  • If any auckland parents are concerned about their children's hearing shouldn't they go to their GP (free for children) and get referred to starship audiology department(also free)?
If the "Audiology students under expert supervision" detects potential issues with the children's hearing will they have the ability to referred them to starship directly or do the parents still have to go to their GP?

    • +1

I don't think this is an unfair question to ask, but FWIW I've done this (the adult testing) and view it more as helping them get the practise they need to graduate than getting my hearing checked.

    • Any parent who is concerned about their child’s hearing should get them referred to an Audiology clinic ASAP. Sometimes the waiting lists in the hospitals can be long, so it is possible that they may be seen sooner in our clinics. If we pick up hearing issues which may require treatment by the hospital Ear, Nose and Throat Department, (Starship or Manukau Super Clinic) we can refer directly if needed. However, if the GP has referred the child directly to us as part of their case management of the preschooler, we let the GP know our recommendation and leave it to the GP to do the referral if they were planning on referring the child to an ENT Department anyway. Sometimes the GPs get upset if we interfere with their planned case management.

If we find a child who may need ongoing testing by the Audiologists in the DHB clinics, we refer them directly there with a recommendation on how urgent the follow up appointment needs to be.

      • Thanks for the answers that will definitely help any parents considering.
