Floor Models: Up to 70% off Sleepyhead, 30-40% off Furniture, 30% off TV/Audio, 20% off Tech & More @ Smiths City (Instore)

As I and many others wade nervously through the administration emails (I'm getting mixed messages as to the outcome of my heatpump purchase…), Smiths City is in dire straits I guess, even if voluntary administration, and having a liquidation sale.

Smiths City — Voluntary Administration & Liquidation Sale

Smiths City (2020) Limited was placed into voluntary administration at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, 2 September 2025. Licensed insolvency practitioners Colin Gower and Diana Matchett (both of BDO Christchurch) have been appointed as joint administrators (smithscity.co.nz).

All nine Smiths City stores and its online store were temporarily closed to allow the administrators to conduct an urgent financial assessment and stocktake, which were completed today (smithscity.co.nz).

Reopening & Liquidation Sale:
- Auckland and Christchurch stores reopened this afternoon.
- Stores in Greymouth, Oamaru, Alexandra, Gore, and Invercargill will reopen Saturday, 6 September at 9:00 a.m.
- The Dunedin store will remain closed (smithscity.co.nz).

This is a liquidation sale, running for a limited time only and while stocks last (smithscity.co.nz).

Terms of Trade

Consumer Alert: What You Need to Know
  • If you’ve paid a deposit: Most customers have been contacted by the administrators with order updates. Those not yet contacted “will be contacted again in the coming days” (smithscity.co.nz, 1news.co.nz).
  • There are no refunds or exchanges, and gift cards aren’t accepted—so be absolutely sure before you buy.
  • Everything is sold as-is, and warranties are void. That means you're on your own if something goes wrong.
  • Only floor stock is on sale, and quantities are strictly while-stocks-last.
  • Dunedin store remains closed—no reopening and no access to stock from there (smithscity.co.nz).

Bottom line
This is a serious clearance of nearly all of Smiths City stock—but it’s aggressive, no-holds-barred liquidation. If you're shopping, don’t expect refunds, returns, or warranties. Everything is final.

you know, my personal opinion on gift cards are they should be held in a trust or like a govt account and with no expiry. I know on their financial statement it is treated as a liability because it's something they owe. But really the money given for the gift card is no different to if someone gave me a cheque to go buy something except they have chosen that store. I understand if it's like a promo or refund and they have given a credit but gift cards. I know people could easily buy a preezee card or a card which can go to multiple places. But just my personal opinion lol And I wouldn't mind having like a $2-5 dollar loading fee if it guarantees there's no expiry and in an event like this I can claim back the money as it's sitting in a trust

I can't remember who said it, but they said the best gift voucher is cash. We should never get rid of it.

      • +3

I agree, in most asian countries they give cash as gifts on birthdays, weddings, special days or new year. Gift cards are literally when stores or government hands outs stuff to stimulate the economy lol nowadays since everyone is online they send digital cash through chats.

Anyways, my heart goes out to all those affected, staff and customers

I was shocking when i was told my $500 gift cards are not allowed today in Wairau park store. Shameful business

Why nz law make gift cards holders are low priority creditors.

  • +1

Has anyone in Auckland and Christchurch been in today, and are there really good deals?

    • +1

TBF i have rarely seen good pricing at smiths city, westgate JB is having a cost+5% promo tomorrow as their opening special though

  • Where is Auckland store? Is it in Wairau area?

  • +1

Which stores in Christchurch are still going? Hornby closed before they went in to liquidation so I guess it's just the one at the colombo left operating.

    • +1

Northwood was the one that called me today, so they're open.

      • +1

I live up the road so might pop in and see what they have.

For warranty, wouldn’t customers be able to claim under the manufacturer’s warranty directly under CGA, as long as they operate in NZ?

For warranty, wouldn’t customers be able to claim under the manufacturer’s warranty directly under CGA, as long as they operate in NZ?

Not under the CGA, since you would have no contract with the manufacturer.

