  • How’s Starlink comparing with 5G wireless or Fibre?

    • Has been great for my parents who live out of the fibre zone in the countryside. Stream television non-stop and do online video calls most days.

I wouldn't get this over fibre. It replaces spotty internet or no internet locations.
I would choose this over VDSL, ADSL and 4g/5g personally

    • +2

Definitely not a substitute for fibre (comparing my fibre setup to my father's Starlink), but it's an absolute game changer for rural areas with poor ADSL performance.

    • It's an option when there's no other options.

But it shouldn't be considered an option when there is.

      • It is better than a lot of options. If your options are: satellite, rural wireless, ADSL or crappy VDSL (these were my options) then Starlink blows everything else away. And the quality/speed is more than adequate on their "Residential Lite" plan at only $79/mo.

Really the only things that are better than Starlink are fibre and urban/5G wireless. If you can get those then you should, otherwise Starlink is by far the best option.

  • FWIW I have Starlink Mini. Bought for caravan, turn data on and off depending on whats happening. Is awesome when theres no or bad cell reception. Right now their most basic plan ($17 per month for 10GB plus $4 per GB for any additional data) is free through to mid July - you still have to pay any additional data cost, just monthly $17 charge is free. So i just download stuff before I go, can do light browsing and have perfect phone reception via data. If i need a bit if extra data its not going to be too much. Just make sure to set it as a metered network so it doesnt automatically update apps and upload photos etc

    • Could you please post a link to this plan? I can't find anything like it on the Starlink site.

I dont see it on their website, I think maybe they offer it to customers who pause their plan. Maybe ask them direct? The email i got said:

    • Never heard this plan, best I could get is +$59 a month for 50GB and $89 for the dish..as I'd been a Starlink residential member paying $159/mo for over 12 months.

  • A shame you can’t get this on their cheaper plan
