Not a lot of good deals lately

First off - thank you generous people for the deals posted on cheapies! It really saved my wallet during some tough times!😭

However I've noticed this year that there's not a lot of good deals lately - I can estimate 1 or 2 good ones every 3 months. I'm not sure if it's because my shopping therapy is slowly dying down (yey!) or our economy is in deep shambles that stores are not running good deals.

I've also noticed the increase of the stores that puts 10% off just to promote their stores (which are actually just Temu quality products). I'm not sure how to deal with them but the mods are doing a great job of asking them stuff. Thank you so much for your service! 😊

Anyway I'm not sure where to go from here but probably just doing a "Cheapies wrapped" like the Spotify one. For this year - my top 2 would definitely be the october Samsung deal and the BOGOF Kogan.

What's your top deals fellow cheapies?

Haven't really been purchasing much stuff this year.

Got a good discount on a tern gsd bike for $7250 for black Friday via evo cycles, after adding on extras eg. Locks racks clubhouse frame kid seats etc it came to $8950 all up.

Otherwise no black Friday / boxing day purchases this year.

I've noticed there are a lot more cash back deals this year.

For the October Samsung deal i already had a s24ultra so unfortunately couldn't take advantage of that.

The samsung deals were nice especially if you traded form the same tier of s23 or s22, it was a very cheap upgrade and we werent even considering upgrading until we saw how cheap it would be to stay up to date.

It doesn't always feel like this sites that busy anymore and theres more and more associated posts that are more advertising than great deals. Members like beatthatflight definitely earn their buys with their posts but some of the others are almost just spam content.

The Doc Martens for $108 delivered deal is one of my recent favourites, I use them a lot. I think next year we may see better/more deals, and hopefully more general optimism in the air.

Haven't been many implausibly good deals this year. I memory of some of my all time greats:
    - Mechpro polisher for $5.75 + $8.50 shipping (Usually $127.5)
    - Samsung deals where educational pricing & $30 off welcome deal could be stacked with their normal free shipping giving $4 - $5 SmartTags, power banks etc.
    - Waitomo Spin and win where you had unlimited spins to get a big prize.

    Old all time great thread:

But beyond the implausible luck kind of deals this year has been fairly solid for deals:
    - I picked up ex demo 65" OLED major brand TV for ~$1k from costco
    - EV's: New ford mach-e RWD's for $45k was amazing. That's a 198kW RWD medium SUV for less than the price of a high trim corolla. Also: New leaf for $30k, New 500e for $35k, New Ora for $31k etc.
    - Deals are back to aviation (after the crazy expansive post pandemic period). Manila for $911 return, Jetstar / Air NZ domestic flights deals from $35 etc. Shanghai $408 return.
    - Introduction of visa free travel to China to avail the latter above
    - Intel Core ultra 200 series laptop for under $ 2k: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=164&topicid=31…
    - Current Mighty mobile unlimited data (max 50mbps), calls and text's for $25pm
    - Various Kogan mobile deals (sadly no boxing day one for them)
    - Chemist warehouse $5.99 for a 52 pack of dishwasher tablets.
    - Samsung deals on S24 series phones, trade in boost etc.
    - Half price Weber Q classic
    - $5 power banks at K mart
    - UE boom 3 clearance pricing
    - Netflix overseas pricing (Have to jump through more hoops now).
    - Various Mevo account credit (Got to the airport for peanuts)
    - Deep discounts on MAC cosmetics at Manawa bay opening (MAC is rarely discounted)
    - Minimum spend removal at Temu
    - 50% off most beville appliances
    - Free QV proprety report
    - Various Domino's deals
    - Free Zambrero meals
    - $5 Samsung smart keyboard
    - 1c dewalt battery and charger with Select skin purchase.
    - Various Bike deals.

As a whole the general retail market has shifted. Peak number of Christmas eve transactions lowest in 6 years (a big deal given our population is growing).

In general, retailers seem to be a bit more careful with pricing. Running massive losses to gain market share (Temu, themarket etc) seems to be less of a thing these days. Price error type deals seem less common.

While on the other hand, retailer's that scaled up too rapidly in the pandemic boom, are willing to meet the market to clear excess stock/ fill capacity under current market conditions. (EV's, bikes, flights, S24 smartphones etc.)

Going to be an interesting couple of years. Will see some major brands go bankrupt. Meanwhile for others, the pandemic price hikes have taught them that a worthwhile amount of the market will pay crazy high prices for the best gear. I'm thinking PS5 Pro, Nvidia x090 series graphics cards etc.

On that note. Cheapies year in review stats are available: https://www.cheapies.nz/recap

    • Thanks.
      Always interesting reading.

  • Samsung phone deals were pretty good. I hope they keep doing that next year for s25 ultra with snapdragon elites so I can finally upgrade

  • I took one of those cheap Chinese flights and got a week's holiday for under $1000 all told.

    • what was your experience like from booking to return trip?

      • Good, my only regret is that I booked via Vayama (which is well-known for having terrible customer service) and when one of my flights was changed it appeared as though it was cancelled rather than rescheduled. I eventually talked face-to-face with airline staff who confirmed the truth for me, but I had a stressful day trying to figure it out.
So yeah, in the future I'd pay a few dollars more to book via a reseller like Trip.com that has full support - if I'd done that then it would have been resolved in about five minutes, over the phone, in English.

  • Its my first year in NZ so ain't sure regarding the quality of deals in previous years. I was able to grab some good deals though. Got Galslaxy S24 FE with google pixel 7 trade in for $170. Got a mobile plan from kogan. And couple of other small items. So not that bad.

  • My top deal is any time Persil Ultimate comes up cheap! We never have decent local specials on it so I'm always grateful for The Warehouse price match to stock right up

  • +2

It’s certainly a lot quieter since Warehouse Group pulled the plug on price beats, and closed the often-exploited 1-Day.

The best deals tend to be pricing errors, or the last items in stock these days. Sales in NZ are often just price rotations, so you usually wait until they have their sale before buying. Some of Samsungs deals have been pretty good, but not sure if they are errors sometimes.

  • Agree with you, really good deals seem to be slower to come round, not as many about as previous years. For me, the Kogan one was great, but also the 3 pairs of Skechers shoes for $115 was a great deal, decent quality shoes at just under $40 a pair.

  • If you shop online at Amazon, aliexpress or temu then you're getting a good deal already.
