Anyone using esims within New Zealand to avoid higher data prices?

So I just purchased an esim for $10.20 (from here https://escapesim.com.au/) which is 5gb of data for 30 days. I think I'll drop my $17 skinny prepaid plan which is 1.5 gb and go for the 2degrees $8 plan to handle my calls and texts. Which will end up at $18.10 per month, a 1.10 more than I'm paying, but get 3.5 gb data more, and lose unlimited calling (which i don't do much of anyways).

Is anyone else doing the same, and if so which mix up of providers are you using?

Why not just get the Kogan Large plan? for $198 for 365 days?

It’s the equivalent of 15GB of data and unlimited calls/txt within NZ per month for about $16.50.

  • well, that does seem decent 😅

    • The plan gives you 15GB of data every 31 days. You won’t go over this as once you hit this you simply run out of data. It then resets and the cycle repeats.

      • How often does that two for one deal reoccur? Sheet, that would be nice for both my wife and I.

          Black friday and march

          • @Plusultra556: In 2023 it was August and December for the BOGOF deal.
You never know exactly when they’re going to run it. Outside of those deals they also frequently run other promos. It still ends up one of the cheapest plans in terms of bang for buck.

Kogan bogof the plan of a true cheapie fan

    • Na, someone else should pay for a true cheapie, eg work, I haven't paid for phone usage for at least 10 years, unlimited everything.

Ive got pretty much a similar combination, warehouse mobile sim for calls and texts - top off at $4 a year to keep my number active and $55 a year for 35 GB through 3HK for Esim (i can use this data in UK, USA, Canada, Aus and NZ)..my use case is pretty minimal to spotify/youtube music and google maps with the occassional reddit scrolling though. My last data run lasted me 11 months before i just bought the same plan again. And having to top up just once a year is way less upkeep than doing it monthly.

    • On the three HK plans can you move the esim or do they lock you to the original device as you are off shore? Heading overseas shortly so would like it on my phone but when we get back would want to transfer to my tablet as I have plenty of phone data on my prepaid plan.

its locked to your device per e-sim, i had to purchase a transfer when i upgraded from my s23 ultra to s24 ultra. (under lost device or something for around $5)

        • Yes I paid this recently only about 5 bucks for them to reissue a barcode for esim

    • Sweet - how's the plan overall? Coverage, speed, etc.

Also, do you know whether it could be used as a standalone eSIM for a wearable? :)

i havent had any issues with it, it piggy backs off the 2degrees network so if you're in major xities you should be fine. i would say there could be latency as data routes through HK so no competitive gaming? dont think theres wearable support

    • Is the internet fast enough for 1080p/4k YouTube?

      And can hotspot ?
