Samsung Trade in Question

I recently purchased a S25 Ultra from Samsung and traded in my A33 for $75, plus a trade in boost which was around $300-$400.

They have now assesed the device and claim that it has lcd damage, and the new value is $0. My question is if I accept the offer will I still get the trade in boost amount, therefore only loosing the $75? Thanks

I think you're understanding it correctly, you'll lose the $75 device value but still receive the trade in boost amount of $300 - $400. No guarantees from me though sorry

  • Yes, generally you should still receive the boost. But honestly with Samsung it's recommended to video the device & packaging process to dispute these sorts of things. Unfortunately it's very common

  • What if you tradein a phone not in the list? The value can be 0, but will they charge you boost amount ?

Pretty sure you can't go forward with the trade in process if the phone isn't on their list.

      • For clarity does this mean you've tried it? I'm assuming what the OP means is they will pick an item (probably an 0 valued one) and then send in the wrong phone one that isn't even a valid item. Assurant do seem to have a process in place for people sending in the wrong item. IIRC people have reported they've been incorrectly told they sent in some other higher or lower value item (but still a valid tradein) than they actually sent in probably because Assurant mixed up tradeins. So what do they do when you send in something invalid?

I can't say I'd recommend this even never having heard results of anyone trying it. Even if it works for someone there's no guarantee it'll work for you especially since Assurant are notoriously unreliable when it comes to tradeins. And normally when Assurant tries to screw you over assuming you're confident they're wrong even without a video you can push it all the way including the Commerce Commission as IIRC someone did.

If you send in an invalid tradein you're SoL if they reject it completely & remove your bonus. You could try the Wise or otherwise deny them the ability to charge you trick but you're still technically in debt then and best just not to go there. Far better to just spend a little time on Trademe and find something $50-100 (depending on how much time you spend and send a valid tradein. But stil would be interesting to hear if anyone ever did try this.

Yes you're correct that's what happened to me. My screen was broken so it made my device $0 but they still gave me the 300 boost at the time.

  • I was in this boat last year for an s24 ultra. Old device value deemed $0, sent fully charged and they claimed it wouldn't power on.

Emailed support for clarity then accepted the value change. Samsung didn't raise any issues with paying back the trade in boost promo so I let it slide.

  • Samsung Trade-ins are handled by assurant. Which doesn't have the best reputation.

I traded in my wife's Galaxy watch and because the band is a different color (still Samsung genuine) they said it's a bespoke model and took 10 dollar off the trade in.

    • are you sure it was the band that was the issue?
For my Watch 5 trade in, they stated it was not LTE version, only bluetooth and took $10 off. However, the website did not have an option to choose between LTE and Bluetooth version so I fought them on this.

Edit: I see their website still does not differentiate between LTE and Bluetooth when choosing which device you want to trade-in. Unless your device was LTE indeed and the issue is really the band colour, I'd suggest fighting them on this. Just really tired of their service.

I traded in a phone worth $0 - I stated it is broken. But they charged me the trade-in bonus. They did eventually reply and stated that the system automatically charges back the bonus if the phone is valued at $0 but this didn't happen on 2 previous orders where the phone was valued at $0

      • We traded in a Watch 5 bluetooth
there is no LTE version trade in option as far as I can see

        • yes that's what I'm saying. I don't think they deducted $10 for the band colour, but rather for the fact that it's not LTE.

          • @vorman: Im not sure they didn't say why it's deducted but rather the watch is "bespoke"

            • @Zyo: Mine said that too. If you go on the trade-in page again to track your trade-in, there's a link in the assessment section showing the reason for the mis-match.

  • when i shopped on the website and put a device that's dead no power, they gave me 0 for device and 0 bonus.
When updating to a working device it gave us bonus + device value.

    has that changed now?

    • Did you go right through to the checkout/cart? The bonus usually shows in cart.

      • Ah my bad I didn't go that far thank you!!

  • I've done 5 trade ins so far, and have had zero issues so far.

    • You're lucky - if they get it wrong it goes really wrong and it's very difficult to actually contact someone who will resolve the issue.

I was slightly worried with my last trade in, as I had few minor scratches on my watch and phone, but both got accepted. Also can confirm you can leave screen protectors on devices.

  • Has anyone who bought the tv's (https://www.cheapies.nz/node/53266)
Had their trade in completed yet? As in you've gotten the PDF Invoice for your TV and had no issue about the trade-in.

  • I purcahsed s25 ultra by exchanging iphone which is locked and the tradein value is 0+ 600boost
I recieved the mail they recived the phone and tradein is complete, you dont have to do anything,
Today i seen they attempted 600 transaction to ny bank

    • Sheesh, that's super scummy from them. Especially if you ticked 'no' for all the condition questions which included one asking if the phone was free of a screen lock etc

    • I had posted this in another thread but a similar thing happened to me except they did the charge back days after I had already received the confirmation email that the trade-in was accepted and I didn't need to do anything further. It took three days of back and forths, emailing support who had to forward me to another team. They finally confirmed it was their mistake and I'd get a refund but couldn't explain why I was given a charge back in the first place. To top it all off, it took three weeks before my refund was actually processed and money was back in my account.

      • Who did you Contact? I Concted via WhatsApp as the lve chat suggested and zero response. Fuming to say the least. My credit card bill is now requiring payment.

    • I also got the same situation, but i'm a poor man, i never have my debit card over than $100, they attempted to deduct 600 from my account but they failed. LMAO 🤣
