With the recent increase of visa-free entry to 30 days, prices have dropped further on China Eastern Airlines flights to several Chinese destinations in Q1 next year.

  • One thing that has always puzzled me is that their direct flight (i.e. China Eastern Auckland to Shanghai $1100 return) is much more expensive than transfer via Shanghai (e.g. China Eastern Auckland - Shanghai - Shenzhen $500 return). It does not make sense from a cost perspective as I travel for longer for less. Same with Hainan Airline: Auckland -Shenzhen return is more expensive than Auckland - another city return via Shenzhen. It's like Sydney - Wellington (via Auckland) is cheaper than Sydney - Auckland —- It will never happen for AirNZ.

      It's often to fill a plane, and happens a lot with hub-spoke models, which NZ doesn't really have much of. See the US where airlines might hub out of Atlanta, for example.

      Some passengers use this 'hidden city ticketing' to get cheaper tickets, if it works out in their favour.

      I was in Bolivia years back where a travel companion found a return ticket to Auckland was cheaper than a one way, so he bought a return and discarded the rest!

    • Yeah I'm confused as well. Another example is direct flights to Guangzhou via China Southern is more expensive than transfer via Guangzhou to Shanghai via the same airline.

        You shouldn't think about it as paying for two seperate flights Auckland to Guangzhou, and Guangzhou to Shanghai, the airline isn't selling you those two flights, they're selling you a ticket from Auckland to Shanghai. They need to be priced lower than China Eastern's direct service from Auckland to Shanghai or else no one would choose China Southern on that route. If you book that China Southern ticket, you can't take only the Auckland to Guangzhou segment and not take board the following segments, the remaining segments on the ticket will be voided if you try to do this and you might be banned from the airline.

      Airlines price tickets by demand, not by their operating cost. Direct flights between two cities are in more demand than connecting flights, so they're priced higher. It's also due to competition, e.g. China Eastern doesn't offer direct flights between Auckland / Shenzhen, so to compete with Hainan (who do fly direct between those two cities) they need to have a price advantage to stay competitive on that route.

    Crazy that flying all the time way to China and back costs less than flying return Auckland <-> Christchurch.

    • heavy subsidy (tax payer money - good that it is not ours! :-D) + cheaper labour + a highly competive market V.S. virtual monopoly + high labour/compliance costs
