I rolled my ankle and while crawling to the car to go to afterhours, I crushed the housing of my Pixel 7 Pro. 4 attempts at repair cost me a bit, so was hopeful with boxing day sales, however the best deals in Australia were AU$1297 but with shipping/duties was a problem. It was nearly worth flying over and getting the tax back on the way out, until I found this site.

Reviews aren't great if you need to return something as you'd have to mail to Hong Kong, but they've been operating for a while and have posted on cheapies before themselves too.

Maybe a price match somewhere, but they're also low in stock around the world at present, Google's anticipated demand for this phone was exceeded and there have been supply issues too, so glad to have found it somewhere, and for this price.

  • There's a couple more of such sites that I've personally had positive experiences with, then referred to others who've also had nothing but positive experiences with them… however, there are quite some who haven't:

    becextech.co.nz is one
    supero.co.nz is another

I think if you buy something brand-new and it works out without any manufacturing defects types of issues, those are solid unmatched deals. If you have problems, that's when customer service seems to be a letdown.

    • Yeah, in a previous role we needed some phones for testing, and bought from becextech. Phones were refurbished but to my eyes, brand new. Great deal. Didn't know about supero, thankfully they don't have the pixel 9 pro for less or I'd be kicking myself ;)

  • Why is the demand for this phone exceeding? Isn't the tensor cpu just a rebadged Exynos which is worse than the snapdragon equivalent?

All that means nothing to most users since it's just a spec sheet, and to Pixel (previous Nexus) fans, it means something theoretically but not as much practically.

For example, I've got a Pixel 7. Sure, it's got a few little problems (mainly the sometimes annoying fingerprint sensor and a few minor bugs occasionally). And I'd probably much prefer the Samsung Galaxy Ultra hardware, but I can't really give up the stock Android software. It feels light, it's simple, it's clean and free of clutter. It's still fast, perhaps not lightning fast like on paper comparisons… but it doesn't lag or slow down specifically. It is totally fine for regular everyday use, great even.

It definitely lacks the extra bits especially that power users would want, but I don't feel anything missing for my general use, and I'm more tech-y than the average user as well.

This. I love diving into the pure android stuff, always in the betas, and dev debugging stuff too. Every few phones I switch for a Huawei or HTC and then I come running back on the next phone to stock Android.

And the software features from google that come to it first. The pictures my 7 Pro took were/are exceptional, in my view. Even for aurora hunting photos. I've been an SLR purist since 2008 but I find myself getting it out less and less, and even have a phone mount for my telescope now. They take great pics.

Pixels are not stock Android, technically it's just Android loaded with only Google's bloatware.

ASOP Android is pretty much unusable nowadays.

        • +1

Yep but the ecosystem is what catches you now not just the unlockable bootloader, i like samsung hardware but i dont want that bloat as well as googles.

@coffeee: I think Pixel A series is the sweet spot. Really don't see any point paying over 1k for a pixel tbh

    • It's not even on par with the flagship Exynos never mind SD, 1.5k is quite a bit of $$$ considering you can get a flagship S24 for half the price.

And they both have 7 years of promised updates I dont really see any reason to get a Pixel unless if you are really married to the OS (Clean Android)

      • Also $1500 for 128g is mad…

        • +1

Plus 128g is ufs 3 instead of full speed ufs 4

      • +1

You're paying more for worse battery life as well. It doesn't even use the better, newer Exynos modem either.

I've never been a big Samsung phone fan, although I like their tablets - I am curious tho, where do you get an S24 for $750? My wife needs an upgrade to her phone soon…

        • Most recent one was the trade in boost: https://www.cheapies.nz/node/49816

Although the phone was actually $598.75 with a trade in (device value of $0).

          • @kfr23: By "device value of $0" do you mean you sent a broken phone and it was accepted?

            • @Totto: Yep, that's correct

              • @kfr23: That is awesome. That would have been a perfect opportunity. So sad I missed it :'( Hope there is something similar in the near future.

                • @Totto: Might be a deal for the new S25 with trade in

                  • @kfr23: Awesome. I am considering both mid-range and above. The very latest model is not necessary unless there's a really good deal of course. I guess I should have a couple of broken phones ready? Haha

Looking to upgrade 3 phones, where 1 is for an elderly so just basic features and compatibility with latest apps is fine. The other 2 phones would need a relatively good cpu and memory etc.

