Samsung trade-in experience

Has anybody had experience with same sung trade-ins? Ie.:

Do they actually collect the old items?

Do they apply the trade-in discount/boost at time of purchase or time after assessing the item?

I'm looking to trade in a vacuum cleaner, but wondering what will happen if it doesn't meet the description…

Thanks!

Same thing happened to me. They also reduced the value of my device because of their dysfunctional system and basically told me there is nothing I can do about it.

I traded in an iphone 11 and got $54 with a trade in boost of $400. After using the iphone for about a month of uber new user promos i sent it back. The external trade in company came back and said that they will give me $215 for the phone instead of $54. I emailed them and they confirmed that i will get a $161 credit back, meaning the total value i got from the phone was $615. Very happy with the trade in since the phone wasnt the best condition lol

Traded in my S23 U for a S24 U as part of the whole UPGRADES deal. I got a reminder email saying to send my phone even though I had sent it. Emailed them challenging this and they confirmed phone had been received. 6 weeks later I get charged $1150 which was the trade in credit amount! Any idea who to chase for my money back?!

Jumping in this thread to confirm that Assurant is an absolute prick to deal with. I sent in a very busted Pink 256gb S22 and they claimed I sent them a 128gb cream S22. The trade-in difference is between $41 and $46 so I won't bother fighting it, but I can imagine if you sent in a pristine phone, this would be a total balls ache. I recorded everything just incase they tried to claim they never received it.

    • Similar thing happened to me. There is not much you can do about it apparently. But since there is so many cases, maybe it would be worth it to report it somewhere?

      • Commerce Commission - see this post https://www.cheapies.nz/comment/248705/redir

It'll take a number of complaints to do anything but the more who do the more likely it is they'll have to change/get rapped over the knuckles.

  • People who have been waiting on refunds from Samsung/assurant, did you manage to get it?

    • I sent in my device on 5/11, they received it 6/11. I got an email on 15/11 saying they've received it and my trade-in was complete. There was no update on the trade in status page in between.

I know of another one they received on 1/11 and got the trade in complete email on 12/11.

  • I had a seamless trade in experience.

Sent my phone is on the 2nd of November, got an email on the 12th of November saying trade in approved.

There status link did not update till the 12th, emailed Assurant that there was no update once I knew the phone was delivered with the tracking number and they said something about maintenance issues with the system or something

  • Experience for the bespoke vacuum.

Traded in a non-working vacuum (Stated on the trade it was not working)

Didnt hear single thing in any of the comms around the trade.. how it worked.. etc etc etc.

Fliway were useless. Just turned up the house with no notice delivering the vacuum and asking for the old one, despite no warning so had to do a big mission to get that from another house. Also the delivery dude seemed to not know anything re how trades work etc.

    • Which be spoke vacuum did you get and what are your thoughts?

Seems like a pretty good deal atm trading in my shitty old vaccum, $200 towards a bespoke jet elite plus 210w which comes down to $609 with trade in.

      • Is there an extra discount code for the vacuums?

        • Not a code, pre applied discount only on EPP

      • It was this one.

        https://www.samsung.com/nz/vacuum-cleaners/stick/bespoke-jet…

Seems alright aye, the auto clean station is so bloody handy.

        • Yea looks handy as. Have a look on aliexpress for replacement bags for those. Way cheaper.

Did you just hand the driver your trade in vaccum or box it up?

          • @Lieutenantdave: Yeah, I got a bunch of bags from AliExpress :D

I was going to clean it up and box it up, but since he just came up randomly I didnt have time.

I just handed it him when I found it in the garage covered in about 10 years of dust/bugs/crap .. and he just threw it in the back of his van heh.

        • Now I need to research to see if this a worthwhile upgrade from our Wertheim handstick…
Pretty good discount can be achieved eh. Although the trade-up list where i select my vacuum brand doesn't include Wertheim, or my older Philips regular vacuum. Do they even care?

          • @Surreal: Earlier this year traded in a Broken canister hoover for a $277.93 1 X Jet95 Stick VC 210W HexaJet Motor - Woody Green

The Hoover had a cracked pipe and the canister clip snapped off so would roll off the vacuum base sometimes,
I just took photos put everything in the box with just a main head ( Kept the accessories ) and had it ready for the delivery person.
            They took it.

