You know trademe is struggling when free selling appears

    • +2

They have certainly ramped up these promos.
It used to alternate between free selling, 50% off and free selling $1 reserves but this is the first time I recall seeing two consectitive months of free selling.

IMO they did a lot of damage by getting rid of their online forums and message boards. Guessing most of those people went onto other communities including Facebook. Personally I still use TM to sell things. But not much selling at the moment although did sell my car with a free ad, and I was willing to pay $100 to list it, it just so happens they had free selling that weekend. .

      • +1

yes, I was on there all the time. Now I hardly remember they are there.

        • The MBs were pretty useful for many. It is a bit sad to see TM in this state IMO. But a sign of the times.

  • Do they have to sell at auction first time, or is a fixed price offer sale included in the no fees too?

    • +1

It doesnt matter what method the item sells via (auction or buy now or fixed price offer afterwards) - as long as it is listed on the 7th :).

    • +3

The way I understand it is that fixed price offer sale is also free, as long as it's on the original auction listed on Saturday 7 Oct.

Nobody is buying rn. People are struggling out there.

    • +2

Your right! Some things i have for sale im selling 50% cheaper than other ones for sale and still no luck.

      • +1

Or no one is looking on TM anymore.

        • +2

Personally I'm annoyed by the endless listings of stores/commercial sellers. If there was an option to filter them out and leave private sellers only I'd visit it more often

          • +1

@blam: Filter by "Used". Still get a few Cash Converter type listings though.

        • Same on FB Marketplace. Can't give stuff away for peanuts.

  • +1

Be interesting to know the stats on how much FB Marketplace are cutting TM's lunch. It's taken a while but they have the competition that was needed finally.

    • +2

      Definitely

It’s a nightmare of constant lowballing and a scammer paradise, but the price is right for most with no success fees.

Someone mentioned a while back that trademe verification has been removed now. That was probably my biggest attraction to screen out the dodgy buyers.

      • they don't do address verified anymore but they do authenticate people via bank deposit/credit card use etc iirc

  • +1

Yes the Trade Me response to lower engagement and sales has been to increase the fees for business sellers and increase promos for private. All Business sellers took a hit on Monday, and Real Estate fees for agents and property managers have gone off the chart. A lot of grumbling and threats to move away from Trade Me in that sector.

Overall I suspect Trade Me is trying to make itself look as profitable as possible for a sale. The current private equity owner has already passed the time limit they normally hold companies before flicking them off.

    • Maybe if they had a single dev on the payroll they could improve the product instead of just resting on their market share.

Yep, half the site is still the old layout. It's an absolute mess.

        • Yup and huge differences in functionality between mobile app and desktop too.

          • @Jexla: yeah its pretty wild that make an offer does not exist on the desktop site lol

            • @Dunno: It's so you have to use their app, which has more telemetry built in.

              • @kfr23: The app doesn't allow you to relist multiple items at a time. The desktop site is a mess of old and new, but has more functionality for sellers.

how have they allowed it to go on for so long is what blows my mind, it just goes to show how bad its become.
you cant change your payment instructions on the new ui either, you have to delete "a" after https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/ to get to the old ui.

    • What happened on Monday? OOTL here

  • +1

i needed this, many items i sold the last time are still here, many buyers have "unexpected" bills so im stuck.

    • That would be fellow Cheapies members with unexpected deals that popped up after bidding on your items 😁

    • +1

Yeah, sorry about that. I should really give them a call before I pop over.

  • +8

Not related to the post but don't click on any links sent by the buyer. One of my items got sold over night and i got an email from the buyer asking to click the link in the email to "get" my money. It was strange because that's not how trademe operates.

I didn't click on the link and was going to report the buyer but I got two emails from trademe telling me that the buyer was a scammer and not to click on any links in the email sent by them. So yeah, beware of such fake buyers too.

    • +4

The other annoying thing about that is if you have listed an item during a no success fee promotion, and someone purchases it with no intent on paying. Wastes your time, and you also lose the no success fees discount. Trade Me don't care.

      • you can tick authenticated bidders only?

        but yeah that's it

        trademe is not ebay

        • You can, but to become authenticated someone just has to top up their account $1.

          • @kfr23: One thing you could do is set the listing to auction only, so you can check who bids. If a particular bidder has a lot of negative feedback you can remove their bid etc.

      • +1

Ive had a credit for relisting by contacting them after non payment they offer to cover the next time you relist before…ymmv

      • Yep had this happen on the last one… time wasters….

  • Is it worth turning on authenticated bidders only to avoid timewasters or will you get way less bidders for the items? Looking to sell stuff at low/$1 reserve just to clear it out.

Authenticated means they must have deposited $10 or used pay now etc on the platform.

    • Probably not - it will exclude buyers

I understand many sellers won't use Ping (not saying you should if it's low reserve and/or pick up items) I don't have heaps of sales but I know it'd be far less if I didn't offer Ping payment. I don't like the fee but majority of my items are average $20-30 so it's not huge, just have to suck it up to get the sales these days.