Your contract, and therefore your rights, are with respect to the retailer that sold to you. That's why you always have to consider counter-party risk when you get any kind of insurance (including a guarantee or warranty) of any kind. Its only worth something if the other party is around to stand behind it.

If the manufacturer explicitly chooses to provide a warranty to a secondary purchaser (who buys from their customer, being the retailer), then that's different of course, but often that comes with an obligation on the purchaser to actually register their purchase within some reasonable timeframe (such as ninety days or whatever), and many people are just too lazy to even do that.

      • +4

You can still make a claim direct with the manufacturer under CGA.

I've done it before. No warranty needed.

The manufacturer might have accepted your request, but they were not obligated under the CGA.

Be careful conflating two different things as you might fool yourself, let alone misleading others.

          • +3

@Alan6984: According to the Consumer website (https://www.consumer.org.nz/articles/consumer-guarantees-act) the manufacturer (or importer) has fewer obligations than the retailer, but still need to guarantee that the products are of acceptable quality.

Edit: The "When to complain to manufacturers and importers" section is relevant:

If there is a problem with the retailer, you can complain to the manufacturer (if it has an office in New Zealand) or where the goods are imported, to the importer or distributor.

            and

Complaining to the manufacturer is useful when, for example, the retailer has gone out of business or is proving hopeless to deal with

  • No mention of the North store?

Did we still actually have a Palmerston North store?

    • +1

It closed in August last year, apparently.

      • Wow no way

      • There was a smith city outlet there a few months back. No sure about now

      • Also the Masterton store closed about 1-2 years ago.

      • Incorrect, the Palmy North store only just closed last month. They had a big sale on to clear everything, including shop fittings. I went in there and there wasn't much left, and the stuff that was there was old and worn out for the most part.

        • That is, in fact, the sale mentioned in the post I linked to. Not sure why I thought it was 2024.

  • +2

I am sure you can get the standard warranty via the manufacturer.

  • +2

Be really wary with this - this might look like a good sale, but liquidators will often pitch a "liquidation sale" that's just like a typical sale. E.g. Smiths City and Noel Leeming frequently have "20% off" sales - which is what this is. Of-course lots of people get fooled and clear out the stock anyway.

Always wise to check PriceSpy to see where the price history was before buying.

    • +2

I went in last weekend after hearing some rumors - everything was 30-60% off lowest price on floor stock. Picked up a few small appliances that were discounted but they refused to honor the price at checkout because it wasn’t what the computer said.

      • Wtf…

        • So I just went in and everything is the same price as last weekend except the beds have an extra 10% off

  • This is ironic….. Dunedin Store re-opened a short time ago (closed for a couple of months after moving from a mall and refitting another location) with zero fanfare (didn't know it had opened until I drove past).

Now this…… I would almost put my money on the fact that the store is so new they have no old stuff to clear….. They did that when they left the mall several months ago.

  • Im pissed i have $100 gift card

  • Risky buys with no returns or warranties available. Would have to be deeply discounted

    • Would you be able to claim via the manufacturer? I've been put off Samsung and LG appliances as supposedly the warranty is painful and getting some one to fix it difficult especially

      • +2

Id stay clear of Samsung whiteware regardless of retailer warranty or manufacturer warranty for the reasons you just said.

        • I had good experience dealing directly with samsungn under thr CGA

          • +1

@nzmax: Not home appliances, but for mobiles and their accessories Samsung's service is shocking. There's a whole thread in it in the forum about how awful their customer service is for multiple people.

  • +1

The Northwood one was packed but the deals weren't that great on most things.

    • Thanks for saving me that likely germ riddled experience.

      • There were cushions for example but they were $80 with 40% off. Or you can go to Spotlight and get them new for $20 and a warranty should they rip etc.

    • Buy anything?

      • +1

Nope. I did look at a blu ray player but no box or cables so eh, not worth the risk.

  • I agree, this sale is not a sale.

There is a Dreame A1 Pro garden mower on sale at Smith City for $3299. Harvey Norman have it on sale for $2999. Go figure.

  • They have just sent another email to me saying ALL STOCK FLOOR ITEMS 70% OFF
