I was in the market for one of these and would of jumped onto this deal, but amazon is stopping third party apps on these things. https://www.tomsguide.com/computing/vpns/amazon-cracks-down-…

Suddenly jbhifi and noel leeming have them for $79, the warehouse for $78, it's not a deal, they're trying to clear their stock before there is no demand for them.

      block updates?

      • Yeah i'm using Netguard to stop updates (and homescreen ads).

        • Good tip. Do you use this 4k Max? Currently using the firestick HD with Stremio & RD for 1080p streaming, but I’m looking for the cheapest 4k option.

          • @barnacle: Yeah I got the 4K Max from that $30 Talk is Cheap deal that was posted on Cheapies two months ago, though I rarely watch anything in 4K lol

        • true - i think theres a lot of fearmongering currently, just use netguard or adguard dns to block the update servers, then use adguard app to block the system update apps, and for good measure, block the update servers on your router. also helps blocking some of the ads.

    • Pricespy shows it was a similar price this time last year: https://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=7900139#statistics

    • Interesting, do you know what would be the go-to streaming device would be instead of going with this?

For the price? Google TV chromecasts second hand imo

      • i use google tv and sideload my apps.

        • Do you use Stremio + Real Debrid on the Google Chromecast (4K)?
Mine works great with 1080p content, but it struggles with 4K for some reason.

          • @Bargain-Hunter: Mine is generally ok watching it, takes a bit to get started and occasionally bugs out after resuming but overall it's good. I always try to find the highest bit rate versions when I select what to watch.

I do also have everything on ethernet though so can't comment on performance over wifi.

            • @Everettpsycho: Thanks! The only thing I haven’t tried yet is ethernet. 4K playback on my device is pretty choppy, so I’ll grab the adapter and see if that helps.

              • @Bargain-Hunter: You can use a standard usb c hub and it should pickup ethernet via usb or dongle.

          • @Bargain-Hunter: I stream 4k on stremio on my Google chromecast 4k without issues. I remember that some very high bit rate files sometimes don't work.

Also, remember that it even depends on the tv it is connected to. Like if chromecast has to change the resolution to match with tv. Along with the wifi speed and interferences if any.

      • I'm not sure. But I know I hate chromecasts because anyone on the same home network has access to it, interrupting each other with incorrect casts. I think i'll end up setting up a mini pc.

You can turn off "Let others control your cast media" from the setting and nobody will get any notification about your cast.

  • Anyone else bought it for $37 from jb hifi las year june?

I love my 4k. I run smartube (no ads on you tube), and nordvpn when i liket
. I also run tvimate power 8k + and ip tv service which gives 1000s of channels and tv shows and movies for about 100$nz per annum. Best investment in tv ever! Heaps of non Amazon store apps via downloader app, which ironically is in the store.
