I use this a couple of times a year, and it does a great job of killing onehunga weed.

  • Reviews aren't that good. Not sure what to believe.

I gotta admit, it might not be the best but it works pretty well on my backyard and, for $15, it’s a very compelling option for four litera.

It might be slightly better than doing nothing. But you can do a lot better if you buy slow release fertiliser and a decent lawn weed killer. I use Turfclean Ultra in a sprayer and NZLA granular fertiliser (so a walk behind spreader is a plus). Weed and feed is a sugar hit for the lawn, nothing more. The right way to do it is to fertilise the lawn, then wait a week or two for everything (lawn and weeds) to start cranking. Then you hit the weeds with something like turfclean ultra. There is a big step up in effort required between the two methods though. But benefit between them is also far apart. You can compare the active ingredient levels between the products.

I find the best part of this is the applicator that you can then put other herbicides into and blast over places instead of having to mix it and use a little sprayer.

  • Looks like Bunnings is price-beating Farmlands

  • Has anyone tried this with a hose attached and how fast does it spray and how wide is the spray coverage? I have a lot of areas I need to spray this onto and I used a manual pump before (something like this - https://www.bunnings.co.nz/ozito-pxc-18v-15l-backpack-garden…) and it took ages to get the job done.

NVM, found my answer. This is actually perfect for what I need.

    • The bottle is well designed, we cover over 200m² of grass really quickly with it when we've done it in the past. We found it sprays probably about 3m wide a couple of metres in front of you so pretty fast to apply. Our issue is our main weed is a horrible type of grass so does little to solve our main problems.

      • crab grass?

      • The spray machine and some weed killer did wonders for me. I don't have a massive house so I end up doing my back and front and my neighbors fronts too, it's quite relaxing. In the begining you will kill all those pesky weeds and the grass wont look great but then it will repopulate fine. Also, since we no longer have extensive weeds, we do a lot of "micro" weeding, picking up the small sprout we see when walking around, while it still has a small root.

  • It really don’t recommend this product if you actually care about or take pride in your lawn. It’s cheap but neither weeds nor feeds particularly well. Better off using quality standalone products.

And def dont use on kikuyu grass

    • what happens on Kikuyu grass?

      • From the Yates website:
We don't recommend using Yates Weed 'n' Feed hose-on or Yates Turfix on your kikuyu lawn, because kikuyu is sensitive to selective weedkillers and there's a risk of burn damage. Yates Weed'n'Feed Granular is your safe option for kikuyu and other warm-season grasses.

      • Iv used on Kikuyu and no issues at all

  • Have to be mindful as well if you use a selective herbicide like, this generally all over your lawn. Then the next few times cut all clippings needs to go in the red bin. The herbicide residue doesn't hurt them but stays in the grass clippings for ages so if you compost it yourself it'll still damage your plants, and if in the green bin and commercially composted, can still show up in the end product. Iv used many composts over the years and occasionally you get one which has herbicide still in it, causes the plants to deform. No bueno

    • i just mulch and dont catch the grass until the suggested period. Doesnt leave it looking the prettiest but saves trying to find a place to put the grass

      • good option, my dog is stupid enough he would probably eat the mulched grass 😂

  • In have noticed you can only do this once per store. Once someone does a price beat, the dynamic price on the product is changed to a lower price saying it is on sale. Even if the sale price is just a few cents of saving over the previous price, in order to price bear the competition. Hadn’t encountered this previously.

That or your nearest Mitre10 will magically have no stock on the shelves even though dozens will show up in the system as available on hand.

      • They now show the stock numbers on the electric tag. It is just a small single number displayed on the bottom of the tag, it doesn't stay 'stock', so guessing it is there to help staff. . It is a useful tip for anyone shopping there and I always take a photo of the tag.

        • Yes, you are right but it’s always that they can’t find those 34 bottles of Engine Oil which magically disappear 🤣

  • Does anyone know if this can be used on your lawn? My lawn grows very quickly and I have to attend to it regularly, which I hate and it's a waste of time. I was thinking I can try something like this on my lawn to slow down the growth, not killing it completely. If the grass look a bit yellow, that's fine to me, as long as the growth is halted and they look nice and tidy.

I'm not a gardener or anything, so I have zero knowledge when it comes to this stuff.

    • The instructions say to give it at least a week after the last mow and a week before the next, basically it wants seven days in each direction before mowing again so it could get a bit out of control if twoo weeks is too long for your grass.

    • +1

      I wouldn't.
The fertiliser component will encourage grass growth, not slow it down.
The main problem is probably your grass type which is likely a faster growing variety like kikuyu.
I think your best solution if you want to keep a lawn is to change the grass type to something slower growing. Fine Fescue grasses are great here in South Island but you might be better with a tall fescue as I see you are in Auckland with a wamer climate than I have. This is obviously going to involve some initial work to resow and establish, particularly as you mentioned you have quite a large area but a better long term solution.

      • Sorry, I meant to say berm, not lawn. You know, the patch of grass by the sidewalk outside your house. It's our responsibility to mow the berm and I do it because I'm responsible, but I hate doing it, because it regrows almost within 1~1.5 weeks. I don't wanna spend money on repatching it with something else, because it's not really part of my property. I just wanna slow down the growth of the berm. Is there anything I can get from Bunnings? ChatGPT doesn't seem to help much here.

        • If it is a kikuyu berm then there is not a lot you can do. Don’t feed it as I mentioned above because that will encourage it to grow would be the main thing.

Potentially something like Lawnpro Turfclean Ultra might slow it down but it could also kill it off completely so hard to know. It’s not recommended on kikuyu as it can stunt growth, although that might work for you if that’s all it does.
          It is available at Bunnings.

          • @bigcheese: Thanks, I think mine is kikuyu, I'll check out the recommended product.
