For all you Single Origin coffee lovers out there. I stumbled upon Coffee-Techs clearance sale which they have going on. Some really interesting varieties going for cheap. I've ordered a couple of bags so will report back once I have them.

The packaging image would suggest they are whole beans.

Will wait for OP to report back but every other store when they have those drop down options it means it's pre ground. For reasonably fresh roasted beans I'd be happy with those prices, for old roasted/pre ground, it's not much of a cheapies deal anymore

Whole beans are what I got in the bag.

awesome, thank you for confirming

I'm sure 2021 was a significant year for them or someone in coffee industry - but for the rest of us, why that number keep showing up at that website? Ethiopia 2021, Panama 2021, Guatemala 2021, etc? Also, i like strong, lightly roasted arabica, which one should i go for?

Roast it yourself!
It's cheap and roasted 24-72 hours ago is unbeatable on flavour.

Where do you get the unroasted beans for a good price?

I have no loyalty to any brand or type, so I tend to sift around looking for the best deals when I run out.
If no good deals you can fallback onto the super cheap stuff, like this:
https://www.greenbeanhouse.co.nz/product/LuckyDipI find no matter what the source, when it's fresh and roasted exactly how I want it, it always tastes good.

Awesome post, Dan! Never thought roasting beans could be so easy, and just with a popcorn maker. This looks really interesting and definitely doable for me. Thanks for sharing!

I also checked out CoffeeworkshopNZ, which you recommended on your site, and it looks like 1kg of green beans now costs over $40. Is this the typical price for green beans everywhere nowadays?

Anywhere between $30-40 is a typical price for a kilo of green beans.

Changes all the time, that was where I bought them in 2021. As above, I sift around whenever I need more looking for the best price.
In a pinch (there's no good deals at the time) you can use this stuff for $17/kg:
https://www.greenbeanhouse.co.nz/product/LuckyDipYou'll also find it on TradeMe, funnily enough.

Intrigued by this! Do you have any knowledge of the Kmart Anko popcorn maker? Looks like the cheapest new machine around at the moment, but unsure if it meets your two main criteria.

I do not, but it looks like Kmart is pretty good with pictures:

https://kmartau.mo.cloudinary.net/a2ccb053-1e33-44a8-82e6-0e…Definitely louvred inside, don't know how tall the chamber is, though, but based on the shape it looks alright.
Here's someone better describing the bad types:

@danvelopment: Checking back in to say that I sourced some beans and grabbed the Anko machine. The first attempt I noted quite a few beans escaping during the roast, so to counter this, fitted a tin can to extend the chamber, and successfully roasted a couple more batches with only a few beans jumping out.
Looking forward to trying the coffee in a few days. Thanks again for the inspiration!

@danvelopment: In terms of economics of roasting own beans, do you find it worthwhile? It seems that the cost of green beans at the moment, using beans that cost say $29 (+ shipping) make it roughly the same as just buying Supreme coffee (roasted 10 days ago) from the supermarket. It doesn't appear to be a cost savings exercise, unless the beans were significantly cheaper.

@NZLSizeNZL: Shruggie, well I mean it is for me. Cost of them at the moment is always a variable, and if green beans are expensive now, then roasted beans will follow suit soon enough.
But yeah, you can always get other breeds [robusta], cheaper options [I linked one earlier] and alternatives, as well as the ability to try out new roasts and things.
I personally prefer a medium roast, I find a medium roast through an espresso machine comes out chocolatey, but prepackaged coffee at the supermarket is all dark roasts.

thanks for your post, your link has motivated me to try it myself.
Question - instead of a wok, would a colander or large kitchen sieve be an improvement?
You're trying to cool down alot of heat as fast as possible, so you want metal and maximum surface area (one layer of coffee) to pull the heat away from the coffee. The bigger the object the better (hence me using a wok) because the untouched metal gets a chance to cool while the coffee is moving off it in order to absorb maximum heat when it comes back.
So I won't say yes or no, as I haven't tried it, but I use the fan to cool the metal, not the coffee.
Big oven tray is also good.

Thanks! I normally go to Dear Deer but can't resist those prices.

From the T&C about delivery "Ownership and risk pass to the Customer upon delivery to the carrier."
Hmm, a bit of misleading nonsense there that's in direct violation of the CGA.

Is it? I don't remember the CGA having provisions around delivery terms, this clause is basically an equivalent to an FCA incoterm. Can you link the clause in the legislation?

No, in the time you typed that you could've looked online yourself. Sheesh

Sounds made up then. I do not believe you.

A lot entered for the 2021 Best of Panama, while it did not receive a top placement, it is an exceptional quality coffee.
So it's 4 years old? - their descriptions are a little odd.

For the Espresso option, are they whole beans?
