  • Thanks. They seem to do the free motor listings every 3 months give or take a few days it seems

They have updated the promo to make Ping compulsory for General Items and removed bank transfer as a payment option - This was added since I posted originally
    Original
    Updated

I've now updated the post to include this.
Note that Ping takes a 2.19% transaction fee.

    • Booo! (but thanks for posting and updating)

So in summary it's a sneaky way of promoting not free selling but a reduced fee (72% off) selling by dropping essentially success fee from 7.9% to 2.19%? Except for those doing pick up transactions in which cash is fee free.

Wonder if they would ping you (lol) if you said in the listing that bank transfer also fine (select cash), and just sent them the details as normal!

    • Love this idea, might give it a try

The buyer doesnr have to use Ping. You just have to offer it.

      • As per post, it says bank transfer not available as an option so was going off that.

      • Last time they removed the option for any other payment type so you had to have ping as the only payment type when creating a new listing (using the standard way of listing).

    • Depending on the price of the item and size/weight, you could also offer free shipping for payments via bank transfer.

    • We sold a couple of furniture items the last time they did this—1 paid by bank deposit and the other by cash—no issues and didn't get "pinged"

Honestly, I don’t mind the forced Ping payment option. I always offer it when selling on TradeMe - so many people rely on credit cards these days. I reckon your items will either sell faster or fetch a better price when you offer credit card as a payment option. It also makes it way easier to track who’s paid if you’re selling multiple items at once.

From a buyer’s perspective, it’s just more convenient, and the consumer protections help reduce the risk of dealing with a dodgy seller.

If you’re trying to avoid TradeMe fees entirely, Facebook Marketplace is an option - just don’t expect to get the same prices as you would on TradeMe haha.

    • I agree. Honestly, I feel like I must be an outlier with how much I see people complain about trademe's fees, but I really don't consider them bad? For the service they provide I think their fees are reasonable, and with their regular free-or-reduced-selling-fee days I find trademe great. The site has it's flaws (it's awfully slow at times, some of the filters are clearly outdated, etc.), but I've never seen a site like it that doesn't have flaws.

Hard agree. As a buyer, I think twice if the seller doesn't offer Ping; it's a dealbreaker if they also have even a slightly spotty reputation.

While TradeMe's UI is a bit all over the place, the mobile app is clunky and prone to breaking down, feature parity between mobile and desktop is lopsided; they do have some neat features that make them hard to displace in NZ, Ping being one of them.

However, they always seem to stuff them up just enough to stop short of being truly killer: Ping should entirely be a buyer charge, not a seller one… and thats if they don't just outright fail to market them to their users properly (Ping again, so much user wariness around it)

I won't sell now without offering Ping, in my mind the account reputation history and Ping make a nice team for safer selling. Here's a tip though; if you don't like the fee, price it in according and offer a 2.19% discount for manual payment options.

      • I used ping to buy upon pickup but Trademe blocked it because it was over an undisclosed limit, and because it was a holiday they didn't respond for help. I had to drive all the way back empty handed even though I had paid.

    Last post https://www.cheapies.nz/node/51947

Couple of things to note if it's the same as last time
    - Relists aren't forced to have ping
    - Might be able to avoid ping if you use myproducts

    • -1

Relists don’t get the free selling though do they (so makes sense the Ping restriction doesn’t apply anymore?)

        Third bullet point in post:

"Discount applies to relists, but only if they are relisted on the day of the promotion. Only applies for the first listing period."

        • Ah sorry misunderstood - thought you were suggesting relists of things listed on Sunday would be fee free!

  • I wonder if Ping is beong forced on everyone this time, or if its targeted again (as it was last time).

And based on the above possible "My Product" exclusion, if Bidbud uses this to bulk list, if not targeted last time), may be why I didnt have to use Ping.

Edit- (Actually it definitely wasn't- cause I didnt offer Ping on a couple.of things that were $400+)

If they force Ping, just increase the listing price.

If buyer promises to do bank transfer, discount 2.2%

If buyer wants buyer protection, pay the extra 2.2%

    Solved…

    • +1

There used to be a rule against something similar. You couldn't say bank deposits add extra $1 or whatever the fee was.
If you got a complaint ya listing gets removed and you got a warning, not worth it for a percent or 2

      • +1

You can always do it the other way around: price it in and offer a 2.19% discount for manual payment options.

As a buyer, I think that's fair, as I will always be happy to pay the 2.19% fee for buyer protection.

If it helps: I can confirm that last time they ran this promotion, I used MyProducts for all my listings and had ping, cash and bank deposit available as options—it didn't take it away from me once listed, and I did sell a couple of things without incurring fees (ping still applied).

    • yes but if your listing has "ping" as default , you cannot "unselect " it

    • Looks like they fixed it this time around, I had bank deposit selected but it's not showing in the listing now for my listings via MyProducts 😞

  • Did anyone get an email from trademe about this free selling day? Usually I'd receive an email the day before and day of but I didn't receive them this time.

  • Does anyone know if this still applies if you edit a listing after posting it yesterday? Before saving changes I get the usual "A success fee may apply if your listing sells"

    • +1

If it's the same as previous, then yes. I've made dummy listings on free selling days in the past as I didn't have time to make the full listing, I've then edited them and paid no success fee when they've sold.

      • Cheers, I asked TM support and they confirmed this is the case