I'm not really tech-savvy so it's hard to know what I should be looking at etc. I know Snapdragon is better than Exynos for example, but I know it's not one size fits all and it depends. However, my tech-knowledge stops there really haha.

        • You can still get it now for around $750 through the epp website.

I had a go yesterday and it all checks out but I still think 770 is too expensive when others have got it in the past for $400. So I'm holding out for now.

Id personally rather have a pixel than a samsung again. I haven't had a samsung that didn't become really slow over time!

You're right about the OS, samsung oneui is by quiet a distance my least favourite cellphone skin.

        • -3

I personally find OneUI far better than Google's 'stock' UI. I'd go for a Pixel if they chose chips that didn't suck. Even Mediatek would be a better option.

          • @kfr23: I used a pixel 7 for about 2 years and never really found it slow tbh, it’s still much smoother than Samsungs I’ve had.
That said I don’t know really what I could do on a phone that the chip speed would matter nowadays. I’m not playing games on it!!

Can’t say I care too much but oneui is definitely my last pick, I’d rather go iPhone than Samsung tbh. There’s a lot of unnecessary bloat, even in the control settings at the top

            • @Grandma: It's not the performance of the chip (even though they are far behind the newest flagships). It's the efficiency of both the chip and the modem.

              • @kfr23: not a good benchmark, i know, but that pixel seven seemed to get better coverage and battery life than the iphone 15 im running aroudn with now.

            • @Grandma: What Samsung are you comparing ?

              • @quote: Actually a few years ago I won a note 20 ultra, which was a $2300 phone and it was beautiful, but very slow, choppy, hot and poor battery.

I had a z flip 3, it was actually one of my favourite phones! Pretty much because it closed & there's some great psychology behind closing it. Idk how to explain it. I never got to use a sim with that phone (long story, work phone but work never provided a sim, so no experience with performance).

Briefly had an S21 ultra, partner has S23 FE. Both are okay, but (not on one ui 7 yet on anything fwiw) and they weren't as 'nice to use' as my pixel. Idk.

Also over the years I had an S4,S5 and S6.

ohh and had an S8 ultra which i sold on last week!

Also for what it's worth I worked for a retailer around galaxy S10-S22 times and I find dealing with samsung accounts, samsung services frustrating at the best of times

  • You might have to factor in GST of ~$225 to the cost:

    https://buymobile.co.nz/pages/terms-and-conditions

    GST - NEW ZEALAND
All orders under NZD$400 sent to New Zealand are exempt from GST and no further fees or charges will be applied. For all orders over NZD$400 GST is applicable and is collected and processed by the relevant customs authority at the border upon import.

As far as I know, the threshold is 1000. Still applies though.

    • It was around NZ$700 including delivery to NZ during Xmas from Amazon Australia. I bought my Pixel 6A around Xmas two years ago from Amazon for about $560 including delivery. They always have good deal for Xmas.

      • Oh wow that was a good deal!

Mighty ape price is same as JB HiFi in Australia, I use JB to determine if price is good here haha

        • I am a big fan of Google phones. I think Amazon's price is better than JB HiFi. I saw PB Tech used to sell the Google phones last year but sold out in a few months and never got them back in stock.

    • If it was for the Pro, yeah, but not an A

      • Never seen a Pro that low?

        • I'm saying that price is quite normal for the A

I still use lg v20 which was back in 2015, just unfortunately a lot of the apps requires more recent android version. There are androind 13 custom rom available, however it doesn't support volte as LG locks something, and later this year all 2/3g network will be shut down. I don't understand, my phone still runs fast and smooth, and it can change its battery just like that, but I have to change to one that most likely won't be able to last this long. Most customers are too kind towards those phone manufactures, and both of them don't care about how much uneccesary electronic waste is dumped and how bad these are going to pollute the enviroment.

  • There is a Amazon promotion but they might be locked, faulty units, not worth the risk.

  • This is a good phone. I buy my pixels from either mighty ape or einfotech.
