Surprised they're not forcing ping on this promotion. They recently announced that all In Trade sellers will have the band deposit option removed from payment options and will force ping on all In Trade sellers.

another reason why im over tm!

      • if the alternative is facebook marketplace, then trade me it is lol

Yeesh, TM really is going down the tubes eh?

    • The only way to counter it is to increase price 2.2% and offer discount for "cash" sales via bank transfer.
Most people are happy paying Ping for added protection and convenience.

I don’t mind the change tbh, 95% of my buyers use Ping/Afterpay anyways. The only thing I don’t like in it now further disincentivises commercial sellers to properly identify themselves as “in-trade” since it can offer their listings a clear point of difference for the buyer.

Overseas eBay AU/US has removed bank payments as an option for a long time now. Although they do allow Venmo, and bank transfers are much less of a thing there.

The most annoying thing about Trade Me for me personally is their site is so unbelievably buggy. The revamped interface is nice but I keep getting website errors & redirecting issues on searches/support pages.

      • eBay tried to remove bank payments in 2008 and mandate paypal. The Australian version of our Commerce Commission said no, you can't do that. So while they are no longer that popular as far as I am aware bank deposits are still a thing on eBay (AU)

So there is scope for Comcom here to take a look at what Trade Me are proposing.

        • I think the difference there is that they tried to make it PayPal only.

Nah I think eBay AU has gotten rid of bank deposits. I’ve never seen that option at checkout. They do offer plenty of payment methods though:

          • Credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard)
          • Afterpay
          • Zip
          • Apple Pay
          • Google Pay
          • PayPal
          • eBay gift card or eBay voucher
  • Another one!
More frequent than a Briscoes sale.

I used TradeMe for the first time in a while yesterday… app seems buggy af - when creating a new listing, it kept failing validation and wouldn’t let me go to the next step as apparently I hadn’t selected a category (I had). Thought I’d save it as a draft, and resume it. That didn’t work either - the draft just opens a blank listing. Had to list on a computer instead.

I also noticed they’ve now introduced a fee for buyers - “Service Fee”.

    • Is service fee for buying allowed by Commerce Commission?

      • +2

The service fee is very common in traditional auction houses and has been used by most of them for decades, so yeah its all good.

The commerce commission are unlikely to care given how clear the fees are (when you try and bid/buy it tells you what the fee will be.)

But yes, its shit. Little bit of chat about it here: https://www.cheapies.nz/node/53247

      • However mandating Ping is perhaps not allowed. Complaints have been made to Comcom about that. When eBay tried it in Australia they got rejected by their version of our Commerce Commission.

        • thats a good point. I might actually submit a complaint on my own for this - good shout

Oh wow - thats a hard no for me. Didn't realise they were playing around with this.