But I can't seem to find any email from Assurant or anyone about trading it in the vacuum like the mobile phone ones, so maybe they didn't care lol 🤷‍♂️

            • @Huntakillaz: Did they provide any tracking or email/text notification the day before/hour before, or did they literally just rock up?

              • @spren: You get emails from Fliway couriers and a text with a approx time frame iirc

            • @Huntakillaz: That is a great price. What kind of discounts did you get? When I looked at it last week the price price was $390 for it and a Galaxy Fit3 (trading in an old vac of course), so I got a Bespoke Jet Plus Pet for $382 (trading in).

@sunshinenz: This was when you could stack 3 coupons on ECC, now you can't :(

  • letting you know, flash sale is back on for another 24hours: https://www.cheapies.nz/node/49109

  • Must say, reading this thread had me a bit nervous, but overnight received an email saying trade-in is complete.

I sent in a completely broken s10, base trade-in value initially $0 before bonuses but I was honest on the form that nothing worked. Got an email last week saying the trade in value was wrong and they were giving me $14 for it. Wasn't gonna say no to that…

  • I would like to purchase the watch ultra
I have an old Iphone 6s for trade in
The Samsung website tradein does not show Iphone 6s for selection but it accepts the IMEI no when I select Iphone 7 and enter the IMEI no on their webite.
Is this Ok or should I just leave it as I don't want trade in hassles later on.

    • +2

The IMEI just checks that it’s a valid IMEI, doesn’t mean they will accept it. I wouldn’t take that risk tbh as they will revoke your trade in bonus if they do check the phone.

  • I just traded in a Iphone XR that was completely stuffed. Answered the yes/no questions truthfully. They gave me $20 but I got $150 trade up credit, so $170 total. Will update if they deny the trade-up. If you hear nothing it went fine.

    • Did you tick that the condition was stuffed though? If you did then I can't see there being an issue.

      • Yeah answered honestly, I think that's why they only gave me $20. The Trade-Up credit is what made me follow through. The same damaged Iphone sells for the same price on Trademe.

      • Update: they changed the price UP to $45. So a nice lil bonus. So $195 total now

  • Anyone know if you need to provide the charger for the watch if you are trading it in ? My old watch 4 has a usb type A charger that I would like to keep for my new watch. You reckon they would revoke the trade if I ticked Yes for everything and not provide the charging cable ?

    • Last time I traded in my phone they did not care for the charger nor the cables, the main thing is the phone itself.

IMO I would record your watch condition etc and make sure it is well packaged for shipping.

  • +1

I traded in a near perfect condition S21+ (had a case and screen protector on the whole time I owned it). Dropped it off at the post office on 27th Nov and got the notification yesterday (5th Dec) that they inspected my phone and the trade-in has been completed. Was fairly seamless to me. The only thing that I could think could be improved is Assurant/Samsung's tracking system, which is terrible and only updated once everything was completed.

When I checked NZ post's tracking system on 2nd Dec, the courier had just delivered it to Assurant. But when I checked each of the following days, Samsung's system still showed as awaiting shipment. Nothing changed until they completed my trade-in.

Overall, I would definitely trade-in again.

Anddddd here we go… updated my phone from s23 to s24, sent it (which they have recieved it) then they tried charging my card $915..

  • I traded in my galaxy flip 5, collected 27th Nov, delivered 3rd Dec, received an email in 10th We’ve received your device and inspected it. Your trade-in is complete at full value. No issue.

  • Anyone experience an issue with an email saying "Trade-in discount reclaimed" and $300 charged to their card (reversal of the $300 trade in bonus)?

    • I just posted mine a few das ago, so Ill be sure to keep an eye out for any sneaky business like this!

    • Just happened to me too. Have emailed as per @mpc below.

      • Sending you a DM…I haven’t had much luck so far, but I also didn’t follow @mpc’s steps, I tried another contact I had at Samsung that seemed helpful

For anyone struggling to get a response from Samsung regarding incorrectly charged back trade ins try emailing Lakish Narayan (l.narayan@samsung.com), Pankaj Sokhal (p.sokhal@partner.samsung.com - apparently in a 'Customer Experience' role) and most importantly Cc the Commerce Comission contact@comcom.govt.nz. I got a phone call within 2hrs once I did that. Their customer service is atrocious when their systems/processes don't work correctly. They always say someone will ring you in 24hrs and it never happens - at least that's my experience after trying multiple options to get a response.

