want to use Ping, tick pay with cash and I will send bank details"

@kiwical: Yep - that works, but if you have a problem, and you've circumvented TradeMe's policy, you are on your own even more than you would otherwise have been.

@Alan6984: Not really, they don't do anything in either case if something goes wrong. They just don't care.

Hasn't been my experience, but then I'm a nice guy with long standing, and good rep - I accept that your mileage might well vary of course.

I have used a few like Gumtree, kijiji etc. They both did a great job for me considering they are free.
Monopoly/Duopoly is never a reason to do better.

I screenshot the charges and extracted the information.
What is the service fee?
To celebrate the release of our seventh Circular Economy Report, from 12-22 February, we are removing Success Fees for casual items in Home & Living and Clothing & Fashion. We are also experimenting with a Service Fee in these categories charged to buyers for payments made via Ping, on casual seller listings.

Will be intresting to see what Trademe does when the new "No Credit Card Fees" get introduced in MaY (I think) - I bet tradme will say they offer more like buyer protection, etc but really we know its just a fee. Will be intresting to see how the CC see this.

Think the changes only apply to instore purchases.

That's correct.
The changes are only for in-store purchases. Online or card not present transactions are not included, so TradeMe will not be bound by them.

Com commission also says it shouldn't be over 2% anywhere (not that anyone enforces it)
We would expect any surcharges to be no more than 0.7% for contactless debit card payments or 1.5-2% for credit card payments. Many merchants only have one rate, so we consider any surcharge above 2% is hard to justify.

I always read these posts for the comments, the same old remarks about trademe and their business model, it never gets old.

Most people don't base their 'thoughts' on reality, or their actual, objective, experience (or even if they do, they base it on a sample size of almost nothing) - they usually base it on what their friends and family say, or what they read somewhere years ago, and it went in, got stored in an empty space in their head, and nothing is ever going to shift it.
Consider how many people post comments about how stores should close down because, in the poster's opinion, this or that store doesn't offer great prices, and all retailers are ripping 'everyone' off, and obviously less competition would help everyone ….
Perhaps we should celebrate such thinking as it facilitates the rest of us being so 'lucky' and doing so much better in life :-)
Heaven help us if such people took up the (supposed) easy money option and set up their own business to take advantage of us all!

Everyone complains but also anytime that's tried to compete knows how hard it is to build a marketplace. There's a lot that happens at trademe that not many people really appreciate. Servers ain't cheap!

Yep - like I said above, I've personally never had a problem with TradeMe's fees, and whenever I have had a problem, their customer services have come to the party and gotten things sorted for me.

Yep! We agree on the internet 😀
Had to happen to two random people at some time - we all just thought it would take a lot longer in the life of the universe :-)