  • I just received an email saying "trade-in discount reclaimed $150". No receipt, no explanation of why it was reclaimed etc.

The previous email I received said they had received my trade-in phone, and the value was assessed at $0 (which is what I had expected).

I have emailed as per MPC's advice but have not yet heard back. If anybody else has any suggestions or advice on how to get this reversed Id love to hear!

    • How long after the trade-in was accepted did you receive the other email about the reclaim?

  • Does anyone else have (or had) their trade in details say that the condition is good even though they selected 'No' for all the questions for the condition of the device? My shipping label/receipt from the assurant email says that the condition is good even though my answers didn't say that. My trade-in value is also $0 for the actual phone.

    Trade-In Details : (Make & Model) - Apple iPhone XR 64GB
CONDITION : Good ⬅️ I think this part is probably wrong.

Will I get penalized for this? The trade-in value is already $0 to start with.

    • +1

Yes, both of my orders even though I answered no to all questions. Trade in value $0 for both.

Still waiting for the devices to be dropped off to them.

    • Why bother, if its in working order donate.
Judging by their lackluster online and phone support when trying to purchase online, how the hell do they have time for all this

  • +1

Just an update, on my experience… my trade in value was $0, but I got an email invoice with no itemisation saying that $150 was charged (my account confirmed this).

Support have been helpless to deal with, so I'm pretty close to going through the small claims court on principle.

    • I've had a similar experience with my trade-in discount being reclaimed. I've sent numerous emails to support, but they have yet to provide any assistance.
Since I made the purchase with a credit card, I may just dispute the charge.

    • How long after the trade-in was accepted did you receive the other email about the reclaim? Both of you.

      • It was in the same email in my case. The subject line was 'Trade-in Chargeback Order Completed,' and in the body of the email, they mentioned 'Trade-in Discount Reclaimed' with no explanation.

        • And did you get a trade-in complete/assessment complete email prior to that?

I received the assessment complete email, just wondering how long after this the reclaim email may take to come or can I breathe knowing its all done.

          • @vorman: The email I received prior to this stated, "Your trade-in is being processed." However, this was due to accepting a trade-in adjustment for an IMEI/Serial mismatch, which I don't agree with but chose to let slide.
I assume you should be in the clear now.

            • @Bargain-Hunter: I had the exact same emails as Bargain-Hunter by the sound of it. There were a day apart for me.

That is a good idea to dispute the charge. Ive threatened to go through the small claims tribunal, which I absolutely will do if needed, but the credit card dispute might be easier…

What a deceitful business model they are operating here, invoicing people via a pre-authorisation without explanation in breach of their terms when people dont expect it…

          • @vorman: Hi, they received my trade-in a week ago, but the status has not changed so far. How long did it take for you to get updates on the status/ complete email after delivered?

            • @Lipesousa: for me, my tracking details says they received it on 31st dec. Then I got the trade-in complete email on 7th Jan.
The status hasn't changed until they completed the assessment.

            • @Lipesousa: I dropped it at post office on 20 December.
Only delivered on 30 December - it failed the first time - I assume they were closed for a few days over that period.

Received email on 10 January saying its complete. No other emails in between and the status did not change on their system during the postage.

    • When I read this post I was worried that I’d get the same thing… and I did. I received an email saying trade in value has been reclaimed on Friday. I’ve enquired assurant but if it doesn’t get resolved, would it be okay if I reach out to you for some advice?

  • Did anyone who was having issues with Assurant manage to get their issue resolved?

    • I did, it was a painful process that I put a fair bit of time into. I asked them to confirm that they would have a resolution within 5 business days, and said I was lodging a case with the small claims tribunal. I actually would have done that, but all of a sudden the refund came through.

  • Do you have to send in the S Pen if you trading in the S24 or older? Coz might be worth keeping that if you dont have to.

    • I expect they would ping you for that since it'll be a gaping hole on the phone with missing S pen.

Perhaps swap it with the S25 S Pen? not sure if it fits though.

  • +1

Ordered S25 Ultra by trading in S23 Ultra. Never got any details how to ship the old phone back to them and just now they reclaimed the trade-in discount.

    • All the Assurant emails went to spam - I get like ~15 spam emails a day so it's pretty hard to notice legit ones.
I was expecting an email from Samsung not a third party.

  • Just completed the trade in S24 for S25+ seamless process for me.
